Teen arrested in WABC reporter’s murder

(New York City) New York City Police say a teenager is in custody in the brutal slaying of veteran New York City radio reporter George Weber.

Weber’s body was found Sunday. His ankles were bound, and he was stabbed about 50 times. Wounds on his hands indicate he tried to fight back.

The 16-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday night in Middletown, N.Y.. His identity is being withheld until formal charges are filed.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the teen “made statements implicating himself” in Weber’s death.

Browne said that Weber apparently allowed the teen into his Brooklyn home after they met through Craigslist.

Local media in New York say that Weber had placed an ad on Craigslist looking for “rough sex” with a Hispanic man.

Long Island newspaper Newsday, quoting unnamed police sources, reported that the teen told investigators he saw it as an easy way to make money for smothering someone and engaging in other forms of rough sex.

Gay porn was reportedly strewn about the home.

The teen allegedly tried to clean up after the killing, then turned on the water taps throughout the home before fleeing.

Weber worked at WABC in New York for 12 years as the on-air reporter for popular shows such as “Curtis and Kuby.” He also had worked at stations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver and Pennsylvania.

    • The murder is most certainly never justified, but hopefully ppl take a lesson from this and stop putting themselves in these risky situations. What business did this guy have soliciting a 16yo old boy for rough sex? btw- the boy has videos up on youtube still and he is greek, not hispanic.

    • These comments totally ignore a very real and serious issue regarding on-line dating and “hooking-up”. The gay community needs to refocus its efforts on keeping us safe from EACH OTHER just as much as straight people. I know many people that have been injured and beaten by gay guys they met on the net.

There is nothing wrong with wanting companionship (read:sex) but we, just like straights, have people within our community that want to harm us. In NYC, organizations like The anti-violence project are good for taking money but dont do much to warn and educate about true life cyber crimes. Over all gays have high numbers of domestic violence and abuse that go unrecored because of gay history with police, shame, embarrasment and other issues that are common in abuse cases. These numbers, and reasons, increase when the perp is a gay guy you met as a hook-up.

We need to report these crimes, not protect gays that harm other gays and stop accepting violence as a natural possibility to getting laid.

No, the 16 year old killer is NOT Latino! He IS Greek.

    • Tiger Tzu,

Well if anyone tries to defend this murderer, either by religious rights or hispanic people, then they are justifying murder with a smack on the butt. I don’t care if he is 16, he knew what he did was wrong. I just can’t accept that he is a child.

Really, now, when do kids learn right from wrong? They learn it in early childhood, ages 2-4. I just don’t want everyone to think “poor kid”, he didn’t know what he was doing. That is just a bald face lie.

How many times is this going to occur, before we start lobbying for laws that require legislation to protect everyone?

    • I can’t wait until the calls for mercy and compassion for this murderer start.
