Besen: The globalization of gay bashing
The latest alleged anti-gay terrorism in Iraq is gluing shut the anuses of homosexuals, while forcing the victims to ingest a form of Ex-Lax. The special glue can only be removed by surgery – thus often leading to a painful death.
It is challenging to know if such information is accurate. But, confirming the latest form of torture is beside the point, really. What we do know is that the news from overseas is rarely encouraging. For example, in March “tens of thousands” of people from Burundi demonstrated to outlaw homosexuality. This destitute nation is the kind of place that you may have seen in late night infomercials where flies buzz around the lips of starving children. Eighty percent of Burundi’s population lives in poverty. Famines and food shortages have occurred and the World Food Program reports that 56.8-percent of children under age five suffer from chronic malnutrition. Yet, the good citizens of Burundi have time to chant and hold signs demanding the imprisonment of homosexuals.
Back to Iraq – our tax dollars are now overseeing the wanton murder of gay Iraqis. The New York Times reported this month that “the bodies of 25 boys and men suspected of being gay have turned up in the huge Shiite enclave of Sadr City…”
In Nigeria, lawmakers are debating a bill that would imprison gay people who live together and jail anyone who doesn’t rat out the gay couples. In July 2008, London’s Independent wrote a story about a 26-year-old gay man in Turkey, Ahmet Yildiz, saying that his own family may have killed him. “They wanted him to see a doctor who could cure him, and get married,” a friend explained.
Box Turtle Bulletin reported that a Ugandan newspaper this week published an article under the banner headline, “Top Homos In Uganda Named.” This outrage – that jeopardizes the lives of gay people – follows a recent anti-gay conference in Uganda featuring a board member from the American “ex-gay” organization Exodus International.
In Moscow, mayor Yuri Luzhkov has rejected calls for a gay pride march to be held during an upcoming European music festival. He has called pride parades, “gay propaganda” and “satanic acts”, according to the New York Times.
What we are seeing in front of our eyes is the globalization of gay bashing. The United States has exported marketing techniques and church structures to culturally homophobic countries. The sexual minorities caught in these nations do not have the same freedoms that we enjoy in the west, so they can’t fight back. They are essentially voiceless and fearful – allowing insidious myths and stereotypes to go unchallenged. With gay people effectively demonized and hatred promoted by civic and religious leaders, hysteria on gay issues ensues.
“U.S. religious right sponsored programs blossomed under the Bush administration,” explained Christina Engela of the GLBT group SAGLAAD in South Africa, noting the rise of such groups in her country. “Suddenly these people are using us as scapegoats to unite and build their power bases.”
Unfortunately, the GLBT community is not currently up to meeting the new global challenges. Passive and overly cautious bureaucrats staff some of our leading human rights organizations. They are good at reporting violence, but not very effective at countering it.
Even more disturbing, they sometimes serve as apologists in the name of cultural and religious sensitivity. Exhibit A is Scott Long, director of the GLBT program at Human Rights Watch. In the publication “Contemporary Politics” he lashed out at some of the world’s top gay activists and chided them for demanding that Muslims actually respect the right of GLBT people to exist.
“The incessant insistence that Muslim communities accede to the political agenda of LGBT identities actually forecloses politics altogether,” Long wrote. “It fences off the arena of shared interests….”
So, in other words, GLBT people should put their human rights on the backburner to assuage the grievances of religious people. We should also not act on our own behalf until all of the world’s problems are solved.
Fortunately, there are a growing number of GLBT activists who will no longer allow culture, history or religion to be employed as a rationalization for homophobia. We do not believe that a state’s sovereignty enables it to brutalize and marginalize gay people within its borders.
The world is shrinking even faster than our community’s leadership on global issues. It is time for groups, such as Human Rights Watch, to show us their comprehensive strategy for creating a new paradigm. The bloody status quo has brought us few victories and an abundance of ruddy reports that shock the senses. Many of us are tired of the elitist sophistry that tells us the world is too sophisticated to take action.
In the absence of leadership, there are those who will fill the vacuum – as some of us have done in our efforts to boycott Jamaica. But, the tired excuses from human rights groups have got to end. An unmistakable message must be sent that there is a steep price to pay for homophobia.

The approach for both organzations is the same. That is what is so upsetting. None of the national organization take the offense when confronted with the challenges that we meet on a daily basis.
I get emails from the three that I belong to asking for a “contribution” so they can continue the “fight.” I have consistantly asked, “what are you doing? What are the specific programs in which you are engaged?” I have yet to get a response other than “contribute.” It is the old “we are out there fighting for you – send more money.” NOT.
My partner has a degree from BIOLA (that reads: Bible Institute of Los Angeles) and he can list a dozen questions that challenges the lies spouted by the conservative religious right. His main question is: “why do our leaders not challenge these lies and misquotes?”
Are we not supposed to know what our contributions are accomplishing? And I don’t want to hear that we are supporting apple pie and motherhood!
I watched the hate and evilness that my mother, a lesbian, with which she had to content most of her life. And what I see today doesn’t seem to have changed much except for the outward trappings. Rage? Pissed off? You have no idea!
Let’s not forget that the Human Rights Watch, back in 2004, endorsed neo-conservative Republican Rep. Mary Bono – who voted with George W. Bush 94% of the time – over left-wing Democratic challenger, David Roth, who supported gay marriage (Bono opposed gay marriage!). Human Rights Watch has always had a abysmal record as a tolerator and perpetrator of homophobia and homophobic politicians. They do not possess the least amount shame about this fact either. They often endorse Republicans in elections, over liberal Democrats, as with Bono, for the simple reason that they are favored to win in that district. It’s hard to believe but this is absolutely true. They like to bet on “winning horses.”
Johnathan has an interesting idea. But instead of sending money for food overseas, what if we had an organization that sponsored refugees of conscience to bring them here? No doubt that the glbt folks in other countries are some of their best and brightest. So why not benefit from their talents?
The article refers to Human Rights Watch, which is different from Human Rights Campaign (HRC).
This is a great article that should remind all of us that the work for GLBT rights is only beginning.
Yes we all like this one. NO HRC and Human Rights Watch are NOT THE SAME. Act the same maybe, slow moving gentrified.
We need to ramp up our EXPORTS of ‘good gay stuff’ to counter that junk. How about a huge tour of gay affirming perfomers, gay and straight mixed, international??
Of course, the video will be out ASAP to spread easier even.
One of the most well written articles I’ve ever read.
Yes, what Jonathan said.
R&R mentions the HRC, but I have read the article 4 or 5 times but only see the Human Rights Watch mentioned. Is Human Rights Watch and HRC the same? I didn’t think so. Perhaps someone can enlighten me? R&R?
Perhaps GLBT folk should develop their own organizations that collect money to support food distribution to 3rd world countries, in the hopes that we can demonstrate that we don’t only focus on our own interests. Church organizations thrive by not only focusing on their own ideology, but also by providing benefit to the more fragile of humanity. Emulating the latter behavior may contribute to building good will for all gay people around the world.
Pissed? That doesn’t even begin to cover the rage. I remember very well the days when you were warned to not touch anyone else in a gay bar because that “someone” else could be a vice officer and you would be subjected to being arrested for soliciting – just touching! Today we can touch but what else do we have? Not much. Oh we can parade up and down main streets dressed or not dressed while waving rainbow flags. But what financial benefits do we have at the federal level or in most of the states? Little or nothing.
We are stilled drummed out of the military. I was within two months of being booted out of the Navy because someone accused me of being a “faggot.” If I was not due to be discharged I was told I would be dishonorably discharged for being a homosexual and as such a threat to the security of this county.
Even in the states where marriage is allowed it is only valid in the state where the marriage took place.
When will our community awaken to the fact that the Taliban Religious right is well organized and has declared war on us?? And our organization do what? Collect money and talk nice. The religious conservative are also collecting money but they are not talking nice. They lie and support those lies by misquoting scripture. And we answer those lies by doing what? Nothing!! Maybe if we all join hands and sing Kumbaya things will get better, right?
I’m not suggesting that we burn down the churches, temples, and any other “place of worship” but I am suggesting that we need to confront their lies loudly and clearly and in the media!! For example, demand that they point to the specific place in the Bible where it is specfically stated that marriage is between a man and a women – NO extrapolating! If you are going to take scripture literally then you cannot extrapolate.
But this is to no avail since our “leaders” want to talk nice and not offend our enemies. I suggest that our enemies pull their lower lip over their heads and swallow.
I wrote the HRC head of the time about 4 years ago, cancelling my membership due to the announcing of their religious outreach program. I emplored them to not reach out to evil religion but to fight it.
I told them this would only lead to us saying we should respect religious based intolerance, witnessed here in Mr. Besen’s quote of their current outreach leader.
Reaching out to religion, telling parents how to “deal” with a gay son amidst religious intolerance, allowing that muslim or any other cultural/religious traditions are ok when they aim hate at gays is admitting there is something wrong with us.
I totally agree with Mr. Besen’s sentiment that we should demand a high price of homophobia.
I just had a letter printed in our local paper in response to a letter emploring us to return to God’s ways amidst “homosexuality, murder, drug abuse, prostitution, abortion and infidelity”.
Someone actually printed his religious bigotry equating us to murderers!
The response to my letter has been horrific….many, many people defend the notion that it is ok to hate and bash gays because their religion tells them so.
This is not acceptable and we should have a very firm line across which all out war is the norm.
Bravo!
I don’t know how much more angry this article could make me, but I think the gay community really needs to work on gathering this information we have, and getting others to listen and get as pissed as us.
Us homo’s already know were being screwed, how do we show everyone else that were being screwed, and that by screwing us, there only screwing themselves as well?
Wayne – wonderful article, as always. It never ceases to amaze me what a force for hatred, fear, death and destruction organized religion has become in this world. So few people have the courage to stand up and do what it right, and your writings, at least make people aware of what is going on – at that is an invaluable effort.
I totally agree with the comments regarding the pussy whipped leaders of HRC. They will get NO more of my money. I will wait until we have an organization that has the balls to stand up and take the offensive. I suspect the HRC’s approach to dealing with Adolph Hitler would be: “let’s sit down and have and nice cup of tea and chit chat about our problems.”
