(New York City) The trial has begun for the alleged killer of a 20-year-old gay Brooklyn man, who was murdered because another man thought he was flirting with him.
Omar Willock, 19, is charged with stabbing Robert Duncanson to death on May 12, 2007. If convicted of murder as a hate crime, he could be sentenced to life in prison. The prosecution alleges that as the two men passed one another on S.t Marks Ave., Willock began yelling homophobic epithets at Duncanson, after he thought Duncanson had looked at him in way he thought was sexually provocative.
Willock is alleged to have followed Duncanson as he walked to his cousin’s home and waited for him to emerge. He then began following Duncanson again. An argument ensued and Willock is alleged to have pulled a knife and stabbed the man four times.
Duncanson died in the hospital.
Willock has been in custody since his arrest.
Duncanson was out to coworkers, but not to his family. His mother in an interview shortly after his death said that he was a loving son who “had the heart of a lion.”
Coworker Sara Perry described Duncanson as “a very optimistic person, too. He always put a smile on your face.”

When I was a child growing up, if a Black man did not avert his eyes when a White woman walked by that Black man very often was set upon by angry White men and then savagely beaten or even killed. If you haven’t read “To Kill a Mocking Bird” do so, because that is the way it was in the 1950 and early 60s in many places in America.
Gay men are attacked by “straight” men very often for similarly irrational allegations. More often that not, as in the case with Black men and White women, the over-the-top reaction is just an excuse to do violence to another human being — which some miscreants feel they must do in order to compensate for their own inadequacies as men. The alleged “flirtations” are often fictitious, but when they are not, they are frequently elevated to an exaggerated threat that speaks more about the mental instability of the offended than it does to the so-called offender.
Ironic isn’t that we haven’t really changed so very much? Similar villains, just different prey. This is the same insecure, violent mob of misanthropes which organized religion and right-wing politicians breed like pit bulls. To that end, they later cash in on them by exploiting these mindless, vicious mongrels for both profit and political advancement.
There shall never be peace in the world as long as brutality remains a rite of passage into manhood and religion is thought of as an acceptable substitute for reason. Those two things will ultimately destroy all of humankind unless they are unequivocally renounced.

It’s NOT okay to kill someone for looking at you. It is okay to get upset if someone is oogling you inappropriately. Women are subjected to this type of agression all the time – we would have a significant impact to the number of straight men in America should the violent response be seen as appropriate.
Mr. Willock put a lot of effort into following his prey. Very sad. I agree
with Sam. Our legislators need to rise above the fear of religion and give our minority the rights we deserve. Every
time a Hate based law gets passed it is giving these people implied permission.
Like Prop H8, and recent anti adoption laws. All of the silly man / woman marriage amendments to state constitutions.

If women murdered every guy who “looked at them” there wouldn’t be many men left ….. only the Gay ones.
Sam is absolutely right. The religio-crazies with their crusades of hate and intolerance have created a social climate where unstable people feel that we, and other minorities, are fair game. It is no different that what the Nazi’s did to the Jews in pre WW II Germany …. they demonized them, and predatory mobs attacked.
We are living in perilous times, with the economy tanking, and financial desperation increasing ….. a ripe environment for the hate merchants looking for scapegoats to vent on. Watch your back. Organize, organize, organize.
Omar Willock, may have stabbed the victim, but organized religions, are his accomplices, aiding and abetting him and all other perpetrators of gay hate crimes of brutal beatings and murder, is without doubt
One of the many purposes of religious institutions is to promote hate, fear, and intolerance, they demand complete control of all their members thoughts, and demand full submission.
All religions that speak of and condone the teaching that any human being or group of people are less than they are, or portray other people as evil, wicked, immoral, etc. are totally complicit in the beatings and murder of gay victims, guns and knives don’t have minds of their own, they don’t do the killing, the words that provoke the actions of the perpetrator do, look at the holocaust.
Don’t like perceived same-sex come-ons, just say “SORRY, I AM STRAIGHT, I AM NOT YOUR TYPE AND STOP STARING AT ME LIKE THAT”. and just walk away. It’s OK to firmly say NO to anything you don’t want.
