While I certainly appreciate the view expressed in response to this article, abstinence need not be an entirely religious or prudish notion. I did not wait until I was married before I had sex. I lost my virginity when I was thirteen and had numerous sexual experiences before I met my current partner. My partner, on the other hand, waited until we were “married” (not in the legal or religious sense, but in the sense that matters and the only sense in which marriage was available to us), and in retrospect I wish I had waited.

Abstinence should be presented as an option in any sex education class, and both the religious and philosophical reasons for it should be presented to young people to help them make the decision that’s best for them.

There is nothing wrong with waiting until marriage, or until you meet your life partner, before you have sex. There is nothing wrong with not waiting. The only thing that’s really wrong is religious groups and individuals using their opinions on sex and sexuality to shame and hurt young people.

And if you are going to provide children with sex education and present abstinence as an option, you should provide them with a comprehensive education about sex, including same-sex relations.

sorry, I said i was done. Reading the comments I feel better. At least WE are whitty, insightful and not as dumb as the average human. Could it be people hate us because they perceive us to be superior?????

Seriously, sex before marriage should be encouraged! I forgot where I read it but there was a study that showed lots of sexual activity in teen years led to healthier, more balanced and succesful adults. (it worked for me, I was a pig!).

You have to first accept evolution, which these dorks do not, then just think through it. Lots of sex, lots of gene dispersion, lots of diversity in the gene pool..good for human evolution.

Now in our society some ill effects, mainly teen pregnancy and STD’s…but that doesn’t negate the mental health that arises from high sexual activity as that is what we are evolved to crave and be satisfied by.

Its really simple: get over the sex taboo, stop making women cover themselves and stop making young boys embarrassed about growing hair and having boners in the locker room. Let humans develop their sexuality freely and we’d all be healthier.

Won’t happen under the theocracy these wing nuts think we have, but for this sex fiend, it certainly makes tons of sense.

funny how bigots always seem to correlate with delusion. Religion, facts, all sorts of delusion. All studies show this does not work. Whether his priest wants him to push this or he has something to hide I come to the same conclusion: what a coincidence (not) that all these people filled with hate and fear of others make decisions in complete irreverance to the facts.

Humans need to evolve beyond belief. I think they’ve dumbed down the thinking part of their brains so much to believe in fairy tales that it causes them to continue to push things that do not work.

Senator kerry..from very liberal Mass (I’m told its liberal here anyway) got an ammendment on the healthcare bill requiring insurance policies to cover faith healing if the IRS allows them to be deducted.

Senator Kerry! This isn’t some crazy that we’d expect to be pushing religion. guess what? christian scientists are based in Boston, and they are the only cult allowed by the IRS to provide tax deductible healing services.

In this case it seems the need for votes is causing delusion. I can’t believe our senator supports this. But then again, it is senator goldigger/heinz isn’t it?

Time for me to go home…this news is depressing. One story after another about how stupid humans can be when pushing ideology, gunning for votes and ignoring evidence.

And we rule the world. The poor animals.

Ironically, even the former Republican Vice-Presidential candidate did not abstain until marriage. Yup, that’s right, Mrs. Palin was preggers when she got married. (Or, should I say “married”?) Nor, for that matter did her daughter. Guess this abstinence until marriage doesn’t even work for betterosexuals, let alone us kweerz, eh?

There are unemployed or underemployed Americans suffering all over the country, and 12 Senators voted to waste $50 million a year for 5 years on this program based primarily on what I would guess are their PERSONAL religious beliefs. Hard to believe that they are representing the people of their state. GET OUT AND VOTE these clowns out of office.

All they taught about when those programs were up were straight sex, and since they don’t tech about gay sex now, reinstating these programs would focus all attention on straight sex. goal here is to get everyone to ignore gays and focus everything on straight sex so that none has to talk about gays.

The issue isn’t about sex. The GOP doesn’t give a rats ass about sex. They’re rampant in their sexually perverted deeds. It’s about control and energizing their right-wing extremist base. And, it works.

They KNOW that kids will have sex no matter what. and then they blame Liberals for the pregnancies because they couldn’t impose their rules on everyone.

It has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with the fight surrounding it. People need to really pay attention to what republicans DO and NOT what they SAY. Very, very few of their arguments are about what they appear and have EVERYTHING to do about how they present themselves as victims of the Liberal agenda.

flanjoe, this bill only addresses straights. Doesn’t apply to us because we’re insignificant.

This is yet another mechanism to get government more involved with marriage which it is anyway when it confers more than one thousand to straight married couples only.

To claim that government doesn’t get involved with marriage is baloney. Don’t buy into it, it just isn’t true. If states issue marriage licenses then its clear state government too gets involved.
