I hope that it remains true that North Easterners are more intelligent than Californians. Mainers need all New Englanders (and beyond) support to fight off this infiltration of right-wing, anti-human rights activism. Send those crazy morons home...back under the rock they crawled out from under.

Lot of 55-plus in that audience. Whole lot. Most seemed older than that. This past Presidential election should've served notice to seniors--if anybody ever motivates younger people to vote on things that really affect them, then seniors might wanna watch that attitude that society owes them just 'cause they got old. Somebody has to pay for that Social Security and Medicare. Wanna keep me from getting married? Imagine if everybody from the MTV Awards spent a year campaigning for means-testing for Medicare. There're a lot of old people who suddenly wouldn't have the money for golf every day. I don't want to see things treated like that--like zero-sum contests. They rarely are. But when it comes to civil rights, both the GOP and the Catholic Church would do well to consider what life might be like if younger Americans decided they wanted to push the country HARD in a different direction.

JerryM70: Re: Wisconsin

Same thing happened here in Arizona.

The religious extremists told the State of Arizona that they only wanted to "protect" marriage by amending our State Constitution to state that only one man/one woman marriages were valid in this State. That they were not going to go after domestic partner benefits.

Well, guess what happened a few weeks ago?

The Governor, Jan Brewer, signed a bill that effectively canceled health benefits for State employees in a domestic partnership (gay and straight). This saved the State $3 Million dollars, out of over $650 Million dollars that they spend on health benefits for all State employees.

So, about 400 domestic partners (gay and straight) will be losing their health coverage on Oct. 1st

Yes, THEY LIED!

How "Christian" of them.

Yes on 1 coffers are dwindling?? I heard that on WGME, (Thanks ScottNH, for the video clip). This is the time to give lots of money to No on 1 so that No on 1 can more effectively educate the Maine public to VOTE NO ON 1 on November 4th at the polls in their state. I plan to give money to No on 1 in Maine and to Iowa's equality group so that they can counter Vander Plaats and the other Iowa governor candidates who want to roll back Iowa's brand new marriage equality.

Who makes law in a representational democracy? Is it not the legislature? Did they not vote for a gay marriage bill that was passed and signed into law by the governor? We need to back to making law the old fashioned way, by the legislature, through our representatives, as this provides "checks and balances", promoted by our Founding Fathers. Otherwise laws could be enacted that could deprive anyone of their rights in a way against the Constitution. What other group of citizens has rights taken away by referendum?

WGME Portland crashed the Yes on 1 rally last weekend. They say the Yes on 1 coffers are dwindling - I truly hope so, because if they go silent we can strongly counter their misinformation right up until election day (IF we raise the $$, that is).

Here's the clip: http://www.wgme.com/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wgme_vid_632.shtml A quote from the organizer really struck me - they insisted on a media black out so their members would feel 'protected,' so they wouldn't be labeled 'bigots'... Well once upon a time the local press used to ambush patrons of gay bars with cameras. Names and pictures would be posted prominently in the newspapers. I just find it ironic that these same people are desperately fearful that someone is going to shine a light on them.
