Yes to gay marriage means no social services, Catholic Church warns

, editor in chief, 365gay.com

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington is threatening the district with suspending their social services programs if the city doesn’t change a proposed equal marriage law, the Washington Post reports.

The bill requires religious organizations to obey city laws forbidding discrimination against gay men and lesbians, though they would not have to perform or make space available to gay weddings.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.

“If the city requires this, we can’t do it,” Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said Wednesday. “The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that’s really a problem.”

Several D.C. Council members said the Catholic Church is trying to erode the city’s long-standing laws protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination.

Catholic Charities serves 68,000 people in Washington DC, including one-third of the city’s homeless.

    • We must keep in mind that the leaders of the Catholic Church actually believe that when they take communion that they are drinking the actual blood of a man that died 2,000 years ago. That’s insane! Do we really believe it is realistic to expect these people to think rationally about other stuff?

    • Whatever happened to the separation of church and state? It is not right for the Catholic church to dictate about our rights.

    • Good riddance to a Church that has been a hindrance to the progression of mankind since the Dark Ages.
A more progressive entity will gladly fill the void and cater to those who still feel the need for organized religion in their lives.

    • When people became enlightened that murder was wrong, religions that practiced human sacrifice either evolved or became extinct. Your move Catholics.

    • That’s a game more than one can play, you know. If they decide to walk on their clientele of 68,000 – let them. It’s a question of moral priorities. And when it comes to moral priorities, why not let the city revoke ALL the tax exemptions grated the church (income, property, etc). They could take that money and put it toward helping those 68,000?

    • Further illustrating the fact that Catholic “charities” in particular, and all religious “charities” in general, have nothing to do with helping because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s primarily a way to recruit and spread their dogma.

    • Well, this is nothing short of blackmail. How the church can threaten the lives of some of the most vulnerable in society because they do not agree with equality rights for Gay men and women is about as low as anybody can go. Face the facts, oh mighty church, you lose and you will have no one to blame but yourself for your hate and your disgusting greed!

    • And Washington D.C> lucks out!! Not only does a degenerate religion slink away – but the future outlook for their prepubescent boys goes up markedly!!!!!

      A win-win for Washington!!

You go Washington! Let the Catholic Church slink back into the slimy shadows of the Appalachains, leaving the nation’s capital once again a shining beacon of civilization!
