Besen: Obama’s evangelical problem
George W. Bush longed to escape his daddy’s shadow, while Barack Obama has turned to shadowy preachers in his long search for a father figure. His filial approach to faith began with Rev. Jeremiah Wright and has now taken a sharp turn right.
The New York Times reports that the president has surrounded himself with a cadre of clerical crackpots known as the “Circle of Five.” These holy men are: Rev. Joel Hunter, former head of the Christian Coalition; anti-gay Bishop T.D. Jakes; the ex-gay loving Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell; and Jim “waffling” Wallis, a protean progressive. The only Obama shaman who isn’t shameless is the civil rights era preacher Rev. Otis Moss Jr.
Rev. Jakes refers to homosexuality as “brokenness” and has claimed that he wouldn’t hire a sexually active gay person. But it seems T.D. can’t even keep his own son off the D.L. (down low). His “sexually broken” heir was arrested earlier this year for cruising a Dallas Park in search of gay men.
Wallis, the chief executive of Sojourners, a Christian magazine, holds “traditional” views on homosexuality and abortion, according to the Times article. Although Wallis has taken some affirmative steps on GLBT equality, he prides himself on not being a part of “the religious left.”
Rev. Caldwell has endorsed Metanoia, an ex-gay ministry designed to “help homosexuals understand with God’s help that ‘change [is] possible.” When the GLBT community worked to elect Obama, this is not what we thought he meant when he promised “change.”
“Whoa, OK, so let’s assume [the Obama Administration decides to release] a mealy mouthed message like ‘the President does not believe in ex-gay therapy’ or some such nonsense,” wrote blogger Pam Spaulding. “If he doesn’t, then what is he doing talking to Caldwell when there are plenty of other prominent pastors he could choose to break bread with who don’t subscribe to that view?”
We must also remember that during his campaign, Obama tapped “ex-gay” gospel singer Donnie McClurkin to croon at a concert tour in South Carolina. And, this insult was compounded by the injury of selecting Rev. Rick Warren to give the Inauguration invocation.
I can live with Obama’s poor Sunday choices if on Monday he hears our voices and passes landmark gay civil rights legislation. Still, it is disconcerting that such a cool and rational leader keeps returning to the theological armpit to fill his pulpit. Will spending time in the biblical backwater influence Obama’s views and lead him to sell us down the river?
By embracing these conservative clerics, Obama is also setting a wretched example overseas. Last month, the State Department released a report to Congress that documents “an unfortunate crisis in human rights abuse directed against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people worldwide.” Much of this violence was the result of brutal religious oppression. Yet, Obama pals around with reprehensible reverends, thus undermining his own administration’s call for moderate religious leadership abroad.
The Pope, who takes his road show to Africa this week, could have used Obama’s absent leadership. In Nigeria, for example, lawmakers are debating a draconian law that would imprison gay people for living together. It encourages violent witch-hunts by requiring Nigerians to turn in their gay neighbors. Those who don’t rat out gays could be jailed for up to five years.
The BBC reports that during a debate on this unconscionable legislation, Rev. Patrick Alumake told the National Assembly that the top leaders of the Catholic Church in Nigeria supported the measure.
“There are wild, weird ways of life that are affecting our own culture very negatively, we have people who either by way of the media or traveling around the world have allowed new ideas which are harmful to our nation and our belief,” said Alumake.
Catholicism is also the largest religion in Uganda. There, the penalty for homosexuality is life in prison. Last week, American anti-gay leaders held a conference in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, where a local group leader pledged to “wipe out” homosexuality.
If he chose, the Pope could have a significant impact this week by urging African Catholics to stop persecuting homosexuals. But, we know this won’t happen. After all, we are talking about a Vatican that dispatched its minions to Albany, New York last week to fight against a bill to temporarily lift the statute of limitations for lawsuits alleging the sexual abuse of children. If the Pope won’t protect innocent youths, he certainly won’t lift a gold ringed finger to save the lives of people he considers “objectively disordered.”
While there will be no moral leadership from this Pontiff, we expect Obama to understand that his clerical choices do matter. It is time Obama stops searching for Daddy and becomes the man of the (White) house, by picking preachers who are not at irreconcilable odds with his human rights policies.

But those of us who bitched about his silence in California and the Black community about our issues were called names and told to shut up. Well, I am so glad that Obama is on our side.
That’s true, Frankly. Including Besen, who’d scream, “How dare you criticize Democrats!”
And hands up of those who believe McCain would have been more pro-gay? Or Hillary The-Defense-of-Marriage-Act Clinton??
Wow. I never thought I’d see an article this critical of Obama (on a progressive site) in my lifetime.
I can only imagine the amount of hate mail Mr. Besen will soon be receiving.
I don’t see how having a certain group of people around you automatically means you share their views. Obama has been very pro-gay, and I can’t see these people changing his view on that. In fact, I think it’s more likely that the ministers might soften or even reverse their views through working with Obama. I think it’s wrong to expect that someone who is anti-gay should automatically be precluded from Obama’s circle of associates or advisors. Obama has made it clear all along that he welcomes input from people with diverse views.
You err when you criticize Reverend Wright. Jeremiah Wright is not antigay; he has many times spoken very forcefully and very supportively in favor of gay people’s full inclusion in our country and its religious institutions. That is why you will never hear me say one bad thing about Jeremiah Wright: because he’s never said anything bad about me.
Now lets not get it twisted everyone the only thing that change in the White House was the color. Our wishes have not some how come into a magic genie’s hand and they will all now be granted. We must continue to pursue, persuade, and preserver our collective rights as we have in the past. We must continue to fight for what is right and what is wrong will take care of it’s self.
I hate to do the “I told you so” dance….but, the music is playing really loud now and there are a lot more people finally joining me on the floor.
So, where was the KKK and the American Nazi Party ministers at this meeting? And still, Obama sycophants believe that Obama’s only motive is to reach out to extremists in a gesture of unification. Then I put it to you: Where was the “spiritual” arm of the KKK and the American Nazi Party at this meeting? Why weren’t all the hate groups represented?
Could it be that these religion-based hate-groups, as it only relates to us, is ok with Obama to embrace, and yet, where are those other groups who are personally offensive to him? Why are they not represented in the “spirit of inclusion“ and “as an out-reach to different points-of-view“?.
Obama is a f*cking manipulating, self-serving amateur. He stupidly signed off on TARP money for AIG knowing full well that the $168 million was in the works for so-called “retention rewards“, and yet he could have withheld the money until that was off the table. Now he invites our enemies to the White House who voted against him, yet he has ignored our civil rights leaders and the millions of us who vote for him. What an a**hole! He is weak and untrustworthy.
One term Obama. Sadly, but true. We need to start looking really hard for a third party alternative along with the millions of other disenfranchised Americans who are fed up with being used like a twenty dollar whore on election day and then tossed aside in disgust afterwards — that is, until the next election when they become “useful“ again.
Wake up people, I’m afraid this is only a hint of worse things to come from this clown.
And please (you know who you are) don’t run that silly-ass comparison game on us about McCain and Clinton and Bush and Satan and Darth Vader all being “worse” than Obama. That is like saying that at least one of the persons who raped you didn’t have bad breath so he wasn‘t quite as evil as the rest who participated in the gang bang.
Geez, grow a f*cking pair already! If this guys is an a**hole, call him out on it and stopping being such weak-minded Obama zombies. The campaign is over! Only result count now. Hold his feet to the fire. You owe it to your brothers and sisters in the GLBT community and you owe it to yourself.
Don’t be an enabler of bad behavior like an abused housewife who thinks she can‘t do any better than continue to live with an abuser who still brings her flowers after he knocks her teeth out. Demand respect or let them know that there will be consequences — especially on the next election day.

This latest revelation about Obama is cause for concern, added to his many failures already out there. Although Obama signed the UN declaration for decriminalizing homosexuality, this cost him little political capital. Big ticket items like DOMA, ENDA and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell will require Congressional action where Obama will have to put himself on the line. His opposition to our full civil equality, his campaign machinations, the Rick Warren affront and now this pack of reactionaries– none of it bodes well for gay rights.
Gay leaders made no demands on Obama and all of us are likely to get little in return. Equality will be won in the streets.
Brothers and Sisters, this is NOT the time to turn against each other or our allies. More than anyone else, we should understand “guilt by association” for the rubbish it truly is…
And let’s look at Obama as a human being: he came from a single-family home and didn’t have a father growing up. So he has issues, and fine it helps to understand that;
and we should continue to encourage the President to do the right thing, respectfully, and I believe we will prevail. After all, this President understands the difference between right and wrong, unlike the last seven or eight.
Did I sign onto an alternate version of 365gay? Is it possible Saint Obama is finally being called out for what many of us have said for months and months and months?
Face the facts boys and girls, Obama’s silence on gay issues is because he does not like us!
Even a good man, which we elected, can veer from our wishes. I agree with Besen wholeheartedly that kissing the asses of the religious right will not advance our plight and continue to endanger that “All men are created equal….”. Its Americas’ embarassment!
I worry about US, not the rest of the world tho they need our support. When a church in this country says “we welcome all into our fold….”, walk away. I have heard more hate preached and sermonized in my long lifetime from the pulpit that nauseates me. I think we need to pray for the churches who have perverted their own existence and created God in THEIR own images. Did anyone watch the California Supreme Court deliberation on PROP8? You can see it on C-SPAN.
Wow, Besen. The Obama administration is just about to sign a declaration by the UN to decriminalize homosexuality in the world. ,SOMETHING bUSH REFUSED TO DO. and all you can say about Obama is that He ‘ pals around with T. D jakes?. Guilty by assiciation. Looks like you are borrowing likes from Hannity. SHAME ON YOU MR BESEN!
Simply, Obama is not a friend of our community. We can only hope we can keep what little we have with this politician in the white house.
Well it does bring up areas of concern. Surronding yourself with such people could have influence. But we also have to remember that the president is more open minded than past leaders. But he is starting to steer close to Bill Clinton terrioty. But think about it. Obama needs to keep everything together. He is for nonpartisan politics. SO keep religious flunkies happy he might have these people around to say “Hey look you religious nut jobs. I still am your president.” But it would be more comfort if he would introduce more left-wing religious leaders to be more balanced.
