Without taking any particular view on the merits of the housing idea itself (there are decent arguments on both sides)... something still needs to be done about the hate reflected in the *fact that these groups attacked the idea on a homophobic basis*.

I liked the vote-with-your-wallet comment. Continuing in that direction, how'zabout we convince the fundies to remove every single computer from campus - seeing as how most modern computing technology derives from work by the famously gay Alan Turing. Let's see how much edumacation happens THEN. ;)

I don’t know about the rest of the gay population, but what I want is acceptance and assimilation. I don’t want ‘separate but equal’ quarters. Lord.. it sounds like a throwback to Alabama circa 1951. These people are going to have face ‘life’ sometimes and what better way to get you prepared for the real world than college? I was out at TCU (class of '99)and very visible (cheerleading) and I promise you… NOT ONCE was I ever (that I know of) discriminated against. No one ever said anything demeaning to me because I was gay. I would like to think that the reason that this never happened was because I made the effort to assimilate, not to segregate.

I had a lot of friends and was active in many groups. How in the world are people going to ‘accept’ us when we hide in our little safe havens? I am all for differences, but sometimes diversity (which means to divide) goes too far and I feel that this will damage these gay and lesbian students more than it will help them. Just being yourself around the mainstream is the best form of education that anyone can have. I 100% guarantee that in my professional life, I have changed the minds of many many people regarding what ‘gay’ is supposed to be and what it really is. They have this predetermined idea about it, and then.. they meet me and say.. “hum…. Well Kyle is gay… he is normal, the only thing really different is that he has a boyfriend. He wants the same things in life as I do”… and walla.. people minds are changed without them really realizing it. This is the best way of ‘demanding rights’ because it is done subtly and not by providing separate living quarters.. because all this will do is confirm that being gay is a big deal and it deserves special attention. The less of a deal you make it… the less of a deal it is to people.

Nothing in life comes easy. If you figure out how to persevere in the face of ‘adversity’ at a young age, then you will be all the more prepared to face life in the future.. especially when there isn’t a gay lesbian neighborhood to hide behind.

At least they have LGBT students to begin with. Schools like Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, do not even allow gays to be part of the student body. Besides, is isolation a policy that should be pursued?

The more things change, the more they remain the same. In the 60s, I got my B.A. from T.C.&U. (a tongue-in-cheek nickname employed by a fellow alumnus that makes sense somehow). I headed up a campus film series that allowed a bullying city attorney to put pressure on me to drop from the series a popular foreign movie because one sequence had a brief rape scene that was crucial to understanding the plot.

We went ahead and showed the movie with a short statement to the audience to the effect that they would not be seeing the entire film, thanks to the local censor board (comprised of the widows of police and firemen killed in the line of duty). When the offending sequence came on, I simply cupped the projector lens.

Ironically, the audience could hear the poor maiden's cries of pain throughout, creating in their minds images far more graphic than what was occluded.

The film in question? Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring. A further irony was presented a year later when the local PBS TV station ran the film in its entirely for all of Fort Worth to see.

A campus dormitory for LGBT students? Ha! Maybe when their Christian hell freezes over.

Allan, making blanket generalizations about a good 90%+ of the population doesn't make you any better than the people you loathe.

I also think these special housing arrangements are a bad idea because it's voluntary segregation. College is supposed to be a time to open yourself to new and different ideas and people than what you're used to, so students should make an effort to get to know their peers, gay or straight.

Student housing by themes? This must have come from the Office of People with Absolutely Nothing to Do, in the Department of Ridiculous Proposals. Hilarious!

I didn't like the idea of separate housing anyway.
At least the Christian crazies didn't want to throw out all the gay students. In some schools students can be thrown out just for being LGBT

I'm also a Disciples of Christ church member, but we are located in Beaumont, TX. My pastor's daughter attends TCU. Both the church and the school are inclusive, as compared to many other southern institutions. Just like anything else, though, the body is made of individuals...In my church, I'd say 95% of the congregation knows that my partner and I are gay (she was raised in the church). Of that 95%, only one person has acted negatively towards us.
