In Planned Parenthood's response ad, sports personalities examine sports, families and decision-making.

Planned Parenthood responded to Sunday’s controversial Focus on the Family Super Bowl ad with an ad of their own.

The planned Super Bowl ad features University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam, advocating against abortion. Pam Tebow carried her son to term despite doctor’s advice because it was determined to be a high-risk pregnancy. The ad will air both before and during the Super Bowl.

Planned Parenthood’s spot features two other sports stars: U.S. Olympian Al Joyner and former college and professional football player Sean James, who share their thoughts about sports and families.

“The Tebow story underlines what Planned Parenthood has learned from the millions of women doctors and nurses at its health centers have cared for over nearly a century,” Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said in a statement.

“Women take decisions about their health very seriously. They consider their doctors’ advice, they talk with their loved ones and people they trust, including religious leaders, and they carefully weigh all considerations before making the best decision for themselves and their families. This is true whether it’s a decision about their choice of contraception, specific medical treatments for illnesses like cancer, challenges related to medically complex pregnancies, or any other important health care issue they are considering.”

The Planned Parenthood statement notes that Focus on the Family’s hope is to see legal abortion outlawed, except in rare cases where the woman’s life is at risk.

“Planned Parenthood urges all Americans to ponder the true meaning of the Tebow family’s experience — one in which a woman was presented with medical and moral considerations and made a deeply personal decision in private without government interference,” said Richards. “That is exactly what we want every woman to be able to do when she must make important and highly personal medical decisions.”

A controversial anti-abortion Super Bowl spot has generated outcry from thousands.

Focus on the Family’s planned Super Bowl ad featuring Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is generating outcry from thousands of people – enough to give rise to a Facebook page with more 2,500 fans urging CBS to reject the anti-abortion spot.

In addition, nearly 1,500 people have signed a change.org petition and contacted CBS about the decision to air the controversial 30-second commercial.

Part of the outcry stems from CBS’ decision in 2004 to reject an ad from The United Church of Christ that promoted the denomination’s anti-discrimination stance.

A CBS spokesman at the time told The Boston Globe, “We have a longstanding policy of not accepting advocacy advertising.”

But when questioned by The Advocate on Thursday, a CBS spokesman would not comment on past decisions.

“Our standards and practices process continues to adhere to a policy that ensures that all ads on all sides of an issue are appropriate for air,” the spokesman told The Advocate regarding the ad.

Focus on the Family’s upcoming ad features the Florida Gator’s football star Tebow and his mother, Pam, sharing their story of how she chose not to abort him despite warnings he might be stillborn. Tebow, a devout Christian, is notorious for wearing Bible verses inscribed in his game-day eye black.

A spokesman for Focus on the Family told The Denver Post that Tebow agreed to the ad because abortion is an issue he feels strongly about.

Colorado Springs, Colo.-based Focus on the Family is known for its anti-abortion stance and promotion of marriage solely for heterosexual couples.

The ad is set to air both before and during the Feb. 7 big game.

Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl running back for the Chiefs, apologized Tuesday to his team, fans and the NFL "for the words I used."

(Kansas City, Mo.) The Kansas City Chiefs have barred running back Larry Johnson from team activities pending an investigation into his use of a homosexual slur this week.

Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl running back for the Chiefs, apologized Tuesday to his team, fans and the NFL “for the words I used.”

“I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate,” he said. “I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said.”

Johnson posted the slur on his Twitter account Sunday in a response to another tweet. On Monday, he said it again in refusing to talk with reporters, according to a recording made by the Kansas City Star.

The Chiefs and the NFL are investigating.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson used a gay slur for the second time in as many days Monday.

(Kansas City, Mo.) Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson used a gay slur for the second time in as many days Monday, the Kansas City Star reported on its Web site.

Johnson refused to speak with reporters, a day after the Chiefs’ 37-7 home loss to the Chargers. Sitting in front of his locker, he turned away and muttered the slur in telling reporters to get “out of here,” according to the Star, which recorded the comment.

On Sunday, Johnson belittled rookie head coach Todd Haley on Twitter in a series of posts that also included the same gay slur.

Haley said Monday the Chiefs were looking into “a couple of situations” involving Johnson, but declined further comment. Asked about the slurs, he said the team was “gathering facts.”

“I will say that how our players conduct themselves with the media and through the media is very important to myself as a head coach, and to the Chiefs as an organization,” Haley said.

Johnson, drafted in the first round out of Penn State in 2003, needs only 75 yards rushing to overtake Priest Holmes’ club record of 6,070 yards. But he is no stranger to controversy, having been benched for three games last year and suspended for one in connection with separate incidents involving women in bars.

The tweets were posted to the “Toonicon” account, an online alias the Star reported Johnson has said is his. The account includes a link to Johnson’s personal Web site. Chiefs spokesman Bob Moore said the team could not verify that is Johnson’s account.

The Twitter remarks were posted after San Diego routed the Chiefs (1-6).

One tweet read: “My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches.” That was followed by: “My father played for the coach from “rememeber the titans”. Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn.”

Haley, hired earlier this year to replace the fired Herm Edwards, did not play high school or college football and attended college on a golf scholarship. He did not enter coaching until he was in his 20s. He was hired as Kansas City’s head coach after serving as offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals in their Super Bowl run last year.

His father, Dick Haley, is one of the NFL’s most distinguished scouts and personnel men, having helped build the Steelers dynasty in the 1970s. Todd Haley has spoken of how he immersed himself in football while growing up and traveling with his father to games and on scouting trips.

“I’m very proud of what I’ve done to get to where I am,” he said. “I’m very proud of my results as a position coach, as a coordinator. Right now, am I proud of my head coaching record? No. But I intend to do everything I can to change that.”

The tweets drew responses, including one that referred to a nightclub incident in which Johnson was accused of spitting in someone’s face.

Johnson’s response include a three-letter gay slur. The final post read: “Make me regret it. Lmao. U don’t stop my checks. Lmao. So ‘tweet’ away.”

A two-time Pro Bowler, Johnson he was benched for three games by Edwards last year for an unspecified violation of team rules. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him for the fourth game for violating the league’s player conduct policy in connection with incidents involving two women in bars.

Johnson then was sentenced to two years’ probation after pleading guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace. One woman accused him of throwing a drink on her and another said he had pushed her head at a Kansas City night spot.

A judge earlier this year suspended the sentence and said he would remove the guilty plea from the public record if Johnson finished the probation period without further incidents.

He was one of the best running backs in the NFL in 2005 and ‘06, rushing for more than 1,700 yards in each season. In 2006, he set an NFL record with 410 carries, but his production fell to 559 yards the following season after sitting out training camp in a contract dispute.

Running behind a poor offensive line, he has not done well this season, averaging only 2.7 yards per carry.

1. Anyone NOT going to the October 10-11 DC march? Reasons? I’m 85 percent sure I’ll be there. The 15 of doubt is purely budget issues.

2. Reason 519 why I’m smitten with the day job: on Fridays the office refrigerator is cleaned out by the office manager. Last week he started the throwing out process at 2:30 PM, approximately 30 minutes before I wanted to eat. My lunch ended up in the garbage bin.

3. Anyone else spend Saturday watching the Ted Kennedy funeral and burial?

4. Are you football fans ready for the upcoming season? No fan of the sport. Give me teams to root for, college and pros.

5. Hopefully the killer of Tyli’a “NaNa Boo” Mack is found. If you are of the praying kind, send your thoughts to her family.

6. Finally saw the episode of “American Dad” called Lincoln Lover. What a hoot!

7. For some reason I’m on a Nat King Cole kick.

8. Reason 912 why I have a soft spot for conservatives: they moan and groan when liberal celebrities yap about politics, but reach heights of sexual delight when a conservative actor takes the bus to crazy town. And yeah, anyone who pushes Obama is making the country “socialist” and he is “causing civil unrest” memos is loonier than a nutty loon.

9. Finished The Brothers Karamazov. Wish I had something profound to say.

10. Does Dick Cheney understand the role of the Attorney General?

1. Nothing wrong with being against health care reform but if you pimp out death panels talking points, you are either dumb, intellectually dishonest, or a combo of the two.

2. Anyone who is for health care reform should be reading Megan McArdle. She offers a fair, honest, and smart rebuttal.

3. Why is Rosie O’Donnell stoking her old feud with Elisabeth Hasselbeck?

4. No more Woodstock stories! Please. It was a freaking concert! That’s all.

5. Levi Johnston adores his gay fans. Hanging out with Kathy Griffin has done him wonders. Will Sarah Palin twitter (or is it tweet?) about this?

6. Anyone see MSNBC’a Rachel Maddow on Meet the Press yesterday? What do you think of her performance?

7. Buddy Guy equals cool.

9. George Michael just needs to hire a driver.

Can the police ever do anything that is stupid?

Health care reform. Two wars (you all better be reading the articles of Michael Yon), an economy that gives everyone the shakes. Given all this the media kept its eye on one word used by President Barack Obama in his most recent press conference.

On Wednesday night, the president was asked about Henry L. Gates’ run in with the Cambridge police. He admitted his bias upfront, described the incident, and noted Cambridge officers “acted stupidly.” The press jumped on that word and to hear some tell it Obama has something against the police.

Getting stupid on Obama’s use of the word stupid is part of the whole “give the police the benefit of the doubt” ethos. No one denies police work is a difficult job, filled with hazards of the highest order. However, police do make mistakes and often times act without thought. Don’t believe? Ask Chad Gibson what he thinks about the perfectibility of the police. If you don’t trust him what about Ryan Moats? He plays professional football and was pulled over by an officer. His crime? Rolling through a red light. Why? his mother-in-law was dying.

Okay, Moats asked for the officer’s abuse. He wasn’t being respectful enough to the cop, who at one point in the conversation says “I can screw you over.” Want another example? How about the Oakland policeman who killed a man on a train platform. Some of you will argue the guy didn’t follow the officer’s orders like a good citizen should. Well Oscar Grant was lying face down on the ground, but Officer (now ex) Johannes Mehserle pumped bullets in him anyway. Can’t wait to see how that is justified!

For the record and it irks me this has to be said, but I know how some play here at 365: there is no suggestion from me the man who arrested Gates, Sergeant James M. Crowley, is a racist. From all accounts he is good at his job and a decent enough fellow. Yet, even after reading his report a few times (that has been contradicted by Gates), I’m still confused why he felt the need to arrest the professor in his house (and yes Virgina: the porch is part of the house).

It’s hypocritical of me to dog out the media about “Gate-gate” as I blather on about it also, so I’m done. However, this has to be said. While the Cambridge kabuki is entertaining, it keeps us away from our serious law and order troubles. I’m willing to bet Crowley, Gates, and Obama would all agree on that.

(Las Vegas, New Mexico) Six former high school athletes have denied charges they sexually assaulted younger teammates during a hazing incident at a preseason football camp.

State District Judge Eugenio Mathis on Monday placed the boys on house arrest, allowing them to leave under supervision only for school, work or to go to a community recreation center for two hours a day.

The former Robertson High School football team members, all 16 or 17, appeared in court Monday and denied the Children’s Court charges of criminal sexual penetration, kidnapping, conspiracy and other crimes.

A state police report included allegations of sodomy with a broomstick.

District Attorney Henry Valdez has filed a notice that he would seek adult punishment against the teens if they are convicted.

Juvenile sentencing could keep them in state custody until they were 21. Adult penalties could subject them to dozens of years in prison.

Head football coach Ray Woods and six assistants resigned in September amid allegations that coaches failed to adequately supervise the players or follow up on initial hazing allegations.
