The President of the United States on the Stonewall Riots
Change we can believe in may never come fast enough but here is an historic snippet of President Obama’s speech to the LGBT community.
When was the last time you heard a nationally elected leader recount the story of the Stonewall Riots?

“Once that spirit takes hold, there is little that can stand in its way”" LOOK IN THE FREAKING MIRROR TO SEE WHAT IS HOLDING US BACK NOW!
Great that he talked about it.
Not like Reagun, who couldn’t get the word Aids out of his mouth.
But, now is time to see some action, not just words, Mr.President
I have never seen a national leader do anything but AVOID speaking about gay rights as civil rights. In spite of the comments about administration’s foot-dragging by my gay brothers and sisters, I am enthusiastic about the prospect that we will make great progress during the full course of Obama’s eight years in office.
Ah, more lip service. How nice. I’m sure Dan Choi is reall appreciative at this point.
Mere “crumbs” from the Obama table.
We’re supposed to be content with “crumbs”. No way. Not in 2009 and certainly not in 2010.
We need to be sure Obama keeps listening.
We need to keep the pressure on both him and on Congress to pass laws that help all and not just some.
I expect and demand to see laws passed for our community in 2009 and in 2010. But that will happen only with vigilance, persistence and pressure.

Meanwhile gay brothers and sisters in Pennsylvania, stand up to those like state senator Eichelberger in Harrisburg, PA who say “we’re allowing gay couples to exist”.
Just google Keystone Progress, enter there and then click on the Eichelberger tab with “allowing gay couples to exist”. and check around and you will soon come up with things like a radio debate between pro marriage equality PA lawmaker Daylin Leach (who is working to bring marriage equality to PA) and his opponent on this issue PA lawmaker John Eichelberger (who wants a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality in PA.
Eichelberger’s words spell out his ugly point of view and Leach asks him leading questions that are obnoxious in nature but gets Eichelberger to put his repulsive points of views out in a total bare and unglossed over fashion that leaves little to the imagination as to where he stands. NO, says he, GAY OUUPLES ARE NOT BEING PUNISHED. THEY ARE ALLOWED TO EXIST.
This brings to mind a time not long ago when gays NOT ALLOWED TO EXIST. We were exterminated, tortured for names of other gays and sent to concentration camps in the middle of the last century by Nazi Germany. Calls and delivered petitions for Eichelberger to apologize were openly brushed aside by him.
Time for PA residents to keep the pressure on him and to find a worthy progay candidate who will work to advance the rights and well-being of all PA citizens to take his seat from him at the next election. He needs to be sent hunting for a new job where he can’t harm people by the millions.
i love that its more out in the open now and change is coming but as many have said it;s coming very slowly i just cant wait to one day marry who ever i want may it be a man or a woman and not be exiled for it and to be married in evert state not just one. but im very mad on how he is handling the military he;s going with the “dont ask, dont tell” and that is not right if they want to be open and gay and serve the country that way WHY CANT THEY….
We all know the story. Its great to hear the president of the US recognize that we are fighting for our rights. We still are treated as lesser americans, we still suffer discrimination and violence, we still sacrifice more than anyone to be who we are! Now its time for action. All LGBT and their familie and friends must in one voice say: I am a gay american with the same rights as any other!
Once again, the President is challenging us to stand up and DEMAND our rights. He is recounting how things have changed in the past and letting us know that we will have to show that same determination now. He is not going to hand us our rights on a silver platter…it doesn’t fit in to his political agenda – he would alienate too many people. If we want our rights we have to get off our computers, off our behinds, stop waiting for tomorrow and go out there and take them.
I Never heard a world leader speak words that allow the spirit of the human spirit to surface for a breath long awaited with such fidelity and praise. It’s as if they fought to be human, and more especially on the Anniversary of this special day. For those that fought for the freedoms I personally enjoy today – a direct result of the selfless sacrifice others paved for the rest of us – we all thank you.
