Schwarzenegger vetoes Harvey Milk bill
10.01.2008 8:47am EDT
(Sacramento, California) Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed a bill honoring slain LGBT civil rights pioneer Harvey Milk by marking his birthday.
The bill, authored by Assemblymember Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) would have set aside May 22 as Harvey Milk Day, designating it as a ‘day of special significance” in California. It passed the legislature with little difficulty, but the governor in vetoing the bill said that, while he respected the measure’s intent, he thinks Milk’s “contributions should continue to be recognized at the local level.”
May 22 is Milk’s birth date. He would have been 78 this year.
Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977 and shot to death a year later, along with Mayor George Moscone, by fellow supervisor Dan White.
White was convicted of manslaughter, and served a little more than three years in prison before committing suicide.
In the years since his death, Milk has become the most recognizable martyr of the gay rights movement.
Leno said the legislation was written to have no additional impact on the budget, and state workers and school employees would not get the day off from work.
Nevertheless, Republicans and other social conservatives mounted an intensive campaign against it.
In May, a bronze bust of Milk was unveiled at San Francisco City Hall. The bronze sculpture sits atop a stone base inscribed with a quote from one of his most famous speeches.
There already is a sculpture of Moscone outside San Francisco’s City Hall.
Milk has been immortalized in the film “The Life and Times of Harvey Milk”, and a second film, a dramatization of Milk’s life starring Sean Penn and directed by Gus Van Sant, will be released next month.

In response to”AR said:” Schwarzenegger
is a joke in California. He proclaimed in the 70’s,that he would one day become Governor…and eventually,President of the United States! He married Maria Schriver to get his foot in the Political door,he wooed Republican support, and somehow, managed to actually become Governor of California.I do not believe that the people voted him in.I
believe he was placed in that position as the result of shady politics.Oh,Come ON! Was Bush really elected by the voters? The Popular Vote of the People was for Al Gore.
Currently,Schwarzenegger can not be the
President, because of Constitutional Red Tape…but the way our Constitution is being tampered with these days, maybe he
WILL become President one day!
Schwarzenegger will go down in history
as one of the worst Governors EVER!
Well, hopefully there are enough votes in Sacramento to override the Veto.
Come on Californians. Can’t you find anyone decent to be governor of California. Isn’t there a better, more popular actor who wants the job and who believes in equality for all. Arnold is kinda creepy y’all.
Yeah right. And Dr. King should have been honoredn only in southern states too, huh? Please just have the guts to say, “I’m currying favor with antigay bigots.”
… and Arnie should only be recognized on the “film level”. Predictable response. Now where is his supposed support for the defeat of Proposition 8?
I guess the Dakota’s #1 “house-guest” has forgotten who paid his bills when he was a body-builder. NOW, the Governator has his proboscis so far up the dessicated derrieres of the Konservative Kristianist Krazies that he can tell you what they had for breakfast .. a week ago! Can you say “impacted?” There! I knew you could. I don’t know what his game is, unless he plans to run for Senate and needs the Orange Kounty Rethugnantclone machine and money, which they will withhold unless he out-hates other potential candidates. Thank the FOUNDERS he can’t run for Presinator!

Milk is a NATIONAL icon not just a local one. Maybe the the Governor should check out the old and new movie before making a comment or ruling on the day.
Ahnol’ never ceases to meet my expectations. What I can’t understand is how blind all the GLBT folks in CA were to send their votes his way.
His next stop is to target Feinstein or Boxer for the Senate. He’s positioning himself far enough to the Right to be sure he can continue to play both sides of the fence – that is, raise money for both sides.
By the way, I’m still waiting for him to “campaign” against the anti-Gay marriage initiative. I guess he’s waiting to do it AFTER voting day…
Arnold…go back to making bad movies instead of being a bad Governor.
