SF police probe more hate crime BB-gun shootings

(San Francisco) Prosecutors who have charged three cousins with a hate crime for shooting a San Francisco man with a BB gun because they thought he was gay said Friday they’re considering charging the suspects in 11 similar shootings.

A video recording recovered by police from a car belonging to Mohammad Habibzada, 24, and Shafiq Hashemi and Sayed Bassam, both 21, show the cousins shooting at the other victims, Assistant District Attorney Brian Buckelew said.

No serious injuries have been reported from the 11 additional shootings.

“We’re looking to talk to others who may have been victimized,” Buckelew said.

The cousins from Hayward, Calif., are accused of shooting a 27-year-old man in the cheek as he was smoking outside a bar in San Francisco’s Mission district on Feb. 26.

The victim called police and said he’d been shot by a passing car. Police pulled the suspects over as the cousins drove by the bar a second time as officers were interviewing the victim.

Police allegedly found a “rifle-style” BB gun and a video camera inside the car. Investigators later discovered a recording of the shooting on the camera, police said.

“They basically stated to officers that they came to San Francisco to target gay people,” police spokesman Samson Chan said.

The cousins have been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with a hate crime enhancement discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and attempted mayhem for the initial shooting.

They are in custody after a judge granted prosecutors’ request Friday to raise the suspects’ bail to $450,000 each, pending the new charges, which are expected to be filed in the next couple weeks.

    • Islam.. the religion of peace ???

    • have a nice day, how do you know they are Islamic? or anything else? You are just assuming. And how do you know their origins and their motivations other than what they allegedly stated to the police?
You are just assuming it to be religion when you just don’t know.

From my point of view, all that matters is that they committed a crime, they terrorized a man and they should be in jail. They provided their own evidence via camera. If not American, they should be deported. Here again, we don’t know if they were born in this country or became citizens of our country. We are just making more assumptions because the story says nothing about their national origins, or anything else except what there are alledged to have done.

And we know that boys or young men with white skin have from time to gone to town in any city to target gay men.

People of any race, national origin and motivation, creed or no creed are possible antigay bigots or bullies looking to target gay men, so assumptions and stereotypes fall flat these days.

    • Morgan, its very nice of you to be politically correct.. But if you knew anything about the Muslim religion, you would know that Hatred and killing of gays is a cultural and a religious teaching a belief( in the Koran) not a stereotype. Their is a big difference between stereotypes and the truth. All of their names are Muslim names.. Watch whats happening all over th world and whats being preached by Muslims scholars and sheiks and you will see that its not a stereotype.Just like they believe that a man is above the woman in law and again in the Koran( see if theres any respect for woman’s rights in the middle eastern Muslim countries) and they also believe that their ultimate goal is to make all nations Islamic one day.. I advise that you do your homework and you will learn the same.

    • “I advise that you do your homework and you will learn the same.:

You might want to do some homework your own self. Bernard Lewis, a scholar of note, disagrees with most of your pap. He notes there is more than one tradition in Islam. He is also a critic of those who use the faith to kill.

    • James My Friend.. theres always an exception to the rule.. but its just that an exception. majority tends to rule and it is.

  • 00HaveAniceDay00 Said: March 15th, 2010 at 2:28 pm
    • So basically the majority of Muslim Scholars and Sheiks would disagree with Mr. lewis.

    • I’ll keep this in mind when someone stereotypes about gays and lesbians, uses your logic, and you whine something about homophobia.

      Be well.

    • James.. Gays and lesbians come in all kinds of shapes, religions, non religious colors and sizes etc, just like heterosexual people.. but people who practice the same religion tend to have the same beliefs and attitudes about certain aspects of life because their religions tells them to do this. Its not a stereotype.. its just who they are.. unfortunately and sadly.. many of these people do not know any better and are genuinely good people who can’t escape what they have been brainwashed to believe because they fear its a contradiction to their faith

    • Those who assume that this violence is based on rightwing islamist bigotry are likely right.

However, the rancid racism of islamophobes is not the way to defend ourselves from islamist cult violence.

Iran is a perfect example. Islamophobes are widely quoted to build up support for the killer ayatollahs, whose government would otherwise be in much greater trouble.

      Islamphobia is racism.

    • Think whatever you like, folks, but IMO, they did not learn to go out to hunt gays by being taught a religion of peace.

  • 00HaveAniceDay00 Said: March 16th, 2010 at 8:34 am
    • Understanding and knowing what the majority of Islam teaches is not islamphopbia.. how can it possibly be when the Majority of Sheiks and Muslim scholars will proudly state their views of intolerance, opposition to gays and women’s rights etc..Many of these people have been quoted as saying gays should be killed in their countries on their national TV’s and mosques. This is very loud clear, no shame in their game, .. why is it ok to bash the Pope when he preaches against homosexuality but Americans feel a need to defend Islam when their feelings and actions towards homosexuality are loud and clear and more violent?
Yes, not all people who are Muslim feel this way but the majority of Islam teachings have the same fundamental beliefs. ( look at any Muslim Middle Eastern country and see their status on Human rights/gay rights etc..)
We need to stop with the Political correctness.. it is what it is

  • DJAlexander89 Said: March 18th, 2010 at 7:49 pm
    • Screw all this anti-religion sentiment. There are atheists that are homo haters so get over it. Islam is a very peaceful religion you racist commentator. You’re just like those who looked at the name Barrack Obama and automatically assume he must be a muslim. DUMBASS!!! He is the only president I have ever seen that’s even close to what our community has been needing.
