Besen: No more gay Republicans
Until now, I have always thought there was a place for the Log Cabin Republicans within the GLBT movement.
There was a need for a group that could advocate from inside the belly of the beast and do the dirty work that few intellectually honest people wanted to do. The logic behind this organization was that it made more sense to fight for the soul of the Republican Party than run away and support the Democrats — which members of this organization have traditionally disagreed with on fiscal and national security matters. However, the rationale for this organization has significantly eroded, as the GOP has shown itself to be corrupt, inept and incapable of good governance. It has become the party of cronyism, debt and diabolical deceit, while securing its power by enthusiastically pandering to its anti-gay base.
With the stock market plummeting, the real estate bubble bursting, the deficit exploding and gas prices breaking new records — largely thanks to Republican deregulation of markets and failure to explore alternative energy sources – the myth of Republican economic responsibility has been fatally punctured.
Log Cabin Republicans also justify their party choice on grounds of national security. But, in eight years of mostly Republican rule, America has grown weaker. Our military is stretched thin, we are still bogged down in the bloody money pit of Iraq, Russia is resurgent, and Osama remains free in the same lawless Pakistani border where Al-Qaeda is plotting. Indeed, the 9-11 attacks took place with Republicans in power, including a president who failed to take seriously reports that an attack on America was imminent.
Based on this abominable record, gay Republicans can no longer say that their party’s performance on other matters overrides its unyielding opposition to GLBT equality.
Between the sullying of America’s reputation abroad and the divisiveness on social issues at home, there is no reason that securing GLBT rights should not be the primary focus of Log Cabin Republicans. The choice they present between our equality and the safety and prosperity of this nation has proven itself false.
The final logic for Log Cabin was that it could create “Big Tent” Republicanism by nurturing friendly Republicans who could transform the party. Unfortunately, this election cycle shows that instead of changing the GOP, it is the “supportive” politicians who reinvent themselves to appeal to social conservatives.
Instead of standing on principle, ambitious Log Cabin favorites — such as Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani — made crass conversions and bowed to anti-gay zealots that an earlier incarnation of John McCain called “agents of intolerance.” We even had a sophisticated actor, Fred Thompson, who surely must socialize with gay people in Hollywood, act like he just fell off a turnip truck in overalls.
The truth is, Republican politicians who are pro-gay have no future in the GOP. If they did, former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld would have been a rising star. The most famous moderate — Arnold Schwarzenegger — has his presidential ambitions chastened by the U.S. Constitution, thus allowing him a degree of autonomy. However, those who want to be president will pander to the preachers.
The Log Cabin experiment to remake the GOP has faltered and they should consider closing shop. At times, it has been a noble project, particularly under the principled leadership of Patrick Guerriero, who refused to endorse Bush in 2004 after the president pushed for the Federal Marriage Amendment.
It is obvious, however, that this organization has outlived its usefulness and has been soundly defeated by much larger, wealthier and influential anti-gay forces. The party is now rotten to the core and thrives on homophobic bigotry, anti-immigrant sentiment, small-minded populism and foolishly mocking our foreign allies at the expense of our long-term national security (remember freedom fries?).
Exactly where does a gay Republican fit into this intolerant scenario?
Log Cabin’s tragic endorsement of John McCain exhibits an obdurate denial of his anti-gay record and a stubborn unwillingness to admit that their one-time hero is now hopeless. McCain’s VP choice, Sarah Palin, a favorite of the fundamentalist fringe, should have lead to a reevaluation, if not reversal of their endorsement. Like Palin, they didn’t blink, and are shamefully in cahoots with destructive forces that would deny GLBT people the most basic rights.
The only chance for gay Republicans to be legitimate players in the GOP is to have the party suffer a string of crushing losses. The defeats have to be so painful and substantial, that they lead to realignment, where the role of social conservatives is significantly diminished. Clearly, the Log Cabin Republicans can only save their party by helping to defeat it.
Both parties agree that this is the election of “change.” Log Cabin can take the lead by changing its endorsement of McCain before they further harm the gay and lesbian community. Their suicidal tendency to help a party that despises them is the pink elephant in the room that needs to be discussed. If they can’t reform the GOP — and there is no evidence that they can — it may be time to disband.

I think it is ignorant to think that gay issues are on the minds of either party. As gay people we need to realize that john mccain has voted against the amendment, that he actually has true republican ideals and knows that it should be a state issue. Those of us who dont want a socialist society ran by a man who stated he wanted our country to be ran more like CHINA’S!!!!! I love America. Conservatives maybe against gay people but conservatives and republicans are two different things. Do you forget that their are Conservatives in the Democrat party? They are homophobic also. Gay people want to whine about things but aren’t doing things to take that step forward. It’s with our actions that we are judged and we need to make a more positive force upon america. Make them realize that our relationships are just as meaningful as theirs. And the things that they spout are hate filled and are wrong. You have to brighten the things that bond you then work on the things that bring you apart. If we constantly say that we are different they are going to treat us like we are different. Our relationship style might be different. But the love is the same. Dont tell me I am wrong. It’s about the issues and sorry the gay issue has not been on any persons agenda.
I am an X Republican and could not agree with you more.
Every gay Republican makes his or her individual decision as to when “enough is enough”. As a political conservative, it was easy for me to vote Republican when the parties were equal in denying rights to gay people. Now that there is a real substantive difference, though, I can no longer supoort a party or candidate who would deny my rights or treat me as a second class citizen in my own nation, a nation founded and sustained on principles of equality.
My Republican party has indeed changed, and not for the better, reverting from economic liberalism to overbearing statism.
I don’t want to vote for Democratic candidates, but it is the right thing to do from my perspective. My United States has survived and will survive Democratic governance and administration without serious ill effect. So I will vote for the candidates that will work to ensure that I am treated as equal. Once that is achieved, I will fight again for candidates and policies that reflect my conservative philosopy of governance. But not before.
Yes, McCain supports the states’ rights to decide the marriage issue and he fully supports Arizona’s constitutional anti-marriage amendment. Are you saying that’s a good thing? And sure, there are conservative Democrats, but it’s the Republican party platform that has specific planks that are aimed at denying gay rights. The Democratic platform has no such planks. I agree with Wayne; consequently, I am saying that you, while entitled to your opinion, are absolutely wrong.
Richie – wow, that was a masterpicee of bullshit! That you could convince youself of that is almost unnerving.
Republican’s have become really ignorant on gay rights.
My Republican religious parents get so much homophobic anti-gay propaganda from John McCain and his inept Republican party it disgust me that I actually voted for Bush.
I won’t vote for McCain. I won’t make the same mistake twice.
I’m gay and a Republican, so it’s funny to hear that I’m a hater, homophobic, and a bigot, all against myself. This is news to me.
Wrong. The “gay thing” is on MY agenda. You are a simpleton and an idiot to think for one minute the GOP has any positive point to it at all. Most of the world laughs at us, many hate, due to terrorism we sponsor, done in our name, the economy speaks for itself, and the wicked witch of the north, is anti-gay, is anti women’s rights (even NOW rejected her!), she is a complete sell out to basic feminine equality. Mcsame is also anti-gay, wants to continue to support the military-industrial complexes raping of our economy. Next to oil, that represents one of the largest exports of wealth from the many to the very few. Gay issues ARE on the mind of the Democratic Party, did you not watch the DNC you dunce? ALL the big speakers (and small ones) addressed it. You LIE! YOU ARE A FUC*ING LIAR!!
Now, on to my personal beef with you. You use and manipulate pseudo-fact and half truths to justify your lack of interest in your own well fare. Well, ya know what motherfu*kcer? You are complacent in your own (and MINE!!!!!) relegation to 2nd class citizenship. If I ever meet you, I will scold you so loudly in public, that you will run and hide so deeply ashamed of yourself, people will have to pump sunshine to your [butt].
SeanD. (If you care to debate more, go to the gay areas of Topix.com)
Well said.
Gay conservatives who can’t bring themselves to vote for the Democrats should at least vote for Libertarians rather than Republicans. The Libertarian party isn’t virulently homophobic and it has a more principled stand on a lot of the issues that the Republicans have been f*cking up the past 8 years.
There’s nothing left to defend about the Republican party. If you’re gay or straight and don’t get buy outs or golden parachutes, it’s time to vote for Obama.
That was a lovely diatribe, Sean.
I am a Republican and gay, so today I learned that I am a hater and a bigot towards myself. I learn something new about myself everyday, so it seems.
Everyone seems to forget that the Republican Party has other platforms besides religious fundamentalism and gay rights, which is why I’m voting for John McCain. Even though the Republican Party currently is riding the mass hysteria about the economy and acting like the Democratic Party, one day they’ll return to a laissez-faire economy and limited government regulation. I shall vote Republican or Libertarian until that day is met.
Not to mention, Sarah Palin and John McCain are one of the few people who actually respect and listen to the Constitution. That’s always a plus.
The problem is that McCain supports gay rights, as an individual human being. His party, however, does not. So the Log Cabins support him as a human being, where as they would not support Obama who is personally anti-gay but who runs in a pro-gay party. If both politicians switched parties this whole election would make a hell of a lot more sense, actually. Sadly both candidates do not have their own ideas or opinions any more. So I am voting for Obama’s party, but not actually for Obama as a human being. McCain is a nice guy, really, but voting for him means voting for his party, which means stabbing yourself in the back.
On labor day weekend i was at a family bar-b-que. My brother-in-law just found out about the log cabin. He was very proud of that, because he is a republican. As we started to debate, he turned to me and said, “WHAT MAKES YOU PEOPLE SO SPECIAL THAT YOU WANT SPECIAL PRIVILEGES?” i asked him, who are you people? he said, homosexuals. i said, you think we want special rights? asking to consider us legitimately married and if something were to happen to our partner, the right to get the insurance, is a special privilege? he became very apologetic. i don’t understand how someone that is gay or has a gay relative can associate or vote for the republican party. The current party is so fundamentally run by the biblically zealots that they do not and would not help us as a social group.
I truly think the Republicans have turned their party (and certainly this Bush administration) in one that is more akin to Fascism than one which supports governmental “republican ideals”. I just read the American Heritage definition of Fascism, and it fits perfectly:
“A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.”
While the Democrats may have a small role in the current financial debacle, it is certainly 80-90 percent the making by Republicans. They certainly have been using terror, including today on the news, to scare us into giving them $700,000,000,000 in corporate welfare. They have been fighting giving the financial executives golden parachutes, which they certainly do not deserve.
Their foreign policy has been a complete failure, and today Laura Bush said thet Witch Pailin does not have any foreign policy experience.
McSame now wants to pospone the debates and his campaign. He will have no effect on the current litigation process if he goes to Washington. He is greatly “afeared” to face the competition.
And because the Republicans are the “grand old party” of HYPOCRISY. Now American Hertitage defines that as “falseness”. That is nothing nore than LIES. Next to murder, there is no numan more contemptable tha a LIAR. How can anyone even possibly think that LIARS should be running this country.
Please, I sure hope that they loose big time this electing and ALL FUTURE elections as long as I live. We do not need any of their free-wheeling thievery, ever again.
And I sure hope the Democrats do not become any where nearly as corrupt as the Elephants have been over my lifetime. Somehow, you would have thought the people of the US would have learned as the Nixon scandal.
Even Besen is giving up on the Log Cabin Republicans!
