I wonder if its easier for smaller countries to move forward on adoption... it seems like its always the smaller countries (and states) that move forward first.

Uruguay, unlike its neighboring nations, is considered a secular state. They truly have a separation between church and state and this has enabled it to make significant progress on GLBT issues/rights. In fact, it was the first Latin American country to legalize same and different sex civil unions at a national level in the year 2007.

There are many children in the U.S.A. that need homes and many gay/lesbian couples more than willing to adopt.

It is sad that we cannot adopt children from our own country, yet we can go to Uruguay and adopt one of their needy children.

I know laws differ from state to state, but really....why should it matter. I am in a loving relationship and have a stable home and job. I can more than afford a child and I should be able to adopt if it is in the best interest of the child.

Unless Children's homes and foster parenting is in the best interest of the child, making them feel unwanted and alone.

Kudos to Uruguay!
