(Camp Pendleton, Calif.) Authorities say a Navy petty officer charged with murdering a Camp Pendleton sailor killed himself in a brig that was under video surveillance because he’d made two previous suicide attempts.
Jonathan Campos was on suicide watch when he apparently stuffed toilet paper in his mouth and suffocated Friday.Pendleton spokeswoman Maj. Kristen Lasica-Khaner said Monday that a guard visually checked Campos every five minutes as Navy regulations require. However, there may have been a 36-minute gap between physical inspections.
The base is investigating.
Campos was charged with shooting Seaman August Provost on June 30. Family members questioned whether Provost was targeted because he was gay, but the Navy says it has found no evidence of a hate crime.
I guess that soft redneck was not man enough to own up to his actions, but atleast our tax dollars wont be wasted on that trash anymore!

I’d asked this question on another thread, and this isn’t a clear answer. If he was to be checked every five minutes (SP q5 where I work), that sounds like a direct visual check. This article mentions both “video surveillance” and “visual check.” Depending on the configuration, it’s possible you could have several people monitored simultaneously by one person, like several peoples’ vital signs being monitored from the nursing station on a telemetry unit. It’s entirely possible for a person on a q5 to manage a suicidal gesture if they’re determined enough. Usually, if you have a patient or inmate on a q5, you have to document the watch. If it really was a 36-minute gap, that seems pretty hard to explain for a direct visual check, but would make more sense if it was video surveillance and the observer had additional responsibilities. More info needed. Was there video surveillance of the unit or pod where he was held?

Did it occur to anyone here that maybe the reason there wasn’t a hate crime charge was to preserve Provost’s record? Follow me. If there’s no documented conflict point of race/ethnicity (which surely woulda been mentioned by now), then what else would really be there? Gay? Gay could be manipulated into denying benefits to any eligible designee. In a way, denying “gay” could allow for posthumous recognition of Provost’s honorable and valiant service. What we want? Maybe not. Does it satisfy his family? Ask them. If they want more, fight the fight for them. If they’re happy with recognition of him being killed while on duty, then leave it. It’s always individual.

If you dig into why the fundamentalists are like they are, the Catholic church hierarchy (My right wing catholic friend said the church is splitting – HalleluJah) , and the mad fucking ultra orthodox Jews (ps I was Jewish until the killings in Israel the other day – I mean that – Leviticus leaves the bible or I leave) the common thread is people who live by absolute rules.
