If you think that people look at you different because you want to be with the same sex, well then you are absolutely right. My beliefs weather relion or not are always the same, ONE MAN, ONE WOMAN, how else does one carry on the human race? The movie with Arnold Schwartsenegger(sp) about having a baby was fiction, just a movie, so no matter how many times you and your lover try anal sex neither one of you will get pregnant, sorry to dissapoint you, moron!!

I used to be proud to be a VERMONTER, but now I’m ashamed to let people know that I’m from here. You might just as well burn the constitution. I believe Kevin Mullin must of gotten a blow-job from his son, that’s why he voted for it, instead of letting the people vote on it. What happened to “WE” the people, not “ME” the politician. If you’re married in Vermont (or MA or CT), then even if you’re in Texas, some companies will treat you like any other married couple. Progressive Insurance recognizes gay couples, even in its homophobic home state of Ohio. State recognition does matter, even if your state isn’t the one doing the recognizing.

Here are answers to your questions:
The bill as enacted by the Vermont State Senate does not affect existing civil unions. They remain joined in civil union, with all the same ramifications under Vermont law. If they wish to marry in Vermont, they may do so through the same steps as any other person. Once the State starts issuing civil marriage licenses to same-sex couples, it will no longer issue civil union licenses, so we won’t see any new civil unions after this law takes effect. The bill could change in the House, but that’s the current framework.

Hope you and your partner come to Vermont to get married, WHEN nit if passed the law will go into effect 9/1/09

Several questions:

1. If the bill passes in the house and senate, can it become law if the governor doesn’t sign it, but doesn’t veto it either?

2. If it should become law, what becomes of the current Vermont civil unions? Do they stay as civil unions or to they get changed to civil marriage? Will couples who have civil unions have to “re-marry”?

Can someone familiar with Vermont law shed some light on these issues? My partner and I have a civil union, live in Texas (where it won’t be recognized), but that’s another issue.

Ok,ok. I concede that point to ya Drewski. However, maryland still has a loooong way to go, and it also harbors a fair amount of loony religious types. Would be nice if they could pull it off but like I said, I’ll be quite surprised to ever see Maryland embrace marriage equality.

Shawn–check older stories in the marriage thread. Can’t remember if marriage issue is currently with Maryland courts, or if there’s a bill in the legislature. Sure it has opponents, and sure it may not make it on the first try, but the fact that the subject has gotten as far as it has is still a damn sight better than ANY Eastern state south of Jersey…and do we really want to discuss anything to the West? California?
