The New York State Legislature reconvenes for a special session today starting at 12 p.m.

Gov. David Paterson directed them to take up equal marriage – they can choose to do so or not, but they’ll have to discuss why.

The state assembly has already passed an equal marriage bill and Gov. Paterson has said he will sign it if it reaches his desk. All we need is for the state senate to pass the bill.

This is our best chance for marriage in New York State until after the midterm elections.

    • There should be a vote, and i would guess it would be very close. I think we’d only need 31 votes, because in case of a tie the new Lt Gov would break for marriage equality (presumably) I’d guess that a couple republicans would vote for it as they did in the assembly, hopefully they would cancel out any democrats voting against it. But more importantly, its important for the senators to actually go on the record so we know where everyone stands….

    • With only 25 guaranteed votes, how on earth can it pass when we need 32 that may have to include some republicans. Not going to fly. I hope I’m wrong, but my gut feeling says no.
