(Montevido) Uruguay is moving to lift a ban on homosexuals joining the armed forces.
The defense ministry confirms that Minister Jose Bayardi has signed a decree lifting the ban imposed by the 1973-85 military dictatorship.
The army said Wednesday it has received the decree, which has yet to be signed by President Tabare Vazquez.
The law had barred people with what it called “open sexual deviations” from entering the military academies.
It includes homosexuality among the “mental illnesses and disorders” that make a person unsuitable to join the armed forces.
The new decree states that sexual orientation will no longer be considered a reason to prevent people entering the military.

Yes, Uruguay did do the right thing, and it’s not the first time. They also have passed legislation legalizing Civil Unions, the first national legal recognition for same-sex couples in Latin America. Uruguay is by far the most secular of the South American countries.
Lesson learned: Democrats will ALWAYS promise us what we want to hear and they will always make excuses for why they can’t when they get into office. Let’s stop voting for Democrats are start putting forward our own candidates who actually fight along side us for our rights.

It seems that you have an extremely narrow and intolerant view of what a gay person is supposed to be. Have you ever pondered that some gay people might be drawn to military service as an honorable profession? Others may view it as their best hope of getting out of poverty in a backwater town, while earning a form of education.
Guess what, gay people can be black, white, Asian, conservative, liberal, christians, Jews, Muslims, Wiccans, atheists, young, old, attractive, unattractive, able-bodied, or physically or mentally challenged. Whatever path they choose in life, they should not be denied the opportunity to pursue it simply because of their sexual orientation. If they succeed or fail, it should be because of their merits, not their sexuality.
Have you actually sat down and PONDERED the notion that a commander-in-chief who deems homosexuals to be worthy targets of military assault is unlikely to arm and train the very people he wants to attack?

First, Shawn, please look at yourself: people who really want to spread peace in the world start with themselves, and address their own anger and aggressiveness. If you are filled with anger and act out aggressively, then you are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
