There are over 1.5 million gay teenagers who are experiencing a slow motion nervous breakdown this evening – and many of these teenagers may be sitting in their parents’ homes tonight listening to the vice presidential nomination speech by Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
What will be the message behind her choice of words and phrases this evening – genuine love, understanding and respect, or hostility, prejudice and misunderstanding?Will she fly the “family values” flag of the Religious Right? Will she stand on the shrill and divisive “gay marriage” foundation of James Dobson and Tony Perkins? And will she stand on Sean Hannity’s “traditional value” of allowing deep-seated hostility and prejudice toward gays and lesbians to be passed along to yet another generation?
But there is a much more important question as it relates to the gay or lesbian teenager who without friends or family is anticipating ending his or her life out of despair. For all those who seek an end to a national moral failing, the question for us is: Will we begin to question and therefore expose this horrible hypocrisy?
The gay teenager’s despair and emotional trauma is not because God created them without affection for the opposite sex – it’s because society says they should be rejected, condemned and deemed unworthy, inferior or immoral because of the way God created them.
For far too many years, groups like Dobson’s Focus on the Family and Perkins’ Family Research Council have used words and phrases that on the surface appear innocuous and somewhat meaningless, but upon basic scrutiny reveal hostility and prejudice toward gay and lesbian citizens.
Could there be a worse form of hypocrisy for Palin than doing harm in the name of religion – and particular the evangelical community which professes the Christian ideals of respect, love and understanding?
All of us – private citizens, public officials and the media – must do a better job as caretakers of the words and phrases that are used to communicate issues and positions related to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens.
We hope that Gov. Palin will choose not to use the anti-gay establishment’s code language. But if she does, we urge you to hold Gov. Palin accountable for her use of these words and phrases. It only takes but a few simple follow-up questions to expose the true intent behind these words and phrases – and please, take my word as a former anti-gay Christian Right voter, the intent is not love, understanding, compassion and respect.

Trace, give your hate filled head a shake. Obama said in is address that the Dems and Repubs may not agree on gay rights but surely they can come to a compromise so that gay and lesbians can be protected… What do you think would happen if he came right out and said he was for gay marriage? You personally might be happy to hear him say that but it would be the death of the Democrats chances of gaining the Whitehouse. It’s a “one step at a time” issue. Obama’s words tell me that he does not hold the same opinion as the Republicans on the gay issue and that he supports gays. Do you think America is ready to accept gay marriage when they can’t even accept a gay in the military or protect a gay from being fired in 36 states? Gay Americans are going to have to understand that it is goingto take time to win the rights they deserve. I’m not saying that’s right, I’m just saying that’s reality.
I think if Palin want’s to be so rightous in her family values that she should think about her daughter getting pregnant while she was not married and now when Palin becomes VP her daughter will be getting married to the man that got her pregnant which is wrong for us to pay for daughter’s wedding when Palin expects everyone to regard family values and yet if the Gay Community wants rights and nobody wants that then why should we put Palin in office of the VP if she was pregnant prior to accepting the VP nomination and none of the Canidates believe that Gays should have the same rights as a man and women have, we can vote, we can pay taxes and we can live, But we can not serve in the Military and we can’t get married. I think this election is going no where, the only time canidates need our support and help is to be elected and then the canidates forget about us their whole term until the next election when they need our support.
Just like people on Disability and fixed income, the canidates forget us when it comes to stimulus packages and income increases and rights, but they have a great memory when it is election time and then they need our votes to remain in office, I refuse to vote as long as gays have no rights as a couple and the canidates forget us as low income or fixed income and yet we can’t afford food and to pay our bills because our elected officals forget about us 99% of the time, they have great memories around election time. So around election time I forget about them and vote for people who do remember us during their term and that is how I vote, I forget you when you forget me during your term in office, when you remember us full term and you deserve it then I will remember your office is up for election, HELP ME I HELP YOU, fair is Fair
Kids today have it so easy its criminal. What do they do but text message and play xbox. They cant even talk in a social setting, except for, LIKE and YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN. We build super expensive schools for these honor students, what do they care. You do your work on a computer ND PRINT OUT AND HAND IN. rEAL; BALLBUSTING WORK.
As for challenges they face, if they werent such smart asses maybe they’d be left alone. Quit acting like a nancy girl all the time and be a real man. Even gay a guy can be a guy. Iwas lucky and never got picked on or beatup, yet everyone in my school knew i was gay. Imade friends and had fun with one of the cutest guys you could imagine. All this in a small Ohio town in the 70’s. Todays youth have no originality or social skills and mom and pop wonder at this as they work 2 jobs to get them the latest carjacking video game Reality is a plastic toy from last weeks hit movie. And earrings for infants. Materialistic, of course, and they’ll get gy just fine.
Perhaps I’m too removed from the moment but I thought including some of these phrases would have made this article just complete, informative. I support your perspective, but you assume that all readers know what phrases and words are used in the GOP’s rhectoric. Sadly, that’s simply not the case. And nothing Gov. Palin made me warm and fuzzy. Her lies about- ‘the ‘bridge to nowhere’ but we kept the money and now are building another bridge elsewhere; I’ll persecute my brother-in-law even after he’s already been officially reprimanded a year ago; I fired dept heads who didn’t support my election campaign and call it team building and loyalty testing; L fired a librarian who didn’t agree with my book banning inquiry; were too glaring for me to hear anything else. There is no way I could suspect she’s gay-supportive, much less pro-gay. Her church is strongly anti-gay and she’s deeply rooted in their ‘Dominion prophecy” agenda.
