Not wanting to promote a division between Catholics & Protestants, & I am sure Sotomayor would make a great judge on the Supreme court.
However I find it amazing that a Protestant majority country can have such a complete imbalance on it's Supreme Court.
To have 6 out of 9 being Catholic, 2 Jews, & only 1 Protestant is astounding.
One would hope that there continues to be a seperation of Church & State, however when marriage is denied to GLBT people this argument is proved to be incorrect.
I am surprised that more people are not concerned about a Catholic 2/3 majority of the Supreme Court.

I don't think Sotomayor would have any ideological similarities with the likes of Scalia, Alito, Roberts and Thomas. Given her back ground and where she currently lives (The West Village) she is more likely to be progressive and open to gay rights.

Not all Catholics follow the church's doctrine, we are not a monolith. I identify myself as Catholic but I disagree with a lot of the polices of the church and the socially conservative quacks that is its hierarchy.

We DO NOT need more pope-puppets on this court.

Let her tell us truthfully she will not vote the pope's will, as the others have repeatedly.

We were fooled into thinking Roberts wouldn't be all that bad until the pope told him how to vote in the first abortion case he heard, a horribly wrongly decided case that pits man's superiority of character, in their minds, against a woman's life and/or health.

the catholic court disgusts me and unless she can say she is not one, she is not a valid candidate for this life appointment.

Yeh. I think it was Scalia who issued a stinging disent in the case where police invaded a gay persons home in TX, and arrested two men for Sodomy, a biblical sin.

I've met well over a dozen times with a perfectly nice catholic guy, for stinging debates re gay equality. I am absolutely amazed at how the church can create people who seem so nice at first glance, but who follow the church hook, line and sinker eg re gay rights. He doesn't even realize that he would turn gay people into pariahs and untouchables.

Just as the same church did re Jews in Europe for a century. And gave hitler - a catholic - the 'hate lever' that he combined with anxiety over complete world wide economic collapse from the first great republican depression, to take over Germany.

And you know the result.

Seig Heil, Meine ChurchFuhrer Razi, born and brought up in Germany's nazi era.

You and your pals in the hierarchy will not need warm clothes when you arrive in your next world.

And yes I know there are lots of good priests who would like to move the church forward on this issue. Look at eg New Ways Ministry, and Dignity USA.

But to be open about it could end their career.

At least probably not the way the progressive priests of the `1400s-1500s had their careers ended. By being tortured and burned to death by the Inquistion.

Re the nominee, I think she is progressive, but we will see. What matters most of all is maintaining, and moving the court forward to a more progressive era, now that Satan himself does not sit in the Oval Office.

It'd be interesting to see SCOTUS try a case against the Catholic Church--is intimidation of Catholic lawmakers and judges to follow church doctrine in the public sphere an acceptable action? Hmmm.

Yeah - and when they threaten to "ex-communicate" her because she is not pushing the "catholic agenda"?

I haven't heard a single word about her in terms of GLBT issues, even less than anything from Obama (which is pretty much all he has for GLBT folks these days - sadly).

Does anyone know of her views on GLBT rites?
