A statement from the mother of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado
Miriam Mercado gave this statement to the team organizing the weekend’s vigils:
“When my son told me he was gay, I told him, ‘Now, I love you more.’ I want to tell the world that hatred is not born with human beings, it is a seed that is planted by adults and is fostered creating a climate of intolerance and violence. We must change our ways and understand that anyone …could have been my son. And I want everybody to know that Jorge Steven was a very much loved son.”
Below, a heartbreaking video where Mercado thanks those who have supported her after the death of her son.

I have to say that I am amazed at how the parents of those in our community who have been most victimized have come forward. Mrs. Shepherd and now Mrs. Mercado. To take what must be one of the most painful moments in their life and deal with it so openly when there must be such overwhelming pain there is phenomenal. I only hope the day comes when there are no more martyrs in our community.
God bless you Mrs. Mercado for being so brave during your time of tremendous and unspeakable sorrow. Our community shares your sadness at this senseless act of violence directed at your beautiful son, and our deepest thoughts and prayers are with you as you and your family struggle to deal with this terrible, terrible tragedy.
Mrs. Mercado, you are EXACTLY right…ADULTS/SOCIETY/RELIGION……. TEACH/PREACH HATE!!!!. May God Bless you and help you through this difficult time. I am so sorry.
Can someone send me the link to the original story since I have no idea what is going on.
Isn’t puerto rico very very Catholic, as is Jamaica?
When is the church going to be put on trial as an accessory to Jorge’s murder.
And in Jamaica, the son of one of their ambassadors was gay. He had his penis cut off, and was murdered. I don’t know which year this happened, but I was told about it by a Jamaican who lives in the USA
All in the name of Jesus of course. The church’s meally mouthed words to the ignorant homophobes are what causes these murders, and they damned well know exactly what they are doing.
No one is above the law, and that includes the churches.
