Stottlemyer: Pat Robertson spouts more nonsense

Earlier today, 700 Club host, televangelist, and frequent homophobe Pat Robertson said that people are “made homosexual because of a coach or a guidance counselor or some other male figure who has abused them.”
Really, Pat? I’m sorry, but when were the gay penguins abused? And I assure you, I have never received abuse by any male figures in my life.
You tell this mother that she must “accept” her son, but then tell him to change. That, Mr. Robertson, is not acceptance. True acceptance would be for this mother to love her son regardless of whether he dates men or women and not constantly tell him that he is going to hell unless he “chooses” to be straight again.
It’s sad to think that men like Robertson, who seem so backwards and ignorant, have huge followings who end up helping things like Proposition 8 get passed in California. Let’s hope we can listen to the opinions of people like Rev. Gene Robinson and align ourselves with more progressive religious leaders and groups. Hopefully then we’ll be able to take away the control the religious right has regarding religious and moral arguments on marriage.
Ed. note: Cory is 365gay’s new intern! Please welcome him!

We don’t need to directly engage this form of rhetoric. Its more useful to show his financial controversies regarding his use of CNN and 700 club finances and properties. There is a wikipedia article on him, look under the Pat Robertson Controversies article, subsection “Charles Taylor, Diamonds, gold controversy” to see how he used the republican party to cover the tracks of his gold and diamond mining ventures around the world.
Hi Cory and welcome to the family. Hope we hear alot from you in the future.
I may be assuming too much here, and you know all about the word assume, that Mr. Robertson had a little more education than that to make such a stupid statement like we are gay because we were abused buy a coach or counselor. I have been out of the closet since I was 15, and I had a crush on my gym coach when I was in high school. How does that figure into the equasion?
He is the proof that somewhere in his youth along with most his age are completely brainwashed by their religion. He is part of the generaton that has been unable to accept change in anything. To him and his kind we are still living in the depression era of the 30’s. Hello, this is the 2009 depression and things are a little different. It must be difficult to accept changes like equality for all when you lived so much of your life in segregated and bigoted times. You just can’t let go of those ideologies can you. Brainwashing does work. Mr. Robertson is living proof. Well, I am 65 years old and I have no problem accepting change and never did. I accept that you and your kind will be held accountable when you get to those pearly gates. I hope you got your excuses ready.
Good grief, man! Isn’t this guy ever gonna die? I think he loves the sound of his own voice [like my old man did] and thinks everyone is entitled to his opinion!
In recent months, I’ve both read it and heard it said that the Christians like Robertson, the now-deceased Falwell and others like them are actually the anti-gay industry, and need those dollars to keep coming in, just to keep their industry afloat. After seeing how some pastors handle business in their congregations, I wonder also if it isn’t trying to prop up their own egos. Sadly, it took me YEARS to see the light about that. Now, it just seems that that is all they are about, “against” something, never for anything, or anyone, except their own cronies. Holy Toledo!!! Sounds like politics!!! [Lord, have mercy on US!!!]
Well-stated above in another posting, the young people of today are much more accepting of gays and lesbians, even than my fellow baby-boomers. My parents’ generation is dying off, thankfully, and taking with them their judgmental attitudes, and even some baby-boomers have fallen prey to their hateful rhetoric. Honestly, when will they get it, that some of us just DON’T freakin’ care about what they have to say?!?
OMG he looks Like that FREAKY FLYING SAUCER COMET CULT GUY….Hmm I remember when the Bakers Started there Ministry, Tammy Actually was not afraid of Homosexuals she even stated that GOD loved All Christians. All People whether they had Aids, were Gay or Straight. THAT was the Undoing of Heritage Park and the Original T.B.N. & 700 Club. Oral and Pat I believe Conspired to bring them down. Maybe he could Learn some Lessons in Humanity from Tammy! Oh Wait that would mean that he is a TRUE man of God and has a Conscience and a soul and thst GOD does not need our money to save our souls. ” HELP I am Stuck on the Planet of the Singing Dancing Idiot Freak People!”
well how old is he? won’t be around for too much longer I don’t think.
Not to be mean just stating the facts.
This man is a religious ‘wingnut!’ What is sad is that he has a forum…..aka 700 Club to regurgitate that nonsense.
Pfft… I WISH I had been abused, by my 7th grade gym coach. Woof! I wished it all through Jr. High. ;P
Pat Robertson is an ugly cunt!!!! – At least gay men are attractive and sexy.
Is that a picture of Pat Robinson, or G.W. Bush? Either way, one of them needs to pluck those nose hairs.
@ Jere, the word reverend is an adjective not a noun. and therefore not a title like pastor or minister or priest. so the old bastard can still use it
Glad to have you aboard, Cory! As for our dear friend and hapless crusader, Pat Robertson, it is my hope that some day he finds himself in a hospital in which both his doctor and all his nurses are gay. He needs to realize that gays and lesbians exist throughout society and are not as evil as he is.
Interesting many of us had crushes on OLDER men when we were young(er)…when I was 13…I went camping with a friend and his dad….his dad was muscular & very handsome…and Dammm IF I wasn’t HOPING/Imagining having HOT sex and being seduced by that man…..Nothing happened, but in my mind it did/and I wanted it too…lol
When I was in junior high my Sunday School teacher, a hunky 6′8″ 300 lb retired football coach/daddybear spent an hour one day warning us that when we got to high school, other boys would try to have sex with us, but that we should remain pure and resist temptation. I spet all 4 years of high school waiting for all of the gay sex he promised us, but it never happened. I should have sued him.
So if gay men were made that way because they were abused by a prominent male figure in their lives, does that mean that bisexual men are so because they were just a little bit abused? Perhaps they just got fondled once and that’s what made them the way they are. That’ll be it.
Well, thanks Pat Robertson for solving that mystery. If only we knew the nature of the head injury that made you the way you are.
So, if only I was abused by a female teacher when I was a child, I could have been turned straight. And then I could be like Pat! Yay!
