Hard economic times have caught up with the oldest gay bookstore in the United States. Itay Hod visits the Oscar Wilde Bookshop in New York before the books close for good.
A historical marker to commemorate it will be sufficient. I frequented this store in the 1970s. This area has changed so much that the area the store is located in is not really that gay any more period. I went in for a last good-bye and the owner practically yelled at me, saying if people like me had shopped there they’d still be open, and told me she did not want to continue the conversation. If she treats people this way, we don’t need that representation of what the bookstore was all about.
