365 Gay: Living

Tonys are gay, gay, gay

, AfterElton.com

The 63rd Annual Tony Awards aired on CBS last night, kicking off with Sir Elton John, technical glitches, Liza at her Liza-ist, tons of hot musical theater guys, hair (beautiful hair), Dolly Parton, a gaggle of flying Billy Elliots, and what may be the single greatest television moment ever filmed … Poison lead skank Bret Michaels being cold cocked by a giant “Broadway” sign.

Oh, and all this happens in the first ten minutes!

Watching the Tony Awards is always bittersweet for me. As much as I love seeing the best of Broadway on TV every year, it brings me closer to the realization that I’ll probably never see any of these shows in person. The dream of moving to New York and becoming a theater groupie dies a little each time my knees crack when I stand up or when I tell those damn kids to get off my lawn.

It’s a shame, too, since I already had the title for my Broadway groupie memoirs picked out: Snicks and the City (perfect, don’t you think? And totally original.)

But I’m thankful I can at least see the highlights every year, and the 2009 Tony Awards started off with the most expensive, not to mention elaborate opening number they’ve ever attempted.

Elton John performing “Chair and Chair Alike”

It started off with Elton performing a song from Billy Elliot which had something to do with electricity and being “free”, and had boys flipping across the stage and flying through the air (but unfortunately not dressed like ninjas).

Elton’s mic went out a few times, but that was nothing compared to the gangs from West Side Story, who came out and whispered threats at each other until the sound was finally turned up.

Little did Bret Michaels know that Broadway doesn’t suffer gladly those who lip-synch (or stuff their pants with bratwurst)

Next up was a Bret Michaels look-a-like (just let that sink in for a moment), who introduced a number from Rock of Ages featuring the “real” Bret Michaels (just let that sink in for a moment).

Bret and the rest of Poison “performed” Nothin’ But a Good Time, and it was flawless … because it was fake. Bret gave what may be the worst lip-synch attempt ever seen (at one point you could see him coughing as the words still magically emanated from the microphone).

    • Truthfully, it was one of the worst Tonys I remember. Who ever was doing the producing/directing, fell down on their job terribly. I was offending by the In Memoriam section and appalled by the mistakes done by so-called professionals everywhere. This is the best of Broadway??? Don’t make me laugh ’cause it’s surely making me cry.

    • Neil Patrick Harris is sooooooo talented.
Pleeeez dear god of broadway, bring him back to host the Tony Awards next year!I thought his suit looked great…better on him than on Whoopi Goldberg.(yawn!)
Microphone/Sound problems…who cares? This years Tony’s was entertaining, uplifting, outrageous, emotional and well produced,as well as,Gay,Gay,Gay!!! THANK GOD for the Broadway Community and it’s love and acceptance for ALL.
If we could just channel that sanity into the minds of the ignorant, they would come to realize the value of the Gay Community in every facet of their lives,in the Military,in the work force,
      in Parenting,and yes,on Broadway.
All this inspired by the TONY AWARDS!
      I’m just sayin’…

    • Gay, gay, gay is right! I joke with my straight friends that the Tonys are my “gay Super Bowl Sunday”. I tell them that as part of the “deal”, they get February, I get June!

I loved the show. I thought Neil Patrick Harris did a great job (better than Whoopi). They should have used him more, but hey, this is the night for the nominees. One of his best jokes was when he took a swipe at Jeremy Piven with the sushi. “I could just eat these all day every day!!” I roared.

His closing number was hilarious. I hope they ask him to do it again next year.

The only problem I saw (or heard) was the constant microphone problems. It really came to a head when one of the stagehands ran out and gave one of the actors from “Guys and Dolls” a microphone for him to be heard. Back in Broadway’s olden days (Merman, Channing, et al.), a microphone was unthinkable, but hey, that is today’s reality.

One great moment was when “Hair” won for best revival. I always thought it a travesty that such a great groundbreaking musical was denied its rightful Tony. It lost in ‘69 to “1776″. I mean, can anybody hum the tune “Momma, Look Sharp”?! It’s nice to see that this was corrected.

The Tonys always give short shrift to plays, which is sad. I thought it was neat when they showed snippets from an animated background, but it wasn’t enough.

      Overall, job well done.

One last thought: Raul Esparza, if you are reading this, MARRY ME!

    • The Tony Awards were, in short, absolutely wonderful. Especially Neil Patrick Harris’s wonderful song at the very end. Who knew he could carry a tune . . . and what a tune it was, too!
