Bill James defends himself - kind of.

After Mecklenburg County, NC Commissioner Vilma Leake spoke in favor of a domestic partnerships benefit bill – revealing that her son had been gay and died of AIDS – Commissioner Bill James asked her, “Your son was a homo?”

Steve Rothaus notes that James today sent an email to the FOX News affiliate WCCB-TV in Charlotte:

“Vilma is a religious hypocrite.”

“She was married to a Bishop in the AME Zion church. This church has historically opposed homosexuality.”

“In justifying her position last night in public she used her son’s ‘lifestyle’ and his death from HIV-AIDS to justify voting for benefits to allow individuals to use tax dollars to engage in the same behavior that resulted in her son’s death.”

“It is akin to someone whose son is an alcoholic and died from the disease, using his death from drinking as justification to have the taxpayers pay for more booze.”

Watch Fox’s video:

A conservative Republican radio host, blogger and self-described citizen journalist is apologizing for calling New Hampshire's Democratic Party chairman derogatory gay names.

(Concord, NH) A conservative Republican radio host, blogger and self-described citizen journalist is apologizing for calling New Hampshire’s Democratic Party chairman derogatory gay names – comments his party and a leading gay activist are condemning.

Doug Lambert called gay Democratic Party Chair Raymond Buckley offensive names while a webcam was streaming to the Internet last weekend.

Lambert apologized to Buckley on the blog GraniteGrok. But New Hampshire Freedom to Marry Coalition executive director Mo Baxley said Monday the Republican Party should muzzle Lambert and denounce his comments as hateful to gays.

Party spokesman Ryan Williams later condemned Lambert’s comments as “completely inappropriate, offensive and hurtful.”

New Hampshire in June became the sixth state to legalize gay marriage, reflecting its changing demographics from reliably Republican and conservative to more liberal. The law takes effect Jan. 1.

Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl running back for the Chiefs, apologized Tuesday to his team, fans and the NFL "for the words I used."

(Kansas City, Mo.) The Kansas City Chiefs have barred running back Larry Johnson from team activities pending an investigation into his use of a homosexual slur this week.

Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl running back for the Chiefs, apologized Tuesday to his team, fans and the NFL “for the words I used.”

“I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate,” he said. “I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said.”

Johnson posted the slur on his Twitter account Sunday in a response to another tweet. On Monday, he said it again in refusing to talk with reporters, according to a recording made by the Kansas City Star.

The Chiefs and the NFL are investigating.

The Western Athletic Conference is reprimanding Hawaii coach Greg McMackin for his derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame's chant before last year's Hawaii Bowl.

(Honolulu) The Western Athletic Conference is reprimanding Hawaii coach Greg McMackin for his derogatory comment while describing Notre Dame’s chant before last year’s Hawaii Bowl.

The university already has suspended McMackin for 30 days without pay. He’s volunteered to take an additional 7 percent pay cut from his $1.1 million salary.

The coach also has apologized for using the gay slur during a media briefing last week at the WAC football preview in Salt Lake City.

The WAC said Monday it reprimanded McMackin for violating the conference’s sportsmanship code. The league says any further violations will result in a minimum one-game suspension.

“Coach McMackin’s comments were clearly offensive, violated the WAC Code, and are not condoned by either Hawaii or the WAC,” WAC commissioner Karl Benson said in a statement.

Benson said he appreciates the quick and decisive actions by Hawaii Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw and athletic director Jim Donovan,” as it has made my job in processing this very unfortunate situation much easier.”

It was the most memorable speech in "Big Brother" history, but fans didn't hear all of it.

(Los Angeles) It was the most memorable speech in “Big Brother” history, but fans didn’t hear all of it.

Television viewers watching the “Big Brother 11″ eviction episode Thursday only heard part of contestant Chima Simone’s petition to stay on the voyeuristic CBS reality show.

Host Julie Chen later called it “the most memorable last plea speech we’ve ever heard.”

But the audio cut out right as the 32-year-old freelance journalist referenced a derogatory term for people of Mexican descent that fellow nominee Braden Bacha, a 28-year-old model-actor, had used against two other contestants. Bacha’s use of the term was also edited out.

Also censored was Simone saying that Bacha had used a sexually insulting word to describe host Chen, who also co-hosts “The Early Show.”

Bacha was eliminated; Simone saved.

CBS said the statements were removed from the broadcast because they were offensive and did not meet the network’s standards. Gay slurs slung by contestant Jeff Schroeder during an argument on Tuesday’s episode were also left on the cutting room floor. The only place viewers could hear the heated words was on the show’s live streaming Internet feed.

The network said in a statement Friday that “any views or opinions expressed in personal commentary by a houseguest appearing on ‘Big Brother,’ either on any live feed from the house or the broadcast, are those of the individuals speaking and do not represent the views or opinions of CBS or the producers of the program.”

For 11 seasons, “Big Brother” has isolated contestants – or houseguests, as they’re referred to on the show – from the outside world. They live under constant surveillance on a soundstage constructed to look like a house. Once a week, the contestants vote to evict each other in hopes of being the last houseguest standing and winning the $500,000 grand prize.

On Showtime 2’s “Big Brother After Dark,” an uncensored and unedited live broadcast of what’s happening inside the house for three hours each night, Simone said the producers told her that her speech was censored. She also said she confronted producers about editing out the slurs.

“I said, I don’t think it’s fair because I don’t think they showed when it first was said,” Simone told her fellow houseguests during “Big Brother After Dark” following Thursday’s live eviction episode on CBS. “And I was like, ‘If someone’s a racist, they should be portrayed as one. You shouldn’t edit it to make them look good.’”

“Big Brother” has a history of contestants who spew controversial slurs. Ninth season winner Adam Jasinski was fired from the United Autism Foundation after using an offensive word to refer to autistic children. Eighth season contestant Amber Siyavus ignited a firestorm outside the “Big Brother” house when she said Jewish people tend to be “really money-hungry” and “selfish.”

An Australian TV host said Tuesday that foul-mouthed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay would never again be welcome on her show after he hurled insults and sexual references at her.

(Canberra, Australia) An Australian TV host said Tuesday that foul-mouthed celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay would never again be welcome on her show after he hurled insults and sexual references at her during a food and wine fair.

Ramsay is the volatile star of U.S.-based reality television programs “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares” – ratings winners for Australia’s Nine Network. The network also broadcasts the popular “A Current Affair” television show, hosted by high-profile journalist Tracy Grimshaw.

After an uneventful appearance by Ramsey on Grimshaw’s show Friday night, the British chef and restaurateur attended a food and wine tasting event Saturday attended by about 3,000 people in the southern city of Melbourne.

Ramsay stunned the audience by unleashing a string of insults at Grimshaw in her absence, calling her a lesbian and likening her to a pig. Ramsay repeated the insults Sunday and Monday at the same food exposition. Later he said he was only joking.

Grimshaw, though, failed to see the humor and retaliated on her program Monday night, calling Ramsay an “arrogant narcissist” and a “bully.”

“Obviously Gordon thinks that any woman who doesn’t find him attractive must be gay,” Grimshaw said. “For the record, I don’t and I’m not.”

Grimshaw continued her attack Tuesday in a radio interview during which she said Ramsay would not be invited back on her program.

“I’m not interested in speaking to the bloke again,” Grimshaw told Fairfax Radio. “I can’t imagine any circumstances where I would want to interview him again.”

Ramsay’s publicist did not return The Associated Press’s telephone call on Tuesday.
