Revival of ‘Angels in America’ set for off-B’way

(New York) “Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes” will fly again in New York – off-Broadway.

The mammoth, two-part drama by Tony Kushner will be presented by the Signature Theatre Company during its 2010-2011 season as part of a yearlong celebration of the playwright.

Artistic director James Houghton (HOW’-tuhn) says the play’s two parts, “Millennium Approaches” and “Perestroika” (payr-ehs-TROY’-kuh) will be performed in rep.

No casting was announced, but the play, a tale of AIDs in the Age of Reagan, will be directed by Michael Greif (GRYF), who also directed “Rent” and “Next to Normal.”

The Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning “Angels” was first seen on Broadway in 1993 and later was made into an HBO film starring Al Pacino and Meryl Streep.

    • Funny that the AP thinks its mainstream readers can’t pronounce such common names…and GRYF could be pronounced two ways. I believe the better way to phoeneticize that would be GREEF or GRIF depending on correct pronounciation.

No comment on story, I just found all that instruction a little annoying. How else would you pronounce houghton????

    • I used to be a journalist in the AF, and as such had access to the AP wire on a daily basis. It is standard practice on all AP stories (when there could be multiple proununciations to include a phoenetic spelling for broadcast jouranlists.
The editors on this site should have caught that and deleted it.
