Uruguay lawmakers OK gay adoption

(Montevido, Uruguay)  Lawmakers in Uruguay have approved a bill allowing gay and lesbian couples to adopt.

Despite opposition from Uruguay’s Roman Catholic Church and some of the political opposition, the 99-seat Chamber or Representatives on Thursday passed the bill 40-13, with the remaining members absent.

It goes next to the Senate, which approved an earlier version of the bill in July but must now vote again on modifications.

If it becomes law, Uruguay would be the first country in Latin American to allow adoption by gay and lesbian couples.

The law supported by socialist President Tabare Vazquez’s Broad Front coalition, which has already legalized gay civil unions and ended a ban on homosexuals in the armed forces.

    • I wonder if its easier for smaller countries to move forward on adoption… it seems like its always the smaller countries (and states) that move forward first.

    • Uruguay, unlike its neighboring nations, is considered a secular state. They truly have a separation between church and state and this has enabled it to make significant progress on GLBT issues/rights. In fact, it was the first Latin American country to legalize same and different sex civil unions at a national level in the year 2007.

While Florida and most of the USA still languishes in the past!

    • There are many children in the U.S.A. that need homes and many gay/lesbian couples more than willing to adopt.

It is sad that we cannot adopt children from our own country, yet we can go to Uruguay and adopt one of their needy children.

I know laws differ from state to state, but really….why should it matter. I am in a loving relationship and have a stable home and job. I can more than afford a child and I should be able to adopt if it is in the best interest of the child.

Unless Children’s homes and foster parenting is in the best interest of the child, making them feel unwanted and alone.

      Kudos to Uruguay!
