Congratulations, John & Mark!

I think the four paragraphs in your article that begin with "I'm grateful for..." contain golden advice for making a relationship work. Actually, it really comes down to simply always being grateful for your partner.

John and Mark, why wait until Michigan allows you to buy a marriage license to get married? You might have a long wait, unfortunately. Go ahead and have a beautiful wedding officiated by whatever type of officiant conforms to your beliefs, invite everyone you want, register at your favorite store, exchange vows and rings, and have a nice reception! Call it wedding (not a "commitment ceremony" or something else) and from then on, call yourselves married and call each other your husband. I believe that we have to use the same traditons and terms that mainstream society uses, because they can relate to that, and it's essential if we ever hope for our marriages to be treated equally.

My husband and I did this over three years ago, and it was the greatest day of my life and the smartest money I've ever spent. In many hard-to-describe ways, it increased the value we place in our own relationship, and everyone else knows what our relationship is and treats us that way.

Best of all, we have an anniversary date! (Well, we still have two, because we got legally married in Canada five days later.) We still remember the date we met, the date we officially started dating, and the date we got engaged, but we mark time from the date of our wedding.

My husband and I have been married in our hearts since 10/11/96 and "legally" in California since 06/27/08

Even after all these years of being together, almost 12, I was still crying at our ceremony when we declared our vows to each other.

Congratulations, John and Mark.

My partner and I have been together 9 years. And I think all of us who've stuck together for years understand exactly what you are saying. It's not always easy, but it's always INCREDIBLE!

Congratulations John and Mark! My partner and I celebrated our seventh anniversary this past summer by going to San Francisco and getting married. I love hearing stories about happy gay couples, because the more stories we share, the more we become part of the fabric of the human story.

I've been with my partner 30 years next year -- I agree the secrets to longevity are giving each other space, and (for us) lots of sex -- with other people. The best thing for me was to find a dependable friend and someone who shared my values. Money is always the biggest issue you have to deal with (as far as disagreements) for most people I think. I never wanted a relationship, which is why I think we stayed together -- like you said "low expectations" and good things happen.

I wish to congratulate all of you too. It's so great to have a love of your life.I've been with Phil for 32 yrs. this Oct. Like you guys I can't conceive of life without him. This man has been therre for me through all my lossesand has stuck with me in my declining health. He does my medical requirements which sometimes can be disgusting and never flinches from his duty. God I love him so much it hurts. I have diabetes and have lost a leg due to infection and this dude takes excellent care of me. We met at work, Iwas going down the escalator with a friend, he was pushing a great big dust broom and he was just so cute it killed me. We just grinned and I knew I had my man . See how ridiculous meeting your future can be. Unexpected. Fate{he says BOLOGNA} I became good friends with his group and he fit in with mine. We became bestbuds almost immediately. We were togetghr constantly and still are today. I molested him in my car after he passed out after a nite of excessive drinking. I was hooked. You know you're in love when making love makes you shiver and shy. He told me to not say anything about sex, but I've never listened to him. Or him to me. Our worst row was over how to hook up the DVR to the other 2 tv's. I threw an ashtray at him and almost hit Maggie, our beagle who came to us as a stray 12 yrs. ago. She is my best friend and our baby now. Although I wish I could have his babies. We're just two old, balding fat dudes who love with a passion I hope all couples have. I'm 54, he's 52. We like sports and silly comedies. Like most Americans we watch way too much of the idiot box. It's hard to think of things to tell ya, we have a very long life of adventures. Anyway, our love to all of you out there. If you're not hooked up yet and someone is waiting on you to make up your mind, hurry up and put there hearts at ease. Best wishes and we hope you have as good a life as we do. Love, Phil and Doug. Peace

Congratulations! And if I might say, despite the christian right's insistence, there is a bible verse that describes how you and your partner work so well together. It's not in a 'one man and one woman way', it's that 'As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another'.

Best wishes, from a gay man raised as a christian, and much thanks to you for being a role model that morality - and with it even spirituality - can go hand in hand with homosexuality, despite what some people may say.

Happy anniversary, John, from another coupe who just passed the 20 year mark, and got married last month.
Think you can convince Mark to let you run a pic so we can see the face of this treasure?
