Utah faces gay boycott over Mormon support for Prop 8

(Salt Lake City, Utah) Utah’s growing tourism industry and the star-studded Sundance Film Festival are being targeted for a boycott by bloggers, gay rights activists and others seeking to punish the Mormon church for its aggressive promotion of California’s ban on gay marriage.
It could be a heavy price to pay. Tourism brings in $6 billion a year to Utah, with world-class skiing, a spectacular red rock country and the film festival founded by Robert Redford, among other popular tourist draws.“At a fundamental level, the Utah Mormons crossed the line on this one,” said gay rights activist John Aravosis, an influential blogger in Washington, D.C.
“They just took marriage away from 20,000 couples and made their children bastards,” he said. “You don’t do that and get away with it.”
Salt Lake City is the world headquarters for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which counts about 62 percent of Utah residents as members.
The church encouraged its members to work to pass California’s Proposition 8 by volunteering their time and money for the campaign. Thousands of Mormons worked as grassroots volunteers and gave tens of millions of dollars to the campaign.
The ballot measure passed Tuesday. It amends the California Constitution to define marriage as a heterosexual act, overriding a state Supreme Court ruling that briefly gave same-sex couples the right to wed.
The backlash against the church - and by extension Utah - has been immediate. Protests erupted outside Mormon temples, Facebook groups formed telling people to boycott Utah, and Web sites such as mormonsstoleourrights.com began popping up, calling for an end to the church’s tax-exempt status.
Church spokeswoman Kim Farah said in a statement about the temple protests Friday that it is “disturbing” that the church is being singled out for exercising its right to speak up in a free election.
“While those who disagree with our position on Proposition 8 have the right to make their feelings known, it is wrong to target the Church and its sacred places of worship for being part of the democratic process,” Farah said.
The church had said in a statement after Tuesday’s vote that “no one on any side of the question should be vilified, intimidated, harassed or subject to erroneous information.”
Aravosis is the editor of the popular americablog.com, which has about 900,000 unique monthly visitors.
He is calling for skiers to choose any state but Utah and for Hollywood actors and directors to pull out of the Sundance Film Festival. Other bloggers and readers have responded to his call.
“There’s a movement afoot and large donors are involved who are very interested in organizing a campaign, because I do not believe in frivolous boycotts,” said Aravosis, who has helped organize boycotts against “Dr. Laura” Schlessinger’s television show, Microsoft and Ford over gay rights issues.
“The main focus is going to be going after the Utah brand,” he said. “At this point, honestly, we’re going to destroy the Utah brand. It is a hate state.”
Gay rights groups did not immediately weigh in on calls for a boycott. Jim Key, spokesman for the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, said he had heard little about such an effort.
“It’s not something that we have called for, but we do think it is important to send a message to the Mormon church,” Key said. He noted an effort run by the center to overturn Proposition 8 that sends a postcard to the Mormon church president with each contribution made.
A Sundance spokeswoman didn’t return messages. Leigh von der Esch, managing director of the Utah Office of Tourism, said that she’s aware there’s been discussion of a boycott, but that her office hadn’t received any calls about it Thursday. State offices are closed Friday.
“We’re respectful of both sides of the equation and realize it’s an emotional issue, but we are here promoting what we think is the best state in the country,” she said.
What kind of economic, religious or political impact, if any, a boycott might have is unclear. The Mormon church has members all over the world and no plans to change its stance on gay marriage.
Aravosis is not calling for a boycott of California, though that state’s voters actually approved the ban.
“At this point, the Californians are the victims and the Mormons are the persecutors,” he said. “We had won this until they swept in. … We need to send a message to Utah that they need to stop trying to inflict their way of life on every other state.”
Bob Malone, CEO and president of the Park City Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, said it is unfair to try to punish certain industries or parts of the state over an issue it had nothing to do with.
“It’s really not a Park City thing, and I don’t see it as a state thing. That was more of a religious issue,” he said. “To sweep people in who really have nothing to do with that issue and have no influence over religious issues - it’s sad that people kind of think that and say, ‘We’re going to bury you.’ It’s sad to hear people talk like that.”

finally, someone focusing on leveraging one of our strengths, money! It’s about time and I wish we would expand this effort to include our future votes, contributions and volunteer work. I am very confident that if we did it would not only have an impact but people all across this nation would finally get it and understand we are not a small fringe group, we are a strong meaningful group that continues to grow and has value to any party or business.
This is a new age and we as a community need to also recognize that we have come a long way since stonewall and it’s time for more than just civil disobedience.
The majority population of Utah buried us in California. And yes, it’s sad to hear people talk like that. You are not immune. Now pay the piper.
–The church had said in a statement after Tuesday’s vote that “no one on any side of the question should be vilified, intimidated, harassed or subject to erroneous information.”–
Now that they’ve won due to vilifying, intimidating, harassing, and lying about us, it should stop.
Oh, the hypocrisy!
Yes, this is our power through our
wallets! Start with tourism boycots
but add corporate ones too. We need to
find out a list of Utah based companies
and add them to our “don’t use” list!
I wouldn’t even take a flight which
used SLC as a hub(sorry Delta).
when the Sundance Film Festival moves out of Utah, then you’ll know this boycott has legs. but all those queers involved with the fest will never do that, nor will Redford or Gilmore. the fest will continue to be a huge boon to the local economy. and this boycott is a pretty empty threat.
YES, the boycott is on!
Mr Redford, Sundance, Park City, and I’ll throw in the IFC and Sundance tv channels too.
And if we get some traction out of this, then California is next - I personally will not step foot in Utah nor California where I am not welcome.
Bring it on folks - please tell us here back East what other Mormon-lead businesses are out there that we should avoid! Marriott, Hyatt…which ones? Please post so that we can show support for you guys…in the meantime, we can write to Redford and the Sundance folks and say, sorry - move out of Utah, or NO Gay participation!
I wonder how many Gay men and women can actually do it though - no designers, no movie folks, no Gay in-put at all at Sundance!
The Mormons and Utah do not need to be boycotted! Californians voted down Prop 8!! California needs to be boycotted. Opps, don’t want to give up you superficial fix! Don’t visit their theme parks, don’t visit their beaches, don’t go to their movies or watch their TV shows.
Mormons, until the latter half (pun there) of the 20th century didn’t allow blacks in their fold! Mormons are one of the most loving religious groups you.ll find. They just need time to see the error of their ways as they did with blacks. Communication not a boycott is what they need. Let’s have some christian charity!
“the church is being singled out for exercising its right to speak up in a free election.”
The church is full of bullshit and hypocrisy. Lady!!! What goes around comes around.
Jim - what are you smoking? Mormons are not loving!!! Nor are they Christian because they have no Christ-like qualities! I grew up mormon, I served a mormon mission and the church and when I finally had the fortitude to come up I was shunned by not only the church but also my family under direction from the church!!! And they are millions strong. Reading a hate filled letter to millions telling them that it is their responsibility to deny gay rights was what they did. Even members within the church were threatened if they did not comply. They are all about control. You state that they “allowed” blacks full membership - that ONLY occurred in 1978 after the government threatened to revoke their tax-exempt status because of their discriminatory views. They fought ERA (Equal Rights Amend - for women, they fought Black Civil Rights, and now they are fighting us!!!). If they were loving, they would not try to FORCE people to view the world or regilion through their narrow bigoted views…they’d follow the person who is suppose to be their leader (Christ) and love everyone regardless…BUT THEY DON’T. Lets not forget the biggest hypocrisy of it all - they started out as poloygamists and were persecuted because of it…they only stopped that practise again because of the government threatening them…now they have become the persecutors!!!! If you are still Mormon and gay, you should resign your memebership (I just did on Wednesday)….and EVERY gay should sign the petition to have the mormon cults tax-exempt status revoked…as well as sending emails to the Utah and California tourism websites denouncing them and your intent not to visit or support them!!!!
Ski in Wyoming instead of Utah, hike in California instead of Utah, watch movies in any other city but Park City, fly Delta Airlines through any of its hubs but Salt Lake City. Do anything you can not to support the Utahn economy.
Don’t forget to add Florida to that list of boycotted destinations. Here it takes a 60% majority to amend the Florida Constitution and the hate amendment passed with 70%.
Why would there be any talk of boycotting Utah or Florida. There are good people in each of these states. There are people in these states that need our support.
Take the battle to where the battle is. The Mormon Church has made a stand against us. The Black Church has made a stand against our families.
To boycott Utah is like saying boycott the Cosby Show because so many black folk voted for 8.
I don’t believe the state of Utah should be boycotted at all!
I am a lesbian living in Utah. We are doing everything we can to help support the overturning of prop 8. The church is the problem, not Utah. I attended a protest at the Salt Lake City temple on friday, along with 3000 other Utahans. We’re obviously not the problem. Also, we can’t completely blame the church. 51% of Californias voted “Yes”. Not all of them were Mormon. I do think that the church getting involved the way they did was very wrong, however the state of Utah is not to blame. We aren’t happy about Prop 8 either.
While I agree that boycotts makes sense I believe they should not be targeted so generally and I don’t understand the Sundance boycott at all. As far as I know Sundance has always been pretty supportive of gay rights through their films. The home of the Mormon Church, Salt Lake City, seems a good tourism boycott target outside of California, but I other than that I would rather see a list of National and Californian businesses that supported Prop 8 with large donations be boycotted. It is our right NOT to support these businesses. For that matter, we should boycott all businesses that supported gay marriage bans in all states where it passed.
I think it is important to fight in California and Utah but i also think we should be rallying to the cause nation wide to make our voices heard and tell everyone it’s over we’re not going to be treated as second class citizens anymore that we should have equal rights being the TAX PAYING citizens that we are it isnt and never should be a religious right to interfere in our loves and personal lives
