Weir: Skating as a “gay” sport a misconception

, 365gay.com

Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir has something  to say about the gayness of men in spandex.

In a segment that airs tonight on “HBO Real Sports,” Weir is asked whether his sport’s “gay” reputation hurts its popularity. Does it have to be more “butch” to attract a wider audience?

“I know that for the men’s population of the Unites States, figure skating is a ‘gay’ sport and that’s a misconception,” Weir said in the segment. “There are so many straight athletes in figure skating. I think it’s the music and the costumes that turn most men off. Because they want to see, well, they want to see spandex-ed men hitting each others’ ass and throwing a ball. It’s very different.”

Weir also discussed his love of “sparkly things” and “the theatre of figure skating.”

The figure skating competition in the Vancouver, British Columbia, 2010 winter games begin on Feb. 14.

    • There’s no reason for the judge to recuse himself. No matter what he does, this case is going to the US Supreme Court.

    • Ah, fear of the gay. Is that why every skater who is part of a pair of skaters is usually paired up with a skater of the opposite sex?

In fact, that’s it in a way. Can you imagine the cries of indignation if two guys tried to compete representing USA skating team together. People who dont even watch skating would flip.

    • I love Johnny Weir.
Just as flamboyant as Adam Lambert but not nearly as obnoxious.
Anyway, Weir…love the comments he made about football.
He’s such a queen. Gotta love him.

    • “Men’s Figure Skating” is an oxymoron. One look at Weir’s Cruella Deville dress he skates in will pretty much drive that point home. Seeing the men flouncing around like the little mermaid is cringe-worthy. I mean hey… I say you be as big a queen as you want and I’ll love you more. But don’t say Figure Skating isn’t a “gay sport.”

I mean, say it’s not a sport at all if you must… I think of it more like a performing art. Why isn’t there ballet in the olympics? And aside from good boyfriends and husbands who’ll watch just to be nice, do you know any straight men who actually LIKE figure skating? Really?

    • Well ballet isn’t nearly as dangerous as figure skating. then again i hear that foot ball players do ballet.

    • I admire those can figure skate gay, bi or straight. They have great athletic ability as they skate for the gold.

There are plenty of other gay men playing sports but must remain in the closet due to fear of being exposed.

All jocks put on there jockstraps the same way.
