I am close to tears of joy over this news! Over the last five years I've given up everything and gone deep into debt trying to be with my partner in Peru. I spend a year living in that horribly depressing country and came back only to finish my Master's degree and study French as part of my effort to emigrate to Canada, where we could be legally married. But given my depleted finances that effort seems almost out of reach. Thank God for Obama!

Mr. Coffee, thanks for the contact information on Sen. Leahy. I sent a fax to him and will follow this up with a hard-cover letter. I also am going to write my senators and rep. on this, though obviously it is early and they perhaps will forget it by then.

I feel that the UAFA is going to hinder Marriage Equality, which is the real issue at hand. If Marriage Equality were given nation-wide these immigration issues would not exist.
It's also unfair to not offer the same immigration opportunities to opposite-sex couples who chose not to marry.

DOMA has nothing to do with this bill, this bill just adds the words "or permanent partner" to current immigration law allowing same sex bi-national couples to sponsor their partners for immigration.

I certainly agree with those who wrote here. I also live out of country, in Thailand during the winter. I don't know if my boyfriend would want to live in the USA, but he certainly would like to visit. As I understand it, it is damn hard to even get a visa to enter the country without documentation of wealth and certain reason to return to their country. When I was 25 I was able to travel throughout Europe with a backpack and did not have a problem. The USA makes it so difficult to enter the country. I can't even find the list of steps one must take to get a visa through their website, unless I want to pay for a packet. Thailand has all steps and copies of documents online. Why can't we do this?

As a mother of a gay son who has the most
wonderful partner/husband in California,I
would love to see this hearing on "gay
immigration equality" take hold. My son-in-law (loosly put) is from Columbia and
our son would also have to leave us, their new home, his job if he was not able to stay in this country. I am so thankful that maybe all of our fears can
be put to rest.
