McElrath: Rick Warren, Obama? Really?!?!

, Renna Communications

Progressive groups are decrying the choice of Rick Warren to deliver the Invocation at the Presidential Inauguration as “disappointing” – but it is
far more than that.

It is an act of spiritual violence against lesbian and gay American citizens and a profound betrayal of the philosophy of inclusion and unity espoused by President-Elect Obama.

“The Presidential Inaugural Committee, at the direction of President-elect Obama…will organize an inclusive and accessible inauguration that…unites the nation around our shared values and ideals.”

Shared values and ideals? Let’s let Rick Warren speak for himself.

Here’s Rick Warren equating marriage equality for same-sex couples with incest and pedophilia:

“The issue to me, I’m not opposed to that as much as I’m opposed to redefinition of a 5,000 year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister being together and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that marriage. I’m opposed to one
guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.”

Of course, the Judeo-Christian definition of marriage that Warren refers to in the first part of this quote were essentially property contracts that did involve “one guy having multiple wives” – but that’s beside the point of this piece.

Here’s Rick Warren going even further and using the statistical lack of support by black Californian’s for marriage equality to justify his opinion that the rights of lesbian and gay citizens do not constitute civil rights:

“…this debate is not really about civil rights, but a desire for approval. The fact that 70% of blacks supported Prop 8 shows they don’t believe it is a civil rights issue. Gays in California already have their rights.”

The California Supreme Court saw the situation differently, but, in Warren’s view, the definition of the civil rights of minorities is open to definition by majority public opinion.

Here’s Rick Warren talking – in 2004 – about how HIV/AIDS was not an issue of concern for him until recently:

“Two years ago HIV/AIDS was not on my agenda; it was not even a blip on my radar.”

The deaths of more than 500,000 American citizens – the vast majority of whom were men who had sex with men – simply didn’t register on Warren’s radar over the course of more than two decades. The disease finally and rightly became a cause of concern for Warren and the Christians to whom he speaks when his wife brought to his attention the plight of children in Africa orphaned by the pandemic.

Same-sex relationships equal incestuous and pedophiliac abuses. Equal protection under the law for lesbian and gay American citizens isn’t the same thing as civil rights. The lives and deaths of gay men are less important than those of children or orphans.

The sad reality is that American gay men and lesbians have heard it all before.

But we didn’t expect to have such values and ideals validated by this President-Elect at this Inauguration.

Warren’s stated beliefs make it clear that – when he invokes God at the Inauguration – it is not the inclusive and all-loving God who is recognized and worshiped by lesbian and gay men of faith in this country. With an entire world of spiritual leaders at his beck and call for this historic event, Obama can and should do better.

The message for American gay men and lesbians in the choice of Rick Warren is that – once again – “everyone” means everyone but us.

    • This boggles my mind. Would he “include” a white supremacist in the name of diversity, or would that be a betrayal of his black constituents? This is Bush-style religious pandering; it’s certainly not “change”.

    • Did anyone think that Obama would be anything but a politician? This does not shock me. America’s history of oppression and death is the worst in the entire world. Some things never change.

    • Yeah, Rick Warren is an asshole. (this is NEWS?) Obama has to include everyone if he is to get both sides to wrk together. I don’t like the son-of-a-bitch any better than anyone else, but to be “surprized” by things like this is no only naive, it is disingenuous.

In order for Obama to be POTUS, he has to be EVERYONE’S POTUS. Get over it, and work for what we deserve, or we don’t deserve it.

    • Actions speak louder than words. At least we know where we stand with obama and what we can expect from him.

    • That’s the problem with us liberals … we’re too NICE. It’s in our NATURE to make compromises and build coalitions.

The (Ir)religious Reich, OTOH, isn’t at ALL apologetic when they go for the jugular vein. Prop Hate would have probably FAILED if it weren’t for their last-minute blitz of out-and-out LIES in their ads.

The choice of Warren doesn’t just offend the LGBTQA community; it’s also a slap in the face to everyone who supports a woman’s right to choose. Warren has equated abortion with the Holocaust.

Warren has also equated marriage equality with incest and paedophilia. There’s NO way to spin THAT.

      no thanks to Rick Warren

    • I am more than surprised by the indignation some are feeling, because Obama’s views on gay marriage are the same as Rick Warren’s. Why the outrage? And more importantly why now? Obama threw gay people under the bus more than once during his campaign, the latest and most egregious example being his indifference to our fight against prop 8. All those fierce almost rabid LGBT Obama supporters who didn’t give a rats behind about his lack of support for them need to shut the hell up and fall in line like the good little Obama soldiers they are.

    • Amusing….. by our own in-fighting, we are doing the work FOR the right wing. THEY are OUR terrorists…. all they have to do is threaten, and we start fighting amongst ourselves, thereby diverting our attentions FROM the problem.

If you want to fight, fight THEM. I don’t give a flying f*ck WHO Obama has lead the invocation at his inauguration. ANYONE who is in the mainstream that would be considered for the job, would be against US. FIGHT the right, not us.

    • “In order for Obama to be POTUS, he has to be EVERYONE’S POTUS.”

Oh, absolutely. And I’m sure he’s going to sit down with leaders from the Ku Klux Klan any day now.

He will be President to all Americans, but that doesn’t mean he has to play all sides at once. It means he has to stand up for what is right and do what is necessary to make America a better country. Instead he is playing to the religious right, campaigning for re-election already.

Whether or not he personally shares the same views as Rick Warren I don’t know, but this is a politically sound move. He is America’s first “black” President. As such, he is expected to be a champion of civil rights for black Americans and, perhaps, other ethnic minorities. He can’t afford to alienate the majority further by doing what’s right and standing up for other minority groups.

The man is a politician, pure and simple, and he knows how to play the political game. He wants to be elected for a second term, and frankly I don’t think he gives a crap who he has to walk over to get there.

“The man is a politician, pure and simple, and he knows how to play the political game. He wants to be elected for a second term, and frankly I don’t think he gives a crap who he has to walk over to get there.”

I would tend to agree with that statement, the obvious thing to do then, is to fight against the hatred and bigotry of the right. MAKE Obama side with us. Make it blatantly obvious how insidious and disgusting the right is.

It is my experience that most straight people are just ignorant (many are stupid too, but most are just ignorant) The way around ignorance is education. We need to stop fighting ourselves and start educating the ingorant (the stupid are hopeless, because, as Ron White would say “You can’t fix stupid”)

IF we are to gain marriage equality, I can almost guarantee that it won’t be in his first term in office. He will have to be elected for his second term before THAT is even looked at.

If he were to sign marriage equality into law in his first term, it would doom his chances at a second. No I don’t like it, but it is reality AND the way the political game is played.

Fight the Right…. THEY are the enemy.

That’s it! We need to start working on getting him elected for a second term because he’s been so good for us so far.
