Sen. Hatch wants abstinence-until-marriage programs back

The Advocate reported that anti-gay Senator Orrin Hatch wants to reinstate funding for the Title V abstinence-only-until-marriage programs.

The Bush Administration implemented this form of sex-education during his presidency but the federal funding was cut earlier this year by the Obama administration.

According to National Sexuality Resource Center (NSRC), the Senate Finance Committee passed the amendment from Senator Orrin Hatch two weeks ago to reinstate $50 million per year over the course of five years into the program.

The amendment passed in a 12–11 vote.

The NSRC has advised sex-ed supports to call into their Senate office to ensure that Congress does not fund the abstinence-until-marriage programs.

    • I have no objection to abstinence-until-marriage programs – just give gays the right to marry first so that they can have a marriage to abstain until.

    • Just like ALL religouse propaganda great teach in your church’s. The are ample private schools if you want it taught at school. Public schools are facing MAJOR problems. In oregon the hours in class DONT met fed standards already. They only got time to TEACH FACTS & make believe has NO PLACE!

    • this is a great idea, but ummm. . . how can we abstain until marriage if we can’t marry?

    • Well, lets just be realistic. Teen pregnancy rates are skyrocketing in the south because of the bible belts religous notion that abstinence is your only option if you wish to make it to the pearly gates.

    • Inasmuch as the Mor(m)on Senator is in the minority, he could not “ram through” the amendment. He had to have the aid of some Democrats in addition to the Republicans on the committee.

    • Oh Please! If any Liberal or Progressive were to propose this item, the Conservatives would brand it “Social Engineering!”. What’s the per student success rate vs. per student budget buster? Sorry Orin, this bird don’t fly.

    • Well since the average kid enters puberty around 11 or 12 and probably won’t get married until they are in their 30’s if current trends continue, telling them to abstain for 20+ years is asking a bit much.

    • Just one more failed program to keep on the refuse pile of failed GOP ideas.

    • Before the Senator gets all hyped up about abstinence and sexual regulation rather than sexual responsibility he may want to take a look at what is in the food of what teens and all of eat on a daily basis: growth hormones and other substances which adversly affect hormonal balnces in the body and cause them to have a more heightened libido and some even go into puberty earlier because of it. You know it is like telling someone to drive on the interstate and they have no clue about driving at all. They are dead before they start the engine. Wake up man. wake up

    • I thought President Obama was a spendthrift, and that the Dems were spending all kinds of money we don’t have. $1.4 trillion deficit this year alone…but somehow the good Republican Mormon Senator is PERFECTLY WILLING to add another $50 mil to the pile. What’s that smell? It’s bullshit.

    • What a STUPID and RIDICULOUS waste of money. Orrin Hatch and these other conservative Republicans need to get lives and stop pushing their right-wing religious agenda down people’s throats.

People will have sex before marriage regardless of how much about abstinence they’re taught. Just ask Bristol Palin.
What a waste of tax payer money.

    • What about when 5-10 boys rape 15 y/o girls for two hours outdoors, and NO ONE COMPLAINS in this country! See Richmond CA News.

    • I don’t know from politics and budgets and all that hard stuff. All I know is that, on Glee, Quinn Fabray was president of the chastity club and now she’s pregnant anyway, even though the father isn’t Finn Hudson who thinks he impregnated her by having a premature ejaculation in her hot tub.

So that right there goes to show you that chastity programs don’t work. Or, ask the Jonas brothers.

    • I am not sure I quite get it. Senator Hatch is OK with the Federal Government persuading people not to have sex before marriage, but he thinks it is too intrusive for the Federal Government to pass health care reform, specifically the public option. Huh?
