Teen in Lawrence King murder: competent to stand trial

(Oxnard, California) The 14-year old boy accused of killing openly gay teen Larry King has been found competent to stand trial.

Judge Kevin McGee made the determination Monday after hearing from a court appointed psychiatrist and a psychologist.

Brandon McInerney is charged with murder as a hate crime and is being tried as an adult. If convicted he could be sentenced to 51 years to life.

His attorneys sought to have the youth declared developmentally incapable of standing trial.

If, McInerney had been found not competent he would be sent to a mental health facility – likely Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino – where he would be treated and held until he was deemed able to stand trial.

McGee ordered a preliminary hearing to begin January 26.

King, 15, often dressed in a feminine manner and told friends that he was gay. He was shot in the head during a morning class at an Oxnard school in February. More than 20 other students were in the room at the time. McInerney was arrested shortly after the shooting.

King died in hospital after doctors declared him brain dead and his mother agreed to have life-support removed.

In October Deputy District Attorney Maeve Fox said that white supremacist materials had been found by investigators in McInerney’s bedroom.

“They included hand-drawn sketches of swastikas, references to the 14 Words’ and the number 88, which is commonly used by skinheads to represent the words Heil Hitler and Hitler’s SS,” Fox said in a court filing.

King was honored earlier this year at schools across the country as part of the National Day of Silence.

    • Throughout the animal kingdom aggression and competition defines male sexual behavior. It is a deadly serious area of natural behavior. The sexual identity of heterosexual males is ultimately the most important aspect of their existence. The threatening or compromising of this identity is the single and only cause of violence against male homosexuals by male heterosexuals.

    • We can lay this tragedy also at the feet of those who claim to speak for God in rejecting gay people, and also are so vocal about “supporting life”

Hypocrisy, thy real name is “God fearing”. But just as you can’t scream fire in a crowded theatre without legal repercussion, we need laws that punish people who encourage the hatred that gay people endure, that leads to murder.

Something about co-conspirators before the fact – just as guilty as the perpetrators.

And when they bitch about it, wonder what they would say if they were threatened by some mad Islamic preacher preaching murder of Christians in a Mosque next door to their church. Do you think they would talk about the Islamics right to religious freedom?

    • Let’s hope his attorneys don’t pull the Twinkie Defense.

    • Out of excuses and with so many witnesses he would be better off pleading guilty and accepting his punishment like a man. Not that this will happen, but its a waste of taxpayer’s money. Maybe he will get lucky tho and get the same jury that acquitted O.J. in his wife’s murder. 2 bullets – $1.50, One pointless trial – $100K +, keeping him in prison for the next 50 years $2.5 million, the look on his face after getting raped for the next 51 years – priceless.

    • This would be a good article for Mr. Whithers to read. Perhaps he will change his mind about holding black homophobia accountable?
