If you ignore for a moment that the main theme of the show is a metaphor for the gay community's attempts to assimilate, the show features MANY heterosexual characters and one gay guy. And the gay guy is not stereotypical, placed in a neutered "silly side kick" role, or sanitized for mass consumption (he's as messy and imperfect as the rest of the characters on the show). It's a really good gay depiction. (Not to mention that there aren't enough depictions of LBGT people of color in mainstream media, anyway. The character is African American.)
