Report: Homosexuality no factor in abusive priests

(Baltimore) A preliminary report commissioned by the nation’s Roman Catholic bishops on the roots of the clergy sex abuse scandal found no evidence that gay priests are more likely than heterosexual clergy to molest children, the lead authors of the study said Tuesday.
The full report by researchers at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice won’t be completed until the end of next year. But the authors said that their evidence to date found no data indicating that homosexuality was a predictor of abuse.“What we are suggesting is that the idea of sexual identity be separated from the problem of sexual abuse,” said Margaret Smith of John Jay College, in a speech to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “At this point, we do not find a connection between homosexual identity and the increased likelihood of subsequent abuse from the data that we have right now.”
The question has been raised repeatedly within and outside the church because the overwhelming majority of known victims were boys. As part of the church’s response to the crisis, the Vatican ordered a review of all U.S. seminaries that, among other issues, looked for any “evidence of homosexuality” in the schools.
Yet, many experts on sex offenders reject any link between sexual orientation and committing abuse. Karen Terry, a John Jay researcher, said it was important to distinguish between sexual identity and behavior, and to look at who the offender had access to when seeking victims.
The bishops had commissioned the $2 million study as part of widespread reforms they enacted at the height of the abuse crisis. The scandal erupted in 2002 with the case of one predator priest in the Archdiocese of Boston, then spread to every U.S. diocese and beyond.
Nearly 14,000 molestation claims have been filed against Catholic clergy since 1950, according to tallies the bishops have released in recent years. Abuse-related costs have reached at least $2.3 billion in the same period.
At the meeting Tuesday, Bishop Edward Braxton, of the Diocese of Belleville, Ill., asked the researchers whether their study indicated that homosexuality should be considered when evaluating a candidate for the priesthood. In 2005, the Vatican issued a policy statement that men with “deep-seated” attraction to other men should be barred from the priesthood.
Smith said: “If that exclusion were based on the fact that that person would be more probable than any other candidate to abuse, we do not find that at this time.”
The latest findings affirmed previous reports that the rate of clergy abuse has declined steeply since the mid 1980s. Researchers found that the abuse rate peaked in the 1960s and 1970s. Most of the claims being made now involve allegations from decades ago.
In separate business Tuesday, the bishops:
- Adopted a pastoral letter affirming the church’s definition of marriage being between one man and one woman, and that sex is meant for procreation. They also issued an educational document on the church’s opposition to reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization.
- Updated their “Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services.” The new language states that medically assisted nutrition and hydration, while not mandatory in every case, should be provided to all patients who would benefit, including those in a persistent vegetative state. However, the aid should not be provided if it becomes “excessively burdensome” for a patient who is very close to death, the revision states.
- Gave final approval to an English translation of the Roman Missal that has been in development for years. After the Vatican gives its final authorization, the new translation will be adopted by parishes nationwide, possibly next year.

How perfectly gratifying that when the church tries to blame gay priests for molesting all of those little boys, actual professionals come out with real scientific data proving that homosexuality and child abuse are not connected/related and that these “men of God” were just abusing their power when molesting children..oh well, as long as they’re not gay…right? GIMME A BREAK!
Lets see how fast they bury this info. They can’t let the fact that they were/are wrong get out because they have been equating us with child molestation for centuries. Mr. pope, once again you are wrong!
Perhaps they should do a study about being a conservative religious leader as a predictor for child abuse.
So now, if the roman cult declares that sex is for procreation, then that must exclude from marriage all straight couples who won’t or can’t procreate.
Lets find a way to make this study into a public commercial, so all these dumb parents worried we’ll “convert” there children shut up. I’m sick of my love life getting compared to pedophalia, I like men, not boys.
Shout it from the rooftops, get in their faces about it, let everyone know. This is an old argument I think we’ve all heard before. Another precious scapegoat ripped away from the fake christians is always good. Now I have to wonder who thee
Not really surprising though. We’ve been right about nearly everything when others try to say what we are like…kinda like going to a tribe of cannibals and telling them their culture is despicable. I’m no cannibal, but I know such acts would land the priests in a cooking pot and they know it too. They’re just doing exactly what they can get away with without sticking their neck out. Cowards.
It’s well known that there is no link – expert observers have been saying so for years. What makes this important is that it was commissioned by the bishops themselves. It is not a new study but the second phase of a longer term project. After the first report some years ago, the results were widely misrepresented, by some bishops and right wing observers, as proving that there was such a link – even though this conclusion was not stated in the report, nor supported by the evidence.
This time around, the authors are clear in rejecting the claim, and it will be more difficult to misrepresent the findings. However, it is too much to expect the bishops to acknowledge their mistake in incorrectly placing the blame earlier, and to admit the real causes. These are widely recognised to lie deeply embedded in the institutional church itself: excessive concentration and abuse of church power, inappropriate methods of selection and training of candidate priests, and the insistence of clerical celibacy.
Until these real causes are addressed, the problem is not going to go away. It is highly unlikely that left to themselves, the bishops will give this report the attention it deserves. There is also the danger that without proper dissemination, the results could even be misrepresented once again.
We must not leave it to them. This must be read discussed and shared.

The cause of the abuse is multifold. First of all, the starving of sex – a natural desire since priests cant marry. Priests could marry till about 1000AD, but with marriage ended for them, their property was inherited by the church, to which they are married in the queerest marriage of all.
Second – why was it mostly boys victimized – beccause the church didn’t have a lot of or any alter boys for so very long.
third – the situation looks almost exactly like what happens in prisons. Sex starved people establishing their power over others by rape and humiliation.
fourth – why was this all hidden and allowed to continue for decades – because the rot obviously reaches all the way to the top.
And how was gay marriage killed in maine – by videos terrorizing people that their kids might learn about gays in schools,a nd find out that some of their teachers were gay.
So it turns out that the “Church of the Abusers” who abuse kids killed gay marriage by claiming that gays were abusers.
This church is sick to its rotten core, including a pope who learned his lessons in nazi germany.
If any of you continue to belong to it, shame shame shame on you. We str8 and gay alike, who believe in Jesus message of God’s love for all, should all be picketing this sick institution until it is bankrupt and its buildings face the wrecking ball.
I think what I find most disturbing about this article is that 2 MILLION dollars was wasted on this research! If it weren’t for the hatred of the LGBT community out there, we could have used this 2 MILLION dollars to help find a cure for HIV, Breast Cancer, help the homeless, feed hungry children… etc.
can’t wait to see how the bishops spin this; it concurs with all previous research done by other “non-partisan” researchers; the Vatican could very well go ballistic when they see it too; how will it effect their ongoing witch, er, warlock-hunts?
95% of the Catholic priest child molestations were homosexual and done by homosexuals.
Since gays are only 1-3% of the general population, are you suggesting that 95% of the Catholic priests were homosexuals or that they majority of the priests were heterosexuals who did not abuse children.
It’s nice they did a study to confirm what we all already knew.
But the fact that we even needed the study in the first place is an insult.
And secondly, the fundies won’t believe it anyway.
But at least the study is out there for open minded hetero’s to read.
I don’t know how many times I’ve had to say, I like em older (Brett Favre anyone)than younger.
Gay people do NOT molest kids, dumbasses.
Hey, gays just want to be loved. It is a common desire shared by all.
Facebook, you said that gay people do not molest children.
The study did not say that. It said that although 95% of these homosexual pedophile child molestations existed within the Catholic church, these homosexual men were not compelled by their homosexuality but their role as priests.
You see, only 5% of the cases were heterosexual priests compelled by their role as priests.
Are they saying that heterosexual priest have more self control and a better ability to fight off abuse of power derived from the priesthood?
We better st
If sex is really for the purpose of procreation, then menopausal women shouldn’t be allowed to have sex because they can’t conceive. Let’s see how well parishoners stomach that logic…
