What offended a lot of people about the last article you are talking about here is that you made jokes about the protests and told people to get high off alcohol and to get over themselves if they didn't find the same humor in it as you did.

See, you made light of an issue that is very serious to a lot of gay people because you aren't in the same place as many other gay people are, so for you it is something to joke about and make light of, but for other gay people it was and is not.

People's lives are seriously affected by stuff like this, for being gay. It's not a joke to them like it is for you and your article showed that you are disconnected from this realization or at least the seriousness of it.

How about an actual apology instead banging the drum of "I'm a victim, too..I've shed blood and I've marched in the streets and blah blah blah blah blah"...that's a distraction, Corvino; a sophist's sleight of hand.

Brian said: Perhaps, if I and several gay friends opened an “Ex-Straight” ministry, the brainwashed right would finally begin to see their concept of “choice” and “change” for the embarrassing waste of time it has always been..... Sorry Brian that has already been done for almost thousands of years. It is called the Roman Catholic Priesthood. Many people there will be glad to discuss just how 'well' it has worked to the worlds advantage.... or not.

My apologies for two unfortunate typos in my post yesterday:

1. "and at this point I don't Corvino..." should have been "and at this point I don't trust that Corvino..."

2. "Lines that could have been written Jack MacFarland" should have been "Lines that could have been written for Jack MacFarland."

We all makes mistakes, and wise people convert them into an engine for learning and improvement.

Of course I was being sarcastic. Sorry. I forget how hard it can be to convey eye-rolling in writing.

I think the time of being mim-mouthed about being gay is over. I have been here and queer for decades and, yes, family and others have beat feet out of my life. Goodbye, goodbye: losses are difficult but not insurmountable, not as devastating as they are meant to be, and are freeing in unexpected ways. Friendship that isn't friendly isn't friendship.

I used to be more generous and tolerant about closet-dwellers but I am pretty much over that. Trying to speak to someone through a door is conversation-distorting and harder than I want to work. So, stay in your closet and stop counting on me for anything approaching friendship. Less tolerant, see?

Oh, yes, and get here now. Stand up now. You didn't choose this battle? Well, it is choosing you. Sometimes the only way to get heard is to be angry and vocal about it.

I don't know what was funnier, the wit of the commentary in question or the thought that it was a "clumsy piece."

It was well written and thought provoking, two things that invoke varied levels of criticism.

It is often easier to play the role of critic, than it is that of creator. When considering your audience, remember that public forums like these tend to birth more of the former.

John, you're right to state that the US is not post-gay. I'm an American living in the UK because the US refuses to recognise my Canadian marriage to a British woman. If anyone wants to see a post-gay society move to the UK, or most anywhere in Europe. Even traditionally strong Catholic countries like Spain recognise the validity of same sex marriages. The US is far from being post-gay, and my wife is reluctant to ever come there as a result. Keep up the work John, and maybe one day it will be so.

Personally speaking, it's gonna take me a long time to get the unpleasant taste of the column before last out of my mouth. Yes, Prop 8 (etc.) proves we are not there yet, and we have much work to do. At this crucial and sensitive time, with much work to do, all across the country, I personally prefer those who "work smart" (as well as hard) over those who put our current momentum at risk because they are blithely stating (and I deduce not deeply questioning) theories such as "a sense of humor is needed to carry us through the fight ahead." Huh? Is that so? There's a time and a place for humor, and at this point I don't Corvino has developed sufficient discernment to know when it is and isn't cool. Or what kind of humor may or may not appropriate. Lines that could have been written Jack MacFarland, as in the previous column, are just not appropriate when we've just had a moment that is very much equivalent to Rosa Parks finally refusing to go to the back of the bus.

To carry that analogy further, the propriety and sensitivity of an otherwise sympathetic person hanging out in Montgomery around that time and cracking jokes -- a self-appointed jester ("oh, we need humor to carry us through!") -- would be questioned. If his humor comprised Amos 'n' Andy routines, that would be even more questionable. I'd want to say to him, "Brother, we appreciate your wanting to contribute. But make sure your contributions really are contributions, not something that actually hurts us."
