The temple in Salt Lake has a place where a couple who are getting their celestial marriage sealed pose for pictures. All the couples do this. It is right in front of the temple. So, if you want to protest what happened, the gay community their or going their should stand on top of that pedestal and refuse to move. Don't let the straight couples have their happy moment. Be in their face.

Also, mormons who go into the temple, whatever temple, have this vow of quietness. They use hand signals to communicate and very low voices in ceremonies because what they are doing is sacred. A way to protest is to make a loud piercing sound to break the quietness. March around the temples with horns and other noise makers. Destroy the sanctity of quiet. Let them know the cost of doing business.

Catholics can't turn people way at their churches is they are being quiet. Go to catholic churches on Sundays. Where a shirt expressing you r feelings. March down durning communion and ask for a blessing from the priest instead of communion. Let the parish see you.

With Evangelicals it is much harder. Anything you do can be drowned out and they will stop you at the door. So, somebody else is going to have to explain what to do for them.

As for the racial and ethnic minorities, we need to organize and make alliances and make consequences for not getting the population in support of our rights.

And finally, we need to organize more than just marching. We need to be a group that has political voice and power. If we fail to do that then we have completely failed.

Subject: don't protest at Mormon TEMPLES; there's nobody THERE most of the time

Get the word out, please: Mormon temples are not like Catholic or Episcopal cathedrals.

They have neither regular congregations nor regular Sunday services, except perhaps small ones for their staffs. I'm not sure about that.

You need to look up the local Stake Houses (church buildings) which are used all day Sunday by a rotation of Wards (parishes).

Wards are identified sometimes by name, and sometimes by number. I'm sure the GLBT ex-Mormons can tell us how to find them.

They tend not to have big signs on
their stake houses.

THAT'S where you'll have your impact, NOT at the Temples. Do one symbolic
demonstration at the Temples; perhaps keep holding regular demonstrations at the main one in Salt Lake, 'cause it's right downtown; but go after the local Stake Houses and KEEP THE DEMONSTRATIONS GOING.

But be nice, and non-violent.

Most run-of-the-mill Mormon people are, as opposed to their
black-SUV-driving "enforcers" (see "Latter Days" for details).

vanndean Said: November 10th, 2008 at 2:55 am:
"Check into the doing in Colorado City, and the activities associated with Mormons in West Texas. You might find that your denial of polygamy by Mormons might need a bit of revision."

They're called "Fundamentalist nutcases", and every religion has them. The actions of polygamist mormons are 100% contrary to the current teachings and policies of the Mormon church; they are neither supported nor approved of.

of course at this point I guess people will take any reason to hate the Mormon church. I'm not particularly fond of them myself right now, but _somebody_ has to stand up and straighten out the truth.

Ms Davis - as always your well written story of this event made me feel present when I could not be - thank you for that. My partner and I were one of the original 4000 couples married in San Francisco because of the couragr of Gavin Newsom. I have thought of Mayor Newsom and all our allies in the straight community as the darkness of Prop 8 washes across California; and my next thought is TAX THE CHURCHES!! It seems unbelievable to me that the IRS has allowed time and time again our civil rights to be trampled by religious organizations which have to date to spend millions advocating their political candidates and policies with nary a nickle paid in either taxes or penalties. I hope all reading your article will take the next step after the march and support both the pending law suits against Prop 8 as well as our determined blitz upon churches tax free status when the break the law. I have heard candidates endorsed at my former parish in WEHO, and again countless times via television and radio by the Evangelical community. Sometimes there is a sham organization in order to obey the letter of the law, but the spirit was given over to winning at any cost long ago. But I needn't tell you if it begins to hurt their pocket books in future they will think twice before attacking our civil rights again.

The ACT-UP die-in at St. Patrick's Cathedral was one of the most important acts of civil disobedience during the AIDS crisis. ACT-UP should organize similar surprise demostrations in the Mormon cult houses and Catholic churches of California. Cardinal Mahoney needs to be denounced for his self-deluding bigotry.

Melissa Hernandez Said: November 9th, 2008 at 6:00 pm Also, please do some research before bashing something you know nothing about. Today’s Mormons don’t have more than one wife. Polygamy is not practiced by the Mormon church and has not been practiced in over 100 years.

Perhaps it is you that needs to do some "research". It is true that some members of the Mormon faith do not practice polygamy just as it is also true that some members of the Mormon faith do still practice polygamy. Perhaps you need to get out more or read more or watch more reports of various members of the Mormon faith and their activities which cause them to run afoul of the law on occasion. Check into the doing in Colorado City, and the activities associated with Mormons in West Texas. You might find that your denial of polygamy by Mormons might need a bit of revision.
As for Mormon bashing, they have been doing it to gay people and to gay Mormons for many, many, many years. Perhaps it is time that they learned how it feels to be on the other end of the stick. If they are going to interfere in other peoples lives then perhaps they need some interference in their lives. I know that there are some Mormons that support gay marriage and gay people. I would be willing to bet that they are smart enough to figure out that gay protesters have nothing against them. Perhaps some of them should join in the protests and make the others stand up and take notice. I am willing to bet that what the others would do would be to excommunicate them for supporting their gay sons and daughters. I may not be on the streets bashing Mormons, but I pity the next young Mormon boys that step foot on my porch and wake me up on a Saturday morning.

Judicial decisions are how these issues have always been settled. e.g. Perez vs. Sharp, 1948. What are we doing using the initiative process to put anyone's civil rights to a popular vote? I can't believe that someone like Mr. Brown our State AG hasn't issued an opinion on this and simply stopped it.

Dear Melissa

You are an idiot. In a country run by you and your Mormon friends, gay people would not exist not matter how sympathetic individuals might be. LDS would make us go away. And you apparently would cooperate wtih this because you have 'so many friends' . It's a cult anyway.
Bash Mormons!!

It's easier to argue gender discrimination.

A guy can marry a girl.

A girl can't.

Gender discrimination. Period.
