Olivia is constructing what may be the first intentional lesbian housing development in the country.

One day in July, Gail Davis, 58, and her partner, Janyce Bender, 64, sat down at their computer to find an email from Olivia companies. They were already anticipating their upcoming Olivia cruise – but when they clicked to open the message, their excitement was overwhelming.

“Oh my gosh,” Davis said as she read the message in disbelief. Olivia, the lesbian-owned women’s travel company and record label, had finally come through with a decade-long promise: to open what may be the first large-scale lesbian housing development in the country.

Bender turned to her partner and said, “I absolutely want to do this.” Less than a week later they sent a $10,000 deposit and their registration was secured.

“Nobody really knew this was coming,” said Davis, “but then they send us this email that said ‘Hi, we’re ready to start taking reservations.’”

Olivia Communities will be a 334-unit resort-style living community in Tuscon, Ariz. Although anyone can purchase a home, the company is targeting lesbians.
“My whole vision of this has always been about creating community and creating a place where we can not only be free… but also the kind of community where you’re really connected with the people there and feel comfortable and happy in your environment,” said Judy Dlugacz, president and founder of Olivia Companies.

What makes this community unique, Dlugacz said, will be the social aspect. Women from their 20s to their 80s have put down deposits on condos in the development, though the most women fall in the 55- to 70-year-old age group. Olivia plans to have a full-time events coordinator who will bring in live entertainment, including comedy events and film festivals, and who will coordinate tea dances and other parties. Group excursions will be arranged to nearby locations like Las Vegas and Mexico.

(Melbourne, Australia) People over the age of 65 will soon be the majority and an aging gay population in Australia will soon have its own retirement village to be built near Melbourne.

The $25 million dollar development, called Linton Estate, has received final approval from officials at Ballan, northwest of the city.

It will feature single homes, townhomes, and apartments. There will be a tennis court, bowling green, and a multi-million dollar community center with a pool, spa and open-air theater.

There will be stores, restaurants, a business center and medical center.

“I put myself in the place of people. And whether we’re in a relationship or whether we’re single, we want to be surrounded by friends,” Developer Peter Dickson said.

“I want to do it different to anything that’s around … I wanted Linton Estate to be different to other retirement facilities and this has now come about, it’s a wonderful achievement for all.”

When the plan came up for final approval there were four objections filed by people opposed to a whole community for LGBT people.

But Shire Mayor, Dianne McAuliffe said the nature of the development inconsequential to the approval process.

“We don’t go into the nuts and bolts of who’s going to be living (there) with any of the applications we look at,” she said. “It’s a development that’s received planning approval.”

Dickson said he expected the work on the project to begin later this year.
