365Gay Agenda Blog

Welcome to the new 365gay!

By 365gay Newscenter Staff 07.21.2008 6:22pm EDT

Update: RSS FEED

The RSS feed should be working – but the URL is constructed differently than the old feed. Please reset your URL to:

365gay.com/rss

Still not working? **Please** give us specifics about how it’s broken and what browser you’re using. Many thanks. (Usually when it breaks now it’s due to an editorial error – we need to find the “escaped” ampersand and fix it).

**************************

We hope you like the redesign of 365gay. We’ll continue to bring you daily breaking LGBT news, interesting features, and political analysis and opinion.

It’s a new site, so there are some bugs we’re aware of, and we’re working to fix them. In the meantime, PLEASE respond in the comments below as you find bugs, so that we can get to them quickly.

Update 2:

Issues we think are resolved:

  • RSS feed
    Tiny text
Not enough content in breaking news box

Issues you’ve brought up that we are working on:

  • Printing a full page
  • International access to video
  • News broken out by day of the week
  • Improved navigation
  • Opinion section

Update 3

OK, we thought we fixed RSS but clearly not. So we’re still trying.

And continuing to update all the above. First, though, we’re trying to ensure the underlying code is stable – that’s really the priority. So bear with us, OK? We’re a tiny, tiny staff.

We appreciate very much – and read – all your comments, on this page and all the others.

Update 4

  • By the end of next week, you’ll have a single page with the week’s headlines
  • Also in next week’s publish, the ability to print a story cleanly.

We hear you on readability (a slightly different problem than the tiny text) and front page navigation. Working on both.

Update 5

  • We’re working on a WAP site, which will make things easy for our mobile users, similar to Logo mobile sites at AfterElton and AfterEllen.

Please also comment on stories – a new feature we’re particularly happy about – and feel free to send us news tips at editor@365gay.com.

Finally, our gay political blog VisibleVote08 is now the 365gay Blog - if you haven’t read it before, we hope you’ll check it out.

Warmly,

365gay editorial staff

    • It looks sharp! I hope you’ll consider a printer-friendly option at some point.

    • I’m using FireFox and the fonts on your new site are difficult to read. The formatting on the daily update e-mail was also messy, but you’re probably working on that.

    • I like the look, but two suggestions: it would be very helpful to have an ‘easy-print’ option on articles, and the old site had much shorter URLs for articles, which made it very easy to pass on references to friends by email. The new ones are much longer and cause problems when they ‘wrap’ in email. Sure, I can and probably will use TinyURL to get around that problem, but it complicates my use of YOUR site, and when forwarding references to others, it obscrues the fact that you are the source.

    • Breaking news is good. However, if one reads the full article, the font size is too small. I read several papers daily and this new format for the full article is not easy reading. Please allow more space for the news articles in the middle and LESS space for the right hand column.

    • I too find the email updates very poor in comparison to the previous ones. Also, you may be unaware that clicking on “reply” in any of the previous comments does NOT bring up a reply option, but only goes back to the ‘Welcome’ page.

    • Looks very professional and I like the cleaner, sleeker you. However, I was disappointed that a feature article that was in my email update (that I *just* received a couple of hours ago) was nowhere to be found when I clicked on the link. And here I was all ready to read about Gillian Anderson’s problems playing Scully again :-) . The email itself was a bit of a mess, but I assume that you’ve got that on the ToDo list.

I use Firefox and I don’t have any problem with the site itself. I use Ctrl+ to increase fonts where I need to. I agree that a Print version of all stories would be good, and some way to control the URL lengths of stories. I, too, send links to friends, and I believe that a credit to the source is imperative these days, so I want my sent link to say “365gay.com.”

Overall — good job! Now I need to relearn my way around….

    • The home page seems too “busy” in comparison to the previos format. Also, it would be nice if the the “More 365 GAY News Stories” was closer to the top of the page so you wouldn’t need to scroll down to find it.

    • Hate it. Distracting to read. Hard to find anything. Go back to the way it was.

  • Jon Griffith Said: July 21st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
    • The new layout has potential.. as long as the site still has Wayne Besen’s column and I can stikll get my “troy” fix, I’ll be happy

  • Richard Said: July 21st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
    • What a great improvement. Hope you sort the bugs out, without too much heartache!

  • Rick Said: July 21st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
    • While the site looks sharp, and it’s clear a lot of work has gone into the visual format, I find the new site communicates less. There seems to be less actual news content or fragments of articles to grab my interest.

  • Ron Said: July 21st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
    • Sorry. Too busy for me. Yeah, I know, other websites have a similar layout. I liked the simple and to the point news design in the old site. I don’t come to see pictures – so the large picture for the first item is a waste of space. The 12 word (or less) preview of the article is too little to get an idea what it is about, so it is a pure waste of space too. I liked the longer first sentence, as it really saved time as a way to scan through the news that interested me. Basically, the part that really interested me – the breaking news is now half the width and less than half the content. I do not want rss (though, I respect those who do) – I want to access the site when I want to, not to get a “push” of information. I hope that some additional changes are on the way. I am definitely not excited to visit the site again. Sorry. Your hard work did not do much for me. Wishing the site the best.

    • Sorry guys… IF IT WASNT BROKE… dont fix it…THIS ISNT user-friendly at all… There was nothing wrong with how it was… Now, this is too distracting….. dont follow others. JUST BE HOW you were!

  • CR Said: July 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
    • KEEP IT SIMPLE! There was NO need to do this…. what a shame…..

  • Jerry Keyack Said: July 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
    • WOW! Just when I thought you couldn’t “tweak” a great source of information, you came up with a real winner! It just proves the “gay gene” is alive and well. Face it, only WE know how to design a real website because the straight community is too busy messing up marriage. This may not seem like a very positive response, but as a gay person (age 53), I am tired of reading about some bigots who always pick on gays and I’m tired of getting a watered down version of the news. Thank you for a great website!
