White powder sent to Mormon temples in Utah, L.A.

(Los Angeles) Letters containing a suspicious white powder were sent Thursday to Mormon temples in Los Angeles and Salt Lake City that were the sites of protests against the church’s support of California’s gay marriage ban.

The temple in the Westwood area of Los Angeles was evacuated before a hazardous materials crew determined the envelope’s contents were not toxic, said FBI spokesman Jason Pack.

The temple in downtown Salt Lake City, where the church is based, received a similar envelope containing a white powder that spilled onto a clerk’s hand.

The room was decontaminated and the envelope taken by the FBI for testing. The clerk showed no signs of illness, but the scare shut down a building at Temple Square for more than an hour, said Scott Freitag, a spokesman for the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

None of the writing on the envelope was threatening, and the church received no calls or messages related to the package, Freitag said.

Protests in recent days have targeted the Mormon church, which encouraged its members to fight the recently passed amendment banning gay marriage in California.

Authorities are looking into several theories on who sent the letters and why, Pack said.

Anthrax mailed as a white powder to Washington lawmakers and media outlets killed five people and sickened 17 just weeks after the attacks of September 11, 2001. Periodic hoaxes modeled on the anthrax mailings have popped up since then but usually prove harmless.

    • Justin – I agree that you are probably right in your assertion, but since we don’t know for sure one way or another – it is best to inform some GLBT people who might let their anger push them toward poor judgment to hold back. Nothing would make me happier than to see the Feds determine it was an inside job. The poster who said it was cocaine from the pastor’s prostitute boyfriend was pretty funny though! Let’s keep it focused and productive!

    • How many times in the past have we seen this same kind of crap ? No matter who the perpetrator was, a church, or religion as a whole, Prop 8 was a ‘terrorist’ act that was passed against the gay minority based solely on fear and lies.

How does a ‘terrorist’ organization take the heat off of themselves and their own ‘terrorist act’ ? They create an imaginary ‘terrorist response’ big enough to provide shelter so that their own ‘terrorist’ actions move to the background/past.

This, plain and simple, is a no-brainer folks… how many times has this scenario been replayed in the last eight years… suddenly… gasp !… ‘anthrax’ filled envelopes make a grand re-appearance… GASP !!! … COULD IT BE THOSE GAY TERRORIST’S ???… Those rabid Aids infected GAYS coming to GET those innocent straight Mormons… and GASP… the CHILDREN !!!!… BOOOOOOO!!!

Sorry, but the Mormons need to pull their head out if they think this tune hasn’t been played before, and is seen as anything more or less than YET ANOTHER attempt to play the ‘gettin really old boogie-man card’ that we ALL should easily be able to see through by now.

Truth is, either the Mormon Church, or someone in the Mormon Church ‘planted’ these envelopes to get the Feds/Homeland Security involved to take the heat off of themselves & move the terrorist label from themselves to the gay population at large.

Just one more case of a ‘terrorist’ organization terrorizing those that fail to ‘conform’ to their doctrine, and then, when the victim’s rise up against the tyrany of the terrorist to defend themselves and their right’s, the terrorist then plays the oldest magician trick in the book… create an illusion where the perpetrator becomes the victim, and the victim becomes the perpetrator… nothing new here !

    • Maybe the white powder was cocaine or crystal meth sent by one of their leader’s prostitute boyfriends.

This is your solution? And you call other people’s posts silly and counter-productive. Sheeesh.

    • “x man” and “Rodney” – Yes, everyone understands your anger and shares in it -but certainly not to the extent you state here. Yes, we ARE angry and way beyond hurt at this point – but it’s also really easy for this kind of energy to blowup in our own faces and this is where we must be smart – not by kissing anybody’s ass, but by not allowing the media to exploit overtly hostile and potentially dangerous actions that serve nobody any good, least of all us. (You know, just like they do at the Gay Pride parade’s when they only focus on the highly theatrical people and not on the more ordinary ones that viewers might be able to associate with – it’s a way of objecting and demonizing us by using our own behavior against us by taking it out of context.) Feel with your heart – but think with your head. Use that anger in a constructive way. Make posters, go to rally’s , tell all your friends!

    • Ok guys and gals dont get carried away IF we did it and i dont believe we did but time will tell lets keep it atleast civil the protests across this nation are wonderful and we do need to keep it up as well as be thinking whats next but i’m afraid if we get too crazy people will say oh they are different this isnt the way to go about it

    • Rodney, seriously now. While I understand and share your frustration and anger, I do not believe yours is the best solution. It is violent, dangerous, and I will have no part of it. I do recommend however to hit them where it really hurts…in the wallet. If every gay person in this country refused to pay their state and federal taxes this coming April, I believe we would get the attention we need to get our equal rights argument in the courts rather than on ballots where they are subject to popular opinoin. We should not have to change anyone’s opinion on gay rights with Kumbaya crap I agree, and I frankly don’t care if a majority of this country disapproves of my “lifestyle” (what a joke!). I live in America and the Bill of Rights assures me my EQUAL rights. We do need to fight harder. We might need to fight dirty, but we must stop short of terrorism at all costs. Peace, brother.

    • NO! NO! NO! Don’t threaten to blow up their PAGAN FERTILITY CULT temples; SEDUCE THEIR MISSIONARIES (take it from me, folks, it ain’t hard) … when they bring out their flip charts, put on a porno DVD and tell ‘em, “now THAT’S a religious experience, bois!” They’ll either run like hell, or get hard. I’m betting the latter. They’re locked up for TWO YEARS with each other and NOT allowed to MASTURBATE! Yeah. Right.

They better not come onto MY front porch, or they’re liable to find out just HOW good I am with a dildo!

      Cheers,

    • Too bad it wasn’t real anthrax or better yet a bomb. As far as I am concerned we’re long passed the time to stop singing and start swinging. If the Mormons or any other religious group uses their status as a “church” or a 501 c3 non-for-profit to eliminate our rights then we should have no qualms about ripping into theirs. They, Mormons and opponents to gay rights, often claim that they have the right to vote, and the right to express their opinion by eliminating our rights. Well, then by the same token, we have the 2nd Amendment right to blow their heads off, we also have the right to send mail with white powder to them. If the right to vote gives them the right to vote away our human rights, then the by the very same logic the 2nd Amendment gives us the right to kill them. If the Freedom of Speech gives homophobes and mormons the right to slander us and work to deny us our civil rights, then the right to use the mail service by that very same logic gives us the right to send white powder, anthrax or a bomb.

Also, since Mormons and other homophobes believe that they have some civil right to vote away our rights. Then by that VERY same logic, we have the right to vote to ban Mormonism and homophobia under penalty of torture and death.

What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If Mormons believe that they can meddle in the personal private contractual affairs of gays and lesbians and erase more than 17,000 rights of married couples, then by that very same logic they, their lives, their careers, their children, families and churches are open season.

As radical as what I am writing might seem, there are more and more and more gay and lesbian people who think just like me. We’re tired of sell outs pushing this kumbaya b*llshit. We’re sick of being fed the tranquilizing drug of gradualism by supposed “allies” and self appointed “leaders” in the gay community. Gay people need to summon the spirit of Stonewall and use any means necessary, including playing dirty, to win our equal rights. As long as we keep singing kumbaya and chanting tacky rhyming mantras, we’ll get nowhere. When black people got tired of racism, they founded the Black Panther Party and they engaged in paramilitary tactics to prevent racist abuse by cops and others. When Jews got sick of being attacked by anti-semites they formed the JDL(Jewish Defense League) and didn’t take any s*it from noone. Even the Scientologists, as nutty as they are, have the Guardian’s Office and will go after anyone who attacks Scientology with a vengeance. Gays and lesbians have done NOTHING thus far, which justifies anyone taking away our rights. But if we really want our equal rights, we need to be ready to do the dirty work to get them and keep them. And to put it bluntly, no amount of candlelight vigils, peaceful marches, catchy chants or trying to convince irrational illogical homophobes will ever work. We need to act far far far far more agressively, we need to be far less tolerant of homophobes, mormons and those which would hide behind their religious freedom to slander, libel and defame us. We need to be on the attack. The best defense is a good offense. So keep that white powder coming, keep harassing homophobes, slash the tires of prop 8 supporters, boycott their places of work until they’re fired, sue them for discrimination, report all the churches who supported Prop 8 to the IRS until all their doors are shut.

And to the people who sent the white powder to the Mormon temples, GOOD JOB. I would like to shake your hand.

    • My guesses would be James Dobson, Tony Perkins, Ann Coulter or the Pope. LOL! No GLBT person in their right mind would do such an incredibly STUPID thing.

    • That’s not cool. Our concerns should be heard, but in a peaceful manner that brings others to our side. This doesn’t accomplish that. Assuming one of ours did it, bad move. If Randy is right and they sent it to themselves to garner sympathy, it’s just another reason they deserve our loathing. I hope the cops solve it in any case, otherwise it will be attributed to our whole community when “we” didn’t do it.

    • OK. Who stands to benefit from terrorist attacks on Mormons? Not us. Could this be another self-inflicted “B” scar woman type thing? Nothing surprises me any more.
