Showdown expected in Nevada over partner bill
05.19.2009 2:00pm EDT
(Carson City, Nevada) Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons is warning the legislature not to bother sending him a bill that would allow same and opposite-sex couples to register as domestic partners and receive many of same rights as married couples have in the state.
The bill, working its way through the legislature, is expected to pass later this week. But Gibbons has reiterated his threat to veto the measure when it reaches his desk. The governor said that domestic partnerships are essentially the same as marriage and state law limits marriage to opposite-sex couples. In 2002, voters approved a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.
The bill, however, makes it clear that domestic partnerships does not equal marriage.
The bill states domestic partners would have the “same rights, protections, benefits, responsibilities, obligations and duties” as traditionally married couples and be subject to the same divorce laws, such as those involving community property.
The bill also has been amended to state that public sector employers would not be required to provide health care benefits to employees’ partners. It does not block similar benefits from being provided in the private sector.
It would allow same-sex couples to register their relationships with the secretary of state’s office.
The bill was written by Sen. David Parks, an openly gay Las Vegas Democrat.
Republicans have opposed the bill throughout its movement in the legislature. It is doubtful Democrats could muster enough votes to override a veto.
A public opinion poll released Tuesday by The Las Vegas Review-Journal found that 38 percent of Nevadans favor domestic partner legislation, while 50 percent oppose it and the remainder are undecided.
Broken down by party support, the poll found that those who said they were Democrats back partnerships by a 46 percent to 36 percent margin, while independents support it 47 percent to 42 percent.
Nevertheless, Republicans oppose the proposal by a 71 percent to 23 percent margin, more than off-setting the Democrat and independent support.

What the hell REPUBLICANS want? Our Blood?
O no, thats right, most that I have encountered think that all Gay people are HIV positive, so they don’t even want me blood…
They want us to just shut up and take their discrimination and their abuse. FINE, We’ll keep outting all the Larry Craigs and Ted Haggards and such out there!
Remember what happened in Vermont when the Republican governor threatened a veto? We got a few converts and were able to pass marriage equality with a veto-proof majority.
The Democrats in Nevada need to buck up. Get behind this thing and teach that hypocritical governor a thing or two.

Time to boycott Vegas — Britney Spears can get married to drunken boytoy by an Elvis impersonator, in a state that has legalized prostitution, but I’m a threat to family values??
I think we need to let the Nevada gaming and hotel industries know that we don’t want to spend our money in Vegas. Maybe they could work on the legislature.
Boyvott Vegas! Bring that governor to his knees (only not in a mensroom with an idaho senator for a change)!!!
“Isn’t prostitution legal in Nevada?”
No – only in certain designated counties – and under strict state control. It is illegal in almost every city.
And Yes, Nevada would make an EXCELLENT boyott target – especially now when its economy is already reeling.
I agree; the more me as a community come together and withold our pink dollars from States, Companies, Political Parties, and people that trample on our equality and freedom the better off we’ll be. What does Nevada have that we can’t get somewhere else that actually supports equality? Vegas??? Please…they are sooooo ungay, the nightlife is totally not directed towards us…it sucks!!!!!
Gibbons is also a Mormon – there’s a ton of them in Las Vegas because of big families and cheap housing. You’d think that in “Sin City” he’d be able to find some family values problems a little nearer home than gay domestic partnerships.
Why aren’t gay groups boycotting Las Vegas? This douche bag is going out of his way to hurt gay people. Perhaps if 5% of the population didn’t go to Vegas, he might get the message.
Gibbons is such a hypocrite…. this from the man who was having an affair and ended up in a very nasty and public divorce. So much for protecting marriage !
Maybe we should boycott Nevada! Money talks and the last time I checked the gay community has one or two bucks.
Wait a minute. Isn’t prostitution legal in Nevada?
Family values for sure.
Nevada is very dependent on tourism, and would make a very good boycott target. It will be interesting to see how the Mormons and Catholics explain their objections to same-sex marriage in a state that legalizes prostitution and gambling.
Gibbons is all worked up about this so he can use it as a distraction. Nevada is a mess, and any fool could’ve foreseen the day when Nevada couldn’t pay its bills with gambling, tourism and construction. What does it tell you when the Nevada Legislature eliminates funding for outpatient cancer care, but the governor is more concerned with stopping gays from any recognition of their relationships?
At 21% approval, Gibbons is less popular than gay marriage in Nevada.
