Black Homophobia.

About 57-58% of Blacks voted for prop8, not 70%

Blacks are reluctant to join with another oppressed group. Choose winners, not losers may be the mentality.

Poor people are often conservative, fearing losing the little they have, and not being able to see the way to a better future. This may now be changing with Obama's presidency. So their churches are usually conservative.

Blacks were often lynched in the old south, and part of lynching was castration. Just part of making them feel like less of a man (and more of a subhuman.) So there is a big macho thing out of this in the Black community, and being gay often invokes ideas of Schartzneggers "girly men" comment.

It also leads to some often virulent homophobia from blacks. Especially those totally in the closet, terrified of being outed.

My opinions and things i have picked up from reading web items.

And while Dr. MLK and his Wife Coretta Scott King in particular were supporters of gay equality, it seems to me that their daughter led an anti-gay march through Atlanta. If I'm wrong, I apologize, but it shows just how irrational homophobia is. Literally it is an induced mental illness.

But the world has been full of crazy people, especially those who have acceded to lots of power. Sickos like hitler, Stalin, etc etc.

Coretta was very pro-gay as was Dr. King. His "Right Hand Man" was Bayard Rustin and he organized the march on Washington and was behind Doctor Kings methodology for achieving civil rights. He went to India and studied Ghandi and brought the message back to Ebenezer and The Kings. He was ostracized by the other black leaders because he was openly gay.
I still can't figure out where the pride comes from given that they adopted their slave owners religion rather than re-establishing the African beliefs that they were robbed of. Ironic that they are using the religion of their oppressors to oppress others. They were not Christian when they were dragged here. They were converted by their owners and are continuining the fine biggoted work of their former "owners".
Today in Africa they will feed you if you put on a t-shirt and shorts and vow to not use rubbers. Sanwiches for souls. I don't think Jesus expected a dress code for the starving.
I'm with Eddie. Where is James Withers on this? He is always letting us know that it is their faith and not their color but truthfully look at where their "faith" came from. Be beaten and starve or believe.
This is by far one of the most "in your face faggot" things I have seen and I want to hear what Mr. Withers has to say about this as much as the rest of you do.
It totally goes against what the King's espoused and their foundation should be ashamed of themselves. They seem to have forgotten the message or, like every other church are just pandering to fill the baskets by attracting the haters and their money. Good Job!!!

It seems odd to see people using this article to critize James Withers. The article only appeared this morning. Apparently, Withers is obligated to rush over and write an indignant article or post an angry comment as soon as he possibly can. Isn't he allowed to write what he wants, like everyone else is?

I'm also not clear on how "the black community is brazen in its bigotry." Ebenezer Baptist Church is not the entire black community. Let's put the blame where it lies: on the leadership of that particular church.

This sad news, very dissapointing. Coretta Scott King was very vocal of her support of lgbt equality. This does not represent the legacy King left us all.

This is what I have been saying the whole time. We, as a group or community, don't get it.

Obama has requested that Rick warren give the convocation for the inauguration. IN WASHINGTON.

But the good little queers are going to stay out of sight in Atlanta? We are doing this to ourselves.

So I wonder if James Whithers is going to resign - now that his whole publication is racist because they published this.

James - not a word from you on this?

That's not what Coretta Scott King said, to her:
Homophobia is like racism and anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry in that it seeks to dehumanize a large group of people, to deny their humanity, their dignity and personhood.

It seems odd that they would choose such an obvious bigot. It give the appearance of saying "We got ours, screw everyone else.".
