The New York Blade suspends publication

(New York) The bi-weekly gay newspaper the New York Blade has suspended publication and laid off its editor in chief reports the New York Times.

Matthew Bank, the chief executive of HX media, the company that owned the Blade, made the announcement Wednesday. The closing of the newspaper coincides with the selling of HX Magazine, the gay bar weekly HX Media also owned, to undisclosed buyers.

“Everyone was let go, but the people on The Blade know that they may come back if The Blade is coming back,” Bank told the Times.

Bank said the next issue of the free bi-weekly newspaper is scheduled to come out a week from Friday.

    • Hey Trace:

Have you been asleep during the past 8 years? Cause it was George Bush who spent the surplus, increased the deficit and increase spending on a war we have no business being in. Nice try to blame Obama for the last eight years… but I agree thank you george bush you @

    • Snuffer, maybe you’ve missed Obama’s last 200 days. He’s increased spending more than will be able to be paid off in generations. If you can find a bright point, it’s that hopefully this will only encourage more to make this man a 1 term President.

    • However trace, Obama brought the economy out of tailspin within the first months of his administration while Georgie boy did as he always does: he dithered away endlessly for months, refusing to make any difficult decisions.

    • Hey Michael – just to clear up something on “environmentalists” and the paper/trees/global warming issue – any eco-warrior worth his salt these days is in favour of big libraries and lots of trees being made into paper (as long as the logged trees are replaced by new plantings.) That’s because carbon locked up in paper and libraries isn’t carbon dioxide escaping into the air as a greenhouse gas. Trees are good, but so is lots and lots of paper – as long as we preserve it as paper, and don’t let it biodegrade. Totally off-topic, I know (I’m a Johannesburger, so I never got to read NY Blade) – but now that more and more responsible souls are getting environmentally active, more an more misperceptions are popping up. Sorry if anyone thinks I’m a pedant…

    • How Bizarre. How does news of a newspaper closing turn into a Bush/Obama rant? Print media everywhere has been on the ropes for years – long before any economic downturn. It’s not because of the national debt or a war or either presidents policies.

People simply don’t read print media any more.
