Steve, it’s not a giving up. It’s a waking up. People are FINALLY waking up to the fact that they have been duped by the Dems and by Obama. It’s been a long time coming.

The White Knight Riots were 30 years ago yesterday. The Stonewall Riots were 40 years ago this June. There are too many in the community that have become far to complacent in the struggle for our plea for basic human rights. Maybe Obama is a good thing in that people will see that a politician that they support will lie directly to their face and ask for donations for their campaigns.

I’m really horrified by all the complaints about Obama. I realize they are from frustration vs the hope that, metaphorically speaking, he would send the christian haters to saudi arabia, where the king’s swordsman would teach them, too late, about religious hatred of a different variant.

But the gay community has a choice. To fall for frustration, to believe that Obama is the dictator with the same power to change things for the better. just as Satan Bush changed things for the worse until 2006,

Sorry. This is Realpolitik. More liberal judges, undoing the damage of 8 years of Satan himself take time.

You can pray that the repubs destroy themselves, which they are well on the way to doing.

But you can be an activist, in so many ways, and help build the base of support that the gay community needs to eventually win, as is beginning to happen.

Or you can bitch, and not vote, or waste votes on some third party candidate. A process that could take decades to become a significant political force.

Or we can all support the best we have, while working in so many ways to build the base of support that will make “…..with liberty and justice for all” a fact.

The choice is yours. The enemy of humanity, represented by the right wing of the republican party. our own christian taliban, would just be thrilled, unfortunately not to death, to see this community give up on Obama and company.

And then it would be just so easy to turn America into the new Nazi Razi empire.

So many of the comments here seem to indicate a give up mentality. Exactly what the christian taliban want us to do/

Sorry if you’re pissed, but I am on your side.

But it has taken me ten years of involvement to understand what is really happening.

And how the scum with their poisoned minds would like to finish the ruination of our nation.

Please don’t fall for it. It is like war – you take your best shot, and despite the disappointments, usually win.

Lisa, thank you for this story on Allen so many years after his murder. He came to my classroom in uniform with his younger brother, one of my students. He was very quiet and really very handsome. His mother worked so hard for justice in his murder.

During my own time in the Army I saw a pattern that holds true from any shitty Third World hellhole to Selma Alabama and Stonewall.
People demand equality. If they are denied equality by those in power, they seek justice. When justice has been denied too long they exact retribution.

Come the next time you place a vote, EXACT RETRIBUTION!

I sympathize with all the gay people who have had to live a life in the midst of such hell.

It should never have been, and should be stopped, but there is another angle to this.
I really do think Obama has every intention to do something about this, but remember every thing in politics is timing.
Not only is the gay thing a problem but there are dozens of other things he is working on at the same time. At this point we have a huge majority in the congress. This majority is however a very delicate one.

There are elections coming up next year, and there is nothing the fu*k tards on the other side of the isle would like is for Obama to correct this when there are other major things still undone. This would be cannon fodder for the wing nuts in the next election. Remember, there will not be the turn out for the next election there was in the last one. Obama is a political genius, and has learned the mistake Clinton made by putting this on the table to soon in his presidency. Maybe I am a fool but I have studied this mans strategy for a long time.

If there is to be movement on this issue it will be in between the 2010 election and his reelection in 2012. By this time the economy will be on the rebound and he will have the political clout to pull it off. Also he will need the gay vote to win again. By then several more states will have OK ed marriage. Hang in there brothers and sisters

remember everything in it’s time. I trust Obama.

Correction, Schindler did die in a war. He died as a result of an unspoken culture war where we are being attacked by an enemy that doesn’t even need to be our enemy in the first place. It doesn’t matter who or where you are. If you’re a soldier, it’s your own men against you. If you’re a student, then its your fellow students pushing you against the wall daily. ETC ETC
We have our place in the pecking order.

We should not forget Matt Shepard either.
Matthew Wayne Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998) was a student at the University of Wyoming who was tortured and subsequently murdered near Laramie, Wyoming. He was attacked on the night of October 6–7, 1998 and died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, on October 12, from severe head injuries.
Wyoming state law, crimes committed on the basis of sexual orientation are not prosecutable as hate crimes. During the trial, witnesses stated that Shepard was targeted because he was gay. His murder brought national as well as international attention to the issue of hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels. Laramie has not enacted any laws protecting gay people. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., used the word “hoax” to describe the killing of Matthew Shepard. See Seattle Post Intelligencer 04/30/09.

President Obama has forgotten the prejudice that black Americans are suffering with every day. This prejudice that simmers just below the surface of “civilized society”, while gay prejudice is OPEN and only acceptable prejudice that is vocalized in the pulpit and on TV, radio, news, books and internet. Homophobia is a learned thing, we are not born with hatred. Until we as a society come out of the stone ages, Allen R. Schindler Jr. and Matthew W. Shepard deaths won’t shock the public enough to say we won’t tolerate this hatred and bigotry any more! It must stop now. America must be a hate free zone.
