McElrath: Rick Warren, Obama? Really?!?!
Progressive groups are decrying the choice of Rick Warren to deliver the Invocation at the Presidential Inauguration as “disappointing” – but it is
far more than that.
“The Presidential Inaugural Committee, at the direction of President-elect Obama…will organize an inclusive and accessible inauguration that…unites the nation around our shared values and ideals.”
Shared values and ideals? Let’s let Rick Warren speak for himself.
Here’s Rick Warren equating marriage equality for same-sex couples with incest and pedophilia:
“The issue to me, I’m not opposed to that as much as I’m opposed to redefinition of a 5,000 year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one
guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.”
Of course, the Judeo-Christian definition of marriage that Warren refers to in the first part of this quote were essentially property contracts that did involve “one guy having multiple wives” – but that’s beside the point of this piece.
Here’s Rick Warren going even further and using the statistical lack of support by black Californian’s for marriage equality to justify his opinion that the rights of lesbian and gay citizens do not constitute civil rights:
“…this debate is not really about civil rights, but a desire for approval. The fact that 70% of blacks supported Prop 8 shows they don’t believe it is a civil rights issue. Gays in California already have their rights.”
The California Supreme Court saw the situation differently, but, in Warren’s view, the definition of the civil rights of minorities is open to definition by majority public opinion.
Here’s Rick Warren talking – in 2004 – about how HIV/AIDS was not an issue of concern for him until recently:
“Two years ago HIV/AIDS was not on my agenda; it was not even a blip on my radar.”
The deaths of more than 500,000 American citizens – the vast majority of whom were men who had sex with men – simply didn’t register on Warren’s radar over the course of more than two decades. The disease finally and rightly became a cause of concern for Warren and the Christians to whom he speaks when his wife brought to his attention the plight of children in Africa orphaned by the pandemic.
Same-sex relationships equal incestuous and pedophiliac abuses. Equal protection under the law for lesbian and gay American citizens isn’t the same thing as civil rights. The lives and deaths of gay men are less important than those of children or orphans.
The sad reality is that American gay men and lesbians have heard it all before.
But we didn’t expect to have such values and ideals validated by this President-Elect at this Inauguration.
Warren’s stated beliefs make it clear that – when he invokes God at the Inauguration – it is not the inclusive and all-loving God who is recognized and worshiped by lesbian and gay men of faith in this country. With an entire world of spiritual leaders at his beck and call for this historic event, Obama can and should do better.
The message for American gay men and lesbians in the choice of Rick Warren is that – once again – “everyone” means everyone but us.

Forget it, guys. We’ve been screwed again, and no one inside the Beltway really gives a crap. Same as it ever was.
Another march on Washington? Yeah, like that’ll make any difference. Chances are, we’ll hold it on a Saturday, when no one’s in town. Fat lot of good that’ll do, just like all the others.
Contact Obama’s transition team? You’d do better to pee in the wind.
The Gay Community should march on Washington.
Carolyn Wagner, I could not agree with you more….. We have work to do…. and we have lost so many brave and beautiful people in this struggle. FIGHT the bastards!
The right wing is who keeps adding fuel to the fires of hatred. Let’s all collectively PISS on them and put the fires OUT!
Thank you Rodney Moore and thank you Nathan!
Lets call him what he is a bigot, he is not a Christian because if he was a Christian he wouldn’t have attacked us like he did. We must do all we can to prevent such a vile excuse for a human being from receiving such an honor as being part of the presidential inauguration.
For those of you who are justifiably angry, there are things we can do other than just blog angrily at each other.
Let’s harness the anger, the energy and the justifiable rage and let’s fight for our rights. It’s a while away, but let’s all show up to Washington June 5th through 14th and March on DC for our rights.

Contacted the so called “change team.” The concern? Will we, as parents of hate crime victims will issue a press statement as to how this is such a slap in the face. Been busy supporting families newly impacted by an ever growing number of hate crimes we had not given this thought. We will try to get one out.
This is not to be taken lightly people. Obama has now demonstrated a character trait to all of us and we MUST get organized, work together. This is no longer just the lgbt community he is ignoring, it is the families and friends. Such which is an ever growing group. This is one change that is positive which I have seen over the past 10 years.
We must work together and recruit all who are willing to join us in the ongoing battle to pursue lgbt equality. Not just in marriage, but also in education, housing, parenting and hate crimes.
The most vunerable are the lgbt children. Warren went on about how sexual orientation is a choice that can be cured. Crap, it is religion that is the choice and fundamentalist viewpoints that we allow to have visibility in any forum is enabling those who feel justified to continue this holy war against lgbt people.
Please, please, in the memory of all who have lost their lives to this hate, speak up and loudly. You have my word that I am not the only mother who will do so and have been doing so for many years now.
HRC lost our support years back when they continued their support of a hate crime bill that excludes gender identity. This is the same bill that is floating in Congress.
Well, I just sent a message to the transition team expressing my displeasure on the issue of Rick Warren. Here is the address, in case you feel moved to do the same: http://change.gov/page/content/contact/
Don’t be shy about lambasting the idea of Warren at the inauguration. FOCUSED is what we need.
This is such a shame. Iam disappointed and more so saddened by this development from Obama.
As much as I don’t like it, Obama has bigger fish to fry right now than Prop 8. In the first place, Prop 8 is a state issue in California – it is being battled out IN California BY Californians (BTW this is NOT how I see it, it is how it is seen by the political players) Right now, ALL of Obama’s attention is focused on the economy. The reason is because of the old adage “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” Our economy effects (actaully) the whole planet.
If we want Obama and his administration to pay attention to US, we need to be louder and more boisterous with the mainstream media. HE basically needs to get kicked in the ass and told to wake up. WE need to supply the kick in the ass by not allowing ourselves to be used like a bunch of stooges for the right.
We need to make sure our battles are focused and well chosen. Being angry helps, but fighting with each other is EXACTLY what the right wants us to do. Don’t fall into that trap.
Barack sucks.
And he just desn’t get it. Does he even have someone to advise him on gay issues?!?!? He’s really messing up…so far he’s got what, like NOTHING right on this count. Does he even care??? I wonder if he even knows what prop 8 is…probably not.

“That’s it! We need to start working on getting him elected for a second term because he’s been so good for us so far.”
You are either missing or ignoring my point. WE have to stir up enough people to WIN Obama (and the rest of the country) to our side. Our whining and sniveling WON’T get the job done.
I AGREE that it is a pain in the ass, I AGREE that the right (in my opinion anyway) are no better than the NAZI party from the 30’s through the 40’s. BUT, we have a much better chance of winning our rights with THS man in office than we would have with McCain.
Hillary lost the nomination (nothing is going to change that) SO, back to my point….. The right wing is our SWORN enemy, time to hold our FRIEND’S feet to the fire. MAKE them see our side of the issue and MAKE the public aware of our plight. 365gay.com is us preaching to the choir. Time to get off our butts people, the mainstream media is where we should be taking the fight against the right.
Colin, I laughed so hard I spit water all over my monitor.
