Oh, Serrellac… this is about distinction, making distinctions about who matters and who doesn’t. I don’t claim to have the answers, but you and your ilk seem more than willing to put responsibility on the shoulders of talking heads. I, for one, never heard of either Perez Hilton OR this Miss USA contestant before this whole flap began. And I don’t care what either of them think about my rights or the rights of anyone else. Why? Because they’re talking heads! It is within the boundaries of each of our personal choices whether to become offended or take other people’s opinions as gospel. I choose not to. I choose not to give these people power. You obviously do. This is what I am referring to when I say that the gay community needs to grow up; there are people in actual positions of actual power who influence how we live our lives. Neither P. Hilton NOR Ms. Prejean are in such a position unless you and the people like you GIVE them such power.

I see, so since we’ve been having this debate since the 70’s we should shut up now?
Because we’ve succeeded so demonstrably?
We should only offer OUR opinions of someone else’s opinion…when?
Give us a guideline from your sack of higher perspective.
Only if someone directly connected with the government tells the country that we’re second class citizens–THEN we get to respond without being stupid?
Would that be ANYONE directly connected with the government, or is there a specific hiring grade at which we can engage? Say, an Alderman wouldn’t count, but a State House rep does?
The Director of your local housing commission doesn’t count, but his/her boss does?
But, if some slug in a restaurant tells my husband and I that we’re crap citizens, we shouldn’t correct him because, after all, we’ve been having this debate for 40 years…so what’s the point of continuing with it, yeah?
Perhaps if you were to publish a ratified guideline on just who the gay community is allowed to engage when being dissed nationally it would help the rest of us not to be so stupid.

Um… unless I totally missed the point of Corvino’s post, it’s that this isn’t a thing to get one’s panties in a bunch over. Opinions are like anuses; everyone has one and they usually stink. This battle between whoever this Perez Hilton bitch is and some Miss USA contestant is like watching a real-life edition of “Celebrity Deathmatch.” Who cares? Who is affected by either person’s OPINION, in the long run? Last time I checked, no one with the surname of Hilton is in national politics and Miss USA contestants don’t generally influence anyone outside of the pageant circuit. So we have a debate going on about gay marriage. Newsflash! It’s been going on in the public eye in this country since at least the 70s and the idea that it’s going to be settled over an effing Miss USA contest is absurd. Yeah. The gay community needs to grow up. In a whole freaking LOT of ways…

I KNOW their viewpoint. That’s the POINT. If you don’t understand their viewpoint by now, there’s something inherently WRONG with your abilities of perception.
I’m going to NO LONGER put up with their bullshit and their violence and their hate.
I don’t give a [CRAP] what they think; what their opinions are or how they FEEEEEEEEL.
I DEMAND respect and EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW.
I don’t HAVE to change their minds. All I have to do is to tell them they are WRONG when they open their stupid mouths on national television. All I have to do is use every means at my disposal to FORCE the Federal Government to ENFORCE the 14th Amendment which GUARANTEES me, as a citizen of the United States, EQUAL TREATMENT UNDER THE LAW.
I will NOT be silent when ANYONE says this [crap]. I will NOT tolerate it. I will NOT accept it.

I would like to bring up that I don’t think Mr. Hilton’s comment was televised.
Unlike the beauty queen’s.
Once again, Mr. Corvino, your apologia overcomes you.
You are equating an, in my opinion, accurate opinion which was NOT given on national television with the same ol’ shit OPINION of an ignorant girl which WAS given on national television.
Please stop writing for this site.
Join the Log Cabin Republicans, or better yet, Focus on the Family, and STOP presenting yourself as a representative view of the gay community.
Few of us would even consider having a polite conversation with ANYONE from the hate group Focus on the Family, let alone keep piling on this apologia to them and for them.

Perez Hilton is an ugly misfit and his question was a poor choice at a straight beauty queen show. Who cares what a beautiful straight woman thinks about gay marriage? I do. Because as long as she has the right to express her opinion, I have the right to express mine. The gay community needs to swallow its anger and grow up, act like gentlemen and adults when addressing the moral majority if asking them for acceptance. Or forget acceptance, foment more rage and fear at gays, and derail a safer future. Grow up, gay America.

Perez Hilton is annoying, that’s a fact for most people.

And for the analogy about Iraq and their religious beliefs, let’s point out the obvious difference between the Iraq situation and the pageant. Miss Runner-Up didn’t call for everyone to kill gays. And in Iraq, people get their lives taken away, but in the U.S. gays have it pretty good for the most part. I am not saying everything’s coming up sunshine, but when you look at everything else in the world you have to think how lucky we are.

And when did anyone care what Miss USA truly stands for, I for one don’t. I don’t remember anyone who does, at least not in my generation.

The only thing that’s come out of this whole thing is the religious conservatives have been given a target to point their fingers at. I think Perez has had a detrimental effect on the gay rights movement. Though he isn’t the representative for the gays, not everyone will see that. People who aren’t rational will see him as what gays are further solidifying their own narrow beliefs.

And Myke I am sorry, but anyone who fought the for gay rights in the 70s or the 80s had to be more articulate than Perez Hilton. The “big mouthed queens” of the past got together and put on demonstrations, fought legal battles and protected the rights of gays. All Perez Hitlon did was just yell and called names like a child. He didn’t bring the same-sex marriage debate back on the table, because last time I checked the news it was still on the table, he gave some people more reason to hate gays. If there was anyone using their gayness as an agenda to further themselves in the world it would be Perez.

And I doubt John needs to use his gayness for his agenda. There are many successful gay rights advocates, philosophers, debaters, who are straight..

So Rush Limbaugh, an unpopular personality from the right, gets called the leader of the republican party. In return, NOM picks this up and names Perez, a popular celebrity blogger as the face of the gay marriage movement. And as a result people are outraged like they were with Rush.

How original yet incredible stupid. This morNOM group should be careful because as it is they have no support from the youth. Making it a Perez issue, or even better, a Hollywood issue in general is going to turn it into a generational issue even more and eventually come back and bite them where the sun don’t shine.

Cool and new VS. old and grumpy. Mmmmmmh.
