Vanasco: Obama’s Sec’y of Army pick against Don’t Ask?

, editor in chief, 365gay.com

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said today that Obama’s Secretary of the Army nominee Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) agrees with the President that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell should be ended.

I sure hope Gibbs is right – though too often, Press Secretaries don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. They’re simply kept in the dark about evolving policy until the President is ready to take action.

Also? Neither Obama nor McHugh mentioned DADT during the announcement of the nomination today.

Hmmm. Doesn’t quite sound like committment to me.

It would be great if McHugh now supported the end of DADT. But he hasn’t in the past – for example, ThinkProgress.org points out that he’s not one of the co-sponsors of the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would actually END the ban in Congress.

Says LawDork:

“In fact, McHugh only received an unimpressive 15% on the Human Rights Campaign’s Congressional Scorecard for the 110th.  He was, however, one of 35 Republicans to vote “yes” on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

He did worse, receiving a 0%, on the HRC Scorecard from the two previous congresses.  He had received a 17% in the HRC Congressional Scorecard for the 107th Congress, receiving credit for having an office policy of not discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation.”

    • America is the most hypocrite country I have ever known. Human right….human right my Axx. Treat its citizen unequal, abandon them, kick them even they put their life in line of duty. What’s got into your head people? Do not talk about human right and compasiion if you can not get it together.

    • I suppose some people feel the need to attack others for their opinions, but I stand by my words …Obama will do good things for the gay community and Steve’s throwing 500 bucks towards a cause that had no back bone or presenceis of no merit. Apathy killed prop 8!

I wouldn’t read too much into a Google Image search.

The fact that the search term was “kool-aid” and his picture pops up was comical but not a surprise

    • Wow John, that site you linked to is pretty nutty. BRUCE may be drinking the Kool-Aid, but I think your drug of choice is much harder.

    • I just wrote to my senators and rep as well as Pres. Obama on reversing DADT. Obama does have a LGBT representative on staff as I recall. This person can certainly go to the hill and talk it up. I don’t know if there is a buzz going on behind the door or not, but there are many on staff who can do the footwork on this.

    • Wrong, BRUCE. Obama has somehow managed to start working on the issues important to plenty of other groups, including pro-choicers and advocates of stem-cell research. The “he’s too busy” excuse is just that–an excuse.

      And as a non-California who contributed $500 to No on 8, I resent your blame-gays-first self-hatred.

    • Give Obama two terms! If you do he will do great things.
Incase any of you didn’t know there is a huge economic crisis happening globally.
Obama has other things on his agenda and over time I believe he will right many of the wrongs that6 are upon you Americans

Remember Gay Californians are responsible for the Prop 8 vote

Apathy in the Gay community let Prop 8 fly

    • Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said today that Obama’s Secretary of the Army nominee Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) agrees with the President that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell should be ended — in the year 2109.

But, perhaps in hundred years, that may be still too optimistic a goal. Cyborgs and Robots will be serving openly on the battlefields before the tens of thousands of patriotic Gays and Lesbians in the military are allowed to be who they are.
