Seattle man attempts to have names of LGBT employees released

(Seattle) A Seattle City Light employee has filed a request to have the names and membership lists of a gay and lesbian employee organization released.

Philip Irving, who is affiliated with a conservative Christian organization, wished to create a group for employees who used to be homosexual but now identify as heterosexual, but says he faced opposition from the city. Irving now wants the city to release the names of organizers of city employee groups, specifically those of a Seattle Public Utilities “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Friends” group.

After being notified that their names will be released, an unspecified number of employees have sued the city, saying that the state public-records law does not allow for their names to be released.

“The information that we’re talking about is personal information,” said the plaintiffs’ attorney Cecilia Cordova, who is representing the employees with noted gay-rights attorney David Coffman. “The risk is privacy, and that’s something that is taken very seriously by the court system.”

    • sait, I’m sorry but I’m really confused by your post. 365gay publishes news of interest to LGBT people, with commentary from an LGBT perspective. It doesn’t seem especially biased to me. It probably is a little left of center, but that’s to be expected given that LGBT people tend to be progressive and a bit better informed than other groups. I’m fairly moderate myself, and if anything, some of the articles are a little conservative for my taste. Granted, there aren’t a lot of debate articles posted here. I find that reporting of facts is most helpful anyhow.

    • This site is loaded with biased journalism. Pertinant pieces of information are often left out of a story–creating a very skewed perception among readers (i.e., the arest of the 41yo male in a woman’s bathing suit). This site, along with many others promotes a very liberal pov, and fails to acknowledge that there are mainstream and conservative members within our community who may not subscribe to the same political ideologies as the far left. Denying honest debate or commentary from differing viewpoints is irresponsible journalism.

    • What this man is doing is no different than what 365gay.com is doing to me.

The first time I posted on this website, I used my full last name. I did not know my name would be published. This is a problem since I have a unique last name and I stated I am transsexual in the article.

I contacted 365gay.com on the contact us link and I received no reply. A Google search of my last name (something employers do frequently) still has a link to one of their articles.

No staff of 365gay.com (including Jennifer Vanasco)has the right to condemn the Christian Right or post stories that will lead to condemnation when they do the same thing.

    • Sounds like a payback move in retaliation for publicizing people who made $$$ contributions to Prop 8

    • Absolutely! Obviously, they will stop at nothing to harass and try to intimidate the LGBT community. Sad, really, truly sad.

    • This is a new low for both the Christian Right and for Seattle Public Utilities.
