Vanasco: Uproar in NY Senate – gay marriage gone?
The New York Times is reporting that the Democrats have suddenly – and unexpectedly – lost control of the NYS Senate after two Democrats defected.
This comes after gay marriage advocates were fairly confidently predicting that New York State would have gay marriage by Pride. The State Assembly has already voted in favor; the governor has said he’d sign. The Times said:
“Why Mr. Espada and Mr. Monserrate suddenly defected on Monday afternoon was not immediately clear.
One source of contention among Democrats recently has been Mr. Smith’s support for same-sex marriage. Senator Rubén Díaz Jr., a Democrat from the Bronx, has been outspoken in his insistence that legislation allowing gay couples to marry not be allowed to come to a vote. Some had speculated he might leave the Democratic Party if Mr. Smith were to allow a vote.
But Mr. Diaz did not join Mr. Espada and Mr. Monserrate in the leadership vote on Monday. It was not immediately clear whether the same-sex marriage legislation played any role in the leadership dispute.”
This from the New York Daily News:
“Another rumor du jour is that Diaz, who is furious that the gay marriage bill he opposes appears to be gaining some traction in the Senate, would be angry enough with Smith if the measure comes up for a vote on the floor to join the Senate GOP.
I asked Diaz about that, and he said:
“Today? No. Tomorrow? Who knows? Tomorrow is another day. It’s always another day. You ask me do I plan to do that. I say, no. In the future, who knows what the future brings.”
“The only thing I can tell you, and you can interpret this any which way you want: When I give my word, I keep my word. In order for me to break my word, you have to break yours first.”Here’s how I interpret that:
It’s a (typically) cryptic way of Diaz Sr. confirming the worst fears of marriage advocates – that there was indeed a deal between himself and Smith that the gay marriage bill would not come to the floor in exchange for Diaz Sr.’s support of Smith for majority leader.
And now, in Diaz Sr.’s mind, if Smith brings the bill to the floor, all bets are off.”
PolitickerNY says that the coup is completed; Republicans are back in control. The site says that the revolt happened because of unhappiness with leader Malcolm Smith – it was “chaos,” they said.
Whyever it happened, it seems very unlikely that a Republican-controlled NY Senate will allow gay marriage to come up for a vote.

SCREWED AGAIN , FOLKS !! GETTIN USED TO THIS? !!WELL, LET THEM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ,NEW YORK !!SAY SOMETHING !
For all those who continue to think we should fight State by State…you now how two of the largest/most populist states (CA & NY) against us. We need to fight NATIONALLY/FEDERALLY not State by State!
Another Proposition 8 supporter of Hispanic decent strikes again. I would think a minority would support a moinority. I bet he is a Catholic.
The Governor should never have pushed it this year — he KNEW we weren’t ready. But (and this seems to be a New England thing) getting reelected means he needs support from Proggies, and pushing marriage equality is a good way to get Proggies to vote for you.
I really hate politics.
So, it is not about doing the right thing. It is all about gaining power – at whatever the cost is. Ethics in N.Y. – not a chance.
I think it’s time to forget about same sex marriage in NY and to concentrate of fucking over Ruben Diaz’s constituents for voting for this Nazi.
Political agendas at the expense of the people…how 1960’s of you Diaz.
O well, at least we have the richest state in our favor (CT) and the rest of the northeast (mostly).
I cant wait to watch this guy’s political career languish. I hope it does pass despite this guy throwing a hissy fit. I agree, fuck state level, federal is the real deal.
Remember this Diaz:
“The people you walk on on your way up, you might meet up, on your way down.”
~Little feat
These scum face politicians have one thing in mind first and foremost. Stay in office. I mean come on these guys have it so good why would any of them want a real job. Dirty sum buckets think about themselves first, they could give a sh@t about the people.
It is a game of politics…I don’t like what has happened, but it is self serving political gaines at its’ best.
Their had to be more in the Gold Pot for the democratics defectors than to leave because of Gay Marriage. And only their greed knows it.
This was only an attempt, and an illegal one at that. I love this one:
“This is obviously an attempt by a couple of people to get personal power at the expense of the taxpayers,” Mr. Sheinkopf said. “It disrupts the Senate at a critical period, when issues like mayoral control are yet undecided. And the taxpayers are going to remember these guys by first and last name next year.”
Oh yes…we will.
There will be MAJOR payback next year – COUNT ON IT! Diaz is a hateful fuck and his day is rapidly coming.
This is so relievably filthy, wolves in sheep’s clothing…But Diaz, Espada and Monseratte need to absolutely targeted for sound defeat.
But out of the ashes of defeat….this is a call for gay people all throughout the land to work their way up to public office on every level. Let gay and lesbian New Yorkers vie to replace this despicable trio with gay and lesbian office holders. Onward and forward lesbian and gay New Yorkers and take the NY Assembly away from the GOPs and from traitors in the Dem party! And pass laws against clergy in political office. and investigate Mr.Diaz’s church for violations of US Tax code and strip tax-exempt status from his church.
Anyone else who still thinks that ethnic minorities are our allies
Latest word is that this was not about gay marriage issue.
This development apparently has nothing to do with same-sex marriage. The two defectors were both under indictment. They were evidently promised something by the Republicans. In any case, Malcolm Smith was not our friend. I doubt that he would have scheduled a vote on same-sex marriage either. As long as New York recognizes gay marriages from elsewhere, this is not a great disaster. We can always go to Massachusetts or Connecticut (or New Jersey, soon) to have the ceremony.
